The Jewish Ghetto in Rome is a very safe neighborhood, as there is private surveillance service that makes even small crimes like pickpocketing very unlikely. People are friendly and it's more like living in a small village within a big city.
Public transportation is in walking distance (Largo Argentina is a 3 min walk from the house where buses and the tram leave bringing you in many different areas), or Piazza Venezia (15 minutes) is close by and offers another bunch of connections.
