Dooneen, Clifden, Co Galway
We are just back from a very pleasant holiday in Clifden. We rented Dooneen which was a home away from home. The location could not have been better, a 5 minute walk from the gorgeous town of Clifden. The house itself is beautiful and had every amenity you could want, a fully equipped kitchen, spacious living areas and bedrooms. I would highly recommend this house to anyone who is travelling to the area.
Dear Mary, Thank you for this lovely review, we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Dooneen. We look forward to welcoming you back to Clifden in the future. Take care

Beautiful, roomy house in great setting
The house was beautiful, and perfect for four adult couples, a setup that is not easy to find.
We had 3 architects on the trip and they all loved the design of the house! There were nice views of the town from the kitchen area. I liked that it had several gathering areas (the living room), a smaller sitting area near the kitchen, and an outdoor area with a large round wooden table. This made it easy to spread out; those who wanted to sit alone and read without being in their bedrooms could do so.
The house is "green," and uses recycled rainwater and an air exchange for its systems, among other innovations. The tapwater looks a bit brown from the tannins in the water (probably from peat), but was fine to use. There is a fireplace in the living room, but we were a little intimidated by how high-tech it was and didn't use it. It was June and mild, so no problem - but if you're renting during a cold snap, be sure to ask for a detailed demo. The owners are really nice and are willing to come by anytime to show you how to use things or answer questions.
The appliances are all new and very nice, especially the large French door LG refrigerator and the gas range, and we were delighted to have a clothes washing machine available, since we were doing some heavy duty hiking. Every bedroom had its own full bath, plus there was an additional bath with shower off the kitchen in the laundry room. The house is heated by radiant heat in the floors, which made it comfy. However, on warm days, the upstairs bedrooms got a bit too warm. The WiFi worked well, even with all of us using it.
The location is excellent; there is a beautiful walk on a country lane if you turn left from the driveway; you can bear right and have views of an inlet, or go straight and have views of the 12 Bens (mountains) across fields. It's an easy drive to the Connemara National Park (hiking Ben Diamond was one of the highlights of the trip), or a bit longer trip to drive through the fjord-like area leading to Westport. The best part of the location was that you could walk into the charming town of Clifden in about 7 minutes. It has many nice shops and restaurants (plus the homeowners' bakery!). There are many music pubs and restaurants in town featuring excellent Irish music. If you are a music lover, Clifden is the place for you. We loved Lowry's 10:00 p.m. sessions, although they were as crowded as a rush-hour subway car (well worth it). We also tried some of the early sessions elsewhere, which were offered for those having dinner.
Things to be aware of if you're coming here:
(1) Be sure to bring a cell phone that works in Ireland. There is NO HOUSE PHONE available. That was a big drawback for us since it made it difficult to call for reservations, etc. Also, we got a flat tire on the way there, and a working cell phone would have been very useful!
(2) The roads are very narrow going from Galway west to Clifden. There are no shoulders at all on most of them, and there are often hazards like rock walls that have fallen onto the edge of the road or pavement dropping away. If you are used to driving on the right, do not hug the edge of the road or you will probably damage your car. Hug the center line, and scoot over a few inches if you meet somebody coming the other way.
(3) The supermarket on Market Street in Clifden (Kavanaugh's SuperValu) is well stocked and had specialty items for our gluten free and dairy free friends. Be sure to pick up some bath soap and toilet paper there as you do your initial marketing, as you may not find these items (or not much) at the house.
(4) If you don't find a frying pan in the kitchen, it's there! The drawers with pots and pans have shelves above the drawers with more items.
