About George and Carole Ford

Greetings! We are the Ford Family. We discovered and purchased this property in 1996. As our young family grew, we camped, hiked, and fell in love with this rural, mountainous terrain, with abundant wildlife, and amazing wildflowers. We were weekenders with a dream to become full time residents and to share this lost province with others. In 2007 our family crafted 3 private cottages in carefully selected sites within this property. George was a builder north of Charlotte before relocating to the Lansing area. Carole loves to garden and manages the cottages and new venue on the property. We are slowing bringing it back into an Appalachian farm as it was over 100 years ago. We raise sheep, grow sunflowers and work on an endless supply of projects while maintaining the integrity of our natural surroundings. Most of the materials used in the construction of the cottages were harvested from the property. We welcome new guests and enjoy friends returning each year.

Why George and Carole Ford chose Blue Ridge Mountains

This area of the Blueridge is truly a well kept secret. A lost province. This is so much more than just renting a cabin. We are a true rural retreat. With marked hiking trails, farm animals, a stocked trout pond with a newly constructed log and stone building with a 6 foot fireplace, restrooms, lawn games, and a wonderful rocking stone patio.

What makes this cottage unique

This 215 acre property is at an altitude at almost 4000 ft. Cool breezes in the summer, a light show of fireflies, and an amazing starry night skies are part of your experience. Autumn brings warm colors and a chill to the air as you sink in a bubbly hot tub after a scenic hike to the ridge. Winter wraps us in white with a quiet splendor. Spring welcomes us with trickling waters, new wooly lambs, and the symphony of frogs as the mountain come to life. Then it starts again and again.

Quiet, mountain solitude. A place to renew your soul.

Our family loved On the Windfall! George and Carole are wonderful hosts. Granny Mandy is a beautiful, warm home. The pascova was great for relaxing and gathering as a family. We enjoyed hiking up the mountain, using the swing and relaxing in the chairs and hammocks.

Wonderful weekend in the country

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful cottage. The property was as presented or better. The views were fantastic and we enjoyed feeding the animals on the farm. The home was well stocked with everything you'd need to cook for a group of 6 (there is not a grocery very close so be sure to bring what you need). We enjoyed sitting by the outside fireplace on the stone patio in the evenings, and catching breathtaking sunrises in the morning. While I was hoping to catch some trout from the lake, this didn't turn out the be the case. It is a bit of work to get to the property, but well worth it. We also made day trips to Damascus and Grayson Highlands to bike the Creeper trail and hike.

Beautiful get away in the woods. Charming, has everything you need for a relaxing vacation away from it all.

Hot tub, wonderful outdoor fireplace, fully equipped kitchen, rain showers, homey decor, and all the comforts of home and more. Lot's to do in the surrounding area, or do nothing! Great place to go with family or friends!!

Fantastic Winter Weekend

  • 5 of 5

After our first weekend vacation four years ago, we have made this our goto vacation spot twice a year. It provides the perfect respite to our hectic city life. We love the solitude in nature aspect - super luxury cottages with awesome views provide us with a chance to fully relax - we read books, grill steaks and hang out in the hottub. And close to fantastic outdoor activities - hiking in Grayson Highlands, kayaking or rafting in the new River and cycling the Virginia Creeper Trail. And if you want to meet and talk with other guests and the really cool owners - they have constructed a fantastic Pavillion with large outdoor fireplace overlooking a beautiful pond. It's a large outdoor living room. It's a 5 star experience everytime. We go back to the city refreshed and ready to go.
