About The Owner

I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI. I am married and have three daughters. We now reside in Chicago, IL but love the west Michigan lake shore. My wife, Mary, and I have our own little business in Chicago Southern Suburbs.

The Owner purchased this house in 2004

Why The Owner chose West Central

Growing up we always spent summers along the coast of Lake Michigan between Holland and Grand Haven. The beaches are beautiful and the people are friendly. We are conveniently located to all amenities and love the west Michigan Sunsets and beaches....None Better. We are so blessed to have a home in Grand Haven and want to share it with others.

What makes this house unique

Our house is reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell community. It is on a quiet cul-de-sac street and in close proximity to water, shops and restaurants.

Great home for multi-generational holiday time

  • 4 of 5

This home was as described and provided a wonderful opportunity for an extended family holiday for multi-generational family members with a wide range of ages from multiple states. Doug was always receptive to phone calls when issues arose or questions needed answering. He even was able to provide a Christmas tree stand for our use. The multiple bedrooms, living area and downstairs family rooms as well as the spacious kitchen provided many delightful times together. The location near a number of sledding areas provided great opportunities for the children to have a blast burning off energy and enjoying each other. The only concern we had was that there could have been more attention paid to cleanliness and maintenance. One obviously broken item was pointed out to us but others were discovered only when they were used. In fairness to Doug, these were not obvious and perhaps had happened with other renters and Doug may not have been aware they were broken.

Enjoyed our stay

  • 4 of 5

it's a big house with just about everything you can ask for for a vacation home. the only unfortunate thing is that there are a lot of ants in the front lawn and backyard furniture. We have 4 kids under age of 6 were not able to play in the front lawn, which is a real bummer.

We were told to bring the garbage out on Tuesday and we did but I think the trash cans had not been brought out for the last month or so. there were two trash cans both full and lots of ants around them. Maybe the owner need to ask some responsible neighbor to take care of the task.

Although he said there is a nearby public beach, it is so small not worth going. We went to the state park and it is really awesome. The nearby pool is not accessible for us to use because the rule has changed over the winter. The owner should be able to purchase the seasonal pass for the clients. that would be really nice.

we had a great stay. Enjoyed Grand Haven.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your feedback. We really appreciate it. It helps us make our guests stay more enjoyable. Didn't know that the trash was not taken out. We will check that when we check guests in and out. As for the beach, Lake Michigan water levels have been historically low in the last 10 years with super big beaches....however, last two years, all the snow and rain has increased the water levels and it is very hard to know how the various public beaches are effected. The beach size also has a lot to do with sandbar development too. Glad you were able to find the State Park. Even that beach is smaller than usual but great fun for kite flying, boat watching, kite boarding and walking on the pier. The ants outside are not a problem and this is the first that we are hearing about them. Most of West Michigan is a big sand dune and I'll talk to a gardener to see what they suggest. Thanks for your feed back and see you next year! We are always looking for ways to improve our guests stay. Sincerely, Doug

Nice House - Could use some updating and TLC!

  • 4 of 5

Pros: House is on a dead end street, which was nice for our 2 year olds. Beds were comfy and house was roomy for our group of 9. Did not use the basement area. Living room carpeting and kitchen flooring are new. Pots, pans and dishes were adequate. Doug did a walk through when we got there, so that was somewhat helpful. Nice side porch with a swing, which was fun. Front yard worked for playing ball and such. Lots to do there, went to Michigan's Adventure, putt putt, bounce house, golfing and the lighted fountain. Also went to the city beach in Grand Haven and Conference Center beach, both were nice. We did not go to the beach located two blocks from the house. One of our little kids left a doll at the house..Doug was kind enough to mail it to us!

Cons: Back yard not usable, mostly dirt and uneven. House could use some TLC and updating....nail holes and nicked walls, the ice maker wasn't working -advised Doug of this when we left. Did see some ants, forgot to mention that to Doug. Outdoor fencing, shrubs etc. could use some attention also. The oven really needed cleaning. The website advertised the Conference Center pool was available to use by just purchasing a wrist band - that was not the case. We were told we had to buy a pass for $25 and then purchase daily bands. Kind of disappointing for our little kids, who were all set to go in the pool.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the feedback. We are always looking for ways to improve our guests stay. This year we focused our work on projects like new carpeting in the great room and getting rid of and trimming some outside shrubbs and cleaning up the yard. We took out twenty trees a few years ago and are going to level the back yard and plant grassfall 2016 or spring 2017. Unfortunately, weather didn't cooperate this year. Our handy man has projects that he was working on before the season but didn't get to all of them. He took care of the major ones and this fall we will focus on the minor stuff such as the patching the small nail holes you mention and other cosmetic issues. As for the ice maker, it does work, and you informed me upon your departure not during your stay, that it doesn't dispense properly. Ice got caught in the chute, thawed and froze blocking the chute. It was addressed and we are waiting for a part to repair the chute flap. Sounds like you had a great time with family. There is so much to do in West Michigan it is awesome. Next time you come, bring jet ski's so you can launch them at the nearby Pigeon Lake and really enjoy Lake MI.

Beautiful and fun home and yard!

  • 5 of 5

Tlwr: this is an awesome house which we will definitely stay in again.

We stayed at doug's house over 4th of July weekend for four nights. I was later getting there than the rest of my party so I didn't meet him but my family said he was super friendly and a very pleasant host. He was also great to deal with throughout the booking process and before we got there.

The house itself was amazing. It slept eleven and our two dogs comfortably, oh it's pet friendly! The kitchen was awesome with all the facilities you'd expect, appliances, dishwasher, large refrigerator, breakfast bar etc. There are three full bathrooms, a master and one each upstairs and downstairs and a full laundry room.

There is a two car garage with lots of room, and a few lawn games to use in the back yard. The back yard was large and our dogs loved it. It has a grill and fire pit and a great porch with swinging loveseat.

The whole house is spacious and filled with light. They have a basketball hoop in the front drive which gave us endless hours of fun, bring a ball!

It is close to grand haven and a Walmart and Meijer for your vacation shopping. There are also nature walks and beaches close by.

Overall we loved our stay and will definitely be looking to book this house again for future vacations in the area!
