About Judy July and Norm Mayell
Our family has had many memorable seasons at the cabin: skiing and sledding with our kids and their classmates, reading stories on dark winter nights in front of the wood stove, biking and hiking lots of trails on the north shore, watching Fourth of July fireworks at Lake Tahoe or Donner Lake, kayaking on Donner Lake, star gazing, outdoor concerts and theater productions, playing golf in the mountains where your ball travels farther, visiting nearby mining town Virginia City, or driving north to Graeagle on Highway 89. It's a sweet life. Mostly we have fun.
Judy July and Norm Mayell purchased this Cabin in 1996
Why Judy July and Norm Mayell chose Truckee
Living in the dense urban Bay Area, we longed to have a place where our children (and now grandchildren) could play outdoors in all seasons, make forts and snow caves, watch wildlife, breathe pine-scented mountain air and observe the starry sky away from city glare. We chose this property because it is adjacent to a green-belt common area, which gives added privacy and space. It is a level lot – a plus when driving on snowy roads. This is a perfect get-away cabin with easy access to many amenities within Tahoe Donner as well those within driving distance, for example, Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake, Squaw Valley, Northstar, Sugar Bowl, Emerald Bay, Shakespeare at Sand Harbor, historic downtown Truckee, Reno, Graeagle, Sierraville hot springs, rivers, lakes, mountains, forests, skiing, hiking, biking, wildlife, and endless discovery!
What makes this Cabin unique
Among many things, our lot is adjacent to a double green belt, which means there is a small pine forest next to our cabin on one side and an additional stand of trees behind our cabin ending near a dry-creek bed. Directly across the street is a nature trailhead leading in one direction to Trout Creek Recreation Center (10 minute forest walk to the fitness center, spa, pools, playground, classes) and in the other direction along Trout Creek through meadows, beaver ponds, forest trails to Northwoods Country Club (tennis, pool, playground, activities, pizza pub). In winter, downhill and cross-country skiing is minutes away. In summer, we hike, swim and play golf. Tahoe Donner has an 18-hole, 7,002-yard par-72 championship golf course located on 200-acres of pristine Sierra landscape with towering pines featuring sustainable landscape practices and recognized as the “Best Greens in the Tahoe Region.” Excellent driving range, too.

Cute, Charming Cabin
We stayed at this cabin for a week of skiing. Our host Judy was lovely and very responsive to all my questions! The Cabin was clean and comfortable and there was plenty of space for our family of four. The loft space is awesome! Location was convenient for getting to the ski slopes, grocery store, and freeway! Only con for this visit was I missed having a dishwasher and laundry. We stayed a week and I didn’t come prepared with enough clothes for the week. I assumed I’d do laundry at the cabin. my mistake not confirming there was a laundry on site! :( Good news: Judy told me work was going to be done to install a laundry machine in April. I will visit again, esp with laundry on site! Thank you for sharing your home!
Thanks for being a great guest. You are right, a Bosch washer and dryer stack is being installed now. We hope you will visit again and find it more convenient with a laundry facility in-house.
Beautiful cozy cabin.
My family and I really enjoyed Judy and Norm’s beautiful cabin. The size was just perfect for the 4 of us. The house was very clean upon arrival. Amazing amount of snow in the backyard for the kids to play in. Judy and Norm were quick at answering when an issued arised. Even their neighbor was helpful in giving us information about the in town ice skating, which saved us money. I would definitely rent their cabin again next year for our yearly snow trip.
Thank you, Audra. You were a conscientious guest, easy to communicate with and responsive. We hope you will choose to stay at our cabin again.
Perfect cozy cabin
This was exactly what my teen son and I were looking for. Cozy, warm and perfect for cooking, baking and playing board games with a nice fire going. It’s well situated near the grocery and hiking trails and Donner Lake. We didn’t want to leave! We do intend to go back with the whole family to hike or ski. Or maybe just to stay in, read a good book or watch movies :). The owner was responsive, helpful and pleasant to deal with.
Thank you for choosing to stay at our cabin--you are welcome to come back any time.
Great family get away!
The cabin was a perfect ‘home base’ to relax in between our adventures (Legacy bike path, Donner Lake, Commons Beach on Lake Tahoe, and Squaw.) No AC was my only concern, but the cabin stayed cool enough for mid day naps, and had a nice breeze in the evening. The fully equipped kitchen and nearby grocery store was very convenient.
great location for restaurants and outdoor adventures
The cabin was great. The location was great for visiting downtown Truckee and hitting Donner Lake for a quick swim. The nights were quiet and dark. The cabin had everything we needed to make our own food and plan our trips. Would def rent again in the future!
Great week in Tahoe Donner
Our family of 4 had a great week in the cozy cabin. The cabin is nicely updated, and the location is great. We made full use of the Tahoe Donner guest passes. The cabin was nicely stocked with kids books, puzzles, and games, which kept my young children entertained all week.

It is a High Sierra scenic 16 miles from Lake Tahoe via CA-89S and 36 miles from Reno on I-80. If you’re coming from an area outside of Northern California, Tahoe Donner is accessible by any of four major airports, train and bus routes.
