About the property

1879 Minimg Camp -The Bonanza- on a mountain top in middle of National forest

First time ever offered to the public! We would like to share with you this breathtaking view and quaint cozy cabin. The Bonanza has views of Harney Peak, The Needles, back side of Mt. Rushmore, Mt Coolidge and Custer State Park. You are in total isolation and only two miles from Custer. Either in the home, on the deck or just on the property, you will not be able to take your eyes off this beautiful view. This truly is a place you will not want to leave. It is rustic, yet elegant! We envision this to be a place to go on your honeymoon, to write a book or a song or just relax. You can take day hikes in any direction and discover the same places Native Americans, General Custer and the settlers discovered.

The Recently remodeled cabin was been done so to keep the rustic feel of an 1880s mining camp and today's modern amenities for your comfort.

The cabin offers a Master bedroom with a queen bed, bathroom has a claw foot tub/shower.

Kitchen/living room has large windows for panoramic view of the Black Hills. The open floor plan of kitchen and living area include a ladder going up to an 18x 13 loft (also with amazing views) with 4 twin beds.

You step out of the living room onto a deck that has r views of the beautiful Black Hills.

The guest cabin has a queen size bed, small refrigerator, table and two chairs, (roll away cot is available upon request). It has a private porch with the same stunning view.

Carzy Horse Memorial is just 20 minutes away and they have a beautiful light show in the evening.

Mt. Rushmore is only 30 minutes away and is a must see! Nice shopping and good ice cream availabel there too!

Hill City is approximately 25 minutes away and has the 1880's Train which goes from there to Keystone. Hill City is known for their German Restaurant, The Alpine Inn, a great place to eat lunch and they have delicious home made desserts!

Keystone which is at the base of Mt.Rushmore, is an old historic minning town, lots of history. In their downtown they have nice shopping and you can watch taffy being made in the Taffy shop.

There is fishing, swimming and boating available at four area lakes: Sylvan, Bismark, Legion and Stockade, these are all within 1-25 miles from the cabin.

Custer State Park is just a few (12) miles down the road. This park is one of the largest State Parks in the United States. It has one of the largest free roaming buffalo herds in the U.S., Big Horm sheep, elk, deer, turkeys and the famous friendly burros can also be seen in the park.

There are two world class caves in the area which offer cave and spelunking tours. Wind Cave National Park is approximately 15 miles away and Jewel Cave National Monument is approximately 12 miles away.

There is a local golf course in Custer, just 5 minutes away! There is also a golf course in Hot Springs which is only a 30 minute drive through Wind Cave National Park (where the buffalo roam and the prairie doge play!)

Historic Deadwood is approximately one hour away and has a wide variety of casinos and entertainment available daily. Mt. Moriah is the resting place of the famous Clamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickock, also in Deadwood.

The home is approximately an hour drive to Sturgis.

This property is on a mile long gravel road with a steep incline, SUV's preferred, please call with any questions.

Due to the terrain steepness, we ask that a liability release be signed upon arrival.

Kitchen is fully stocked, we provide linens, towels and only start up paper products, not enough for your whole stay.

Stackable washer and dryer and laundry tub in laundry room.

Table and chiars on front deck and gas gril.

Check in time is 4:00 pm and check out time is 10:00 am.

Return Trip to Mountain Top and loved every minute!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely love Mountain Top cabin! My husband and I returned with our two kids (aged 9 & 11) after visiting this past fall. We actually booked our 2nd visit as we were driving home from our first. The view is breathtaking, and there's plenty of opportunity to hike in the national forrest surrounding the cabin. The cabins are comfortable and clean, and the view and porch of the smaller cabin is lovely as well! We met Dawn this time and she is a wonderful host. We cannot imagine staying anywhere else in the Black Hills area and we will most definitely return again!

Wonderful cabin with beautiful views!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was nice and lived up to our expectations. The owners checked in on us to make sure we arrived safely and offered to assist if we needed anything. The kitchen was well furnished and little things like soap, shampoo, hair dryer, trash bags, etc were provided. The cabin is remote and has a beautiful view. Location was right next to Custer State park and centrally located to all the major attractions. It was very clean and well kept. The drive up to the cabin was a 5 minute drive up a dirt/gravel road our SUV had no issues and handled it well. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to a friend.

Dawn & Tim Go The Extra Mile

  • 5 of 5

Dawn & Tim went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. The cabin was very clean and cozy. We loved the views once the snowstorm subsided. Tim was up bright and early plowing the road up to the cabin so we would be able to get down safely. My brother is diabetic and Tim offered to take us down and get groceries since we didn't get to the local grocery store before they closed the night we arrived. We will definitely look them up the next time we are in the area and stay at one of their vacation homes. We loved the cabin and their hospitality. Thanks for making a memorable stay for us!

Already planning a return visit!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our two kids (8 and 10) spent a long weekend at this beautiful cabin and absolutely did not want to leave! The views truly are gorgeous and staying there was a highlight of our trip. We all enjoy hiking and it was such a treat to explore the area around the property, and almost felt as though we could have spent all of our time there. The cabin itself is clean and well appointed. It's beautifully decorated and cozy, but spacious enough that we all had room to ourselves. Our kids loved sleeping in the loft! We didn't need to use the extra cabin on site for this trip - or the other cabin restroom - but we can envision coming back with another family and still have plenty of space.

Dawn was a joy to work with as well and communication was easy. As vrbo property owners ourselves, it was wonderful to get away and be so comfortable staying in someone else's cabin! The cabin provided everything we needed, and we were happy to use the grill to make some delicious meals. It was nice that oils, spices, coffee filters, cooking utensils, etc. were already there.

We kept ourselves busy in the Black Hills and surrounding area (The Badlands, Devil's Tower, Jewel Cave, Wind Cave, Crazy Horse and Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Ken's Rock Shop, hiking and hiking some more). There is so much to do here! And watching the stars while staying warm at the fire pit was a perfect ending to the day. We highly recommend staying at Mountain Top cabin on your visit to the Black Hills! We can't wait to go back!
