Charming old home in need of cleaning...

  • 2 of 5

This home is very charming and in a convenient location. However, we were very disappointed in the cleanliness inside and out. The lawn was not kept up and the front porch was very dirty, therefore tracking in the dirt each time we entered the home.. The inside looked like it had not been cleaned before we arrived. All the floors were dirty, the kitchen counter was not clean, the fan in one of the bedrooms was covered in dust and dirt and the shower had mold around the bottom. We stay at many rentals all over so we feel like we have a good point of reference. We feel if you have a rental on VRBO/Homeaway or any other rental site you have a responsibility to the renter to have it throughly cleaned. This was not the case before we arrived. Finally, when we got there we learned the television was not working. It was very old and needs replacing. Even though a working television is not our highest priority we were disappointed because there were several sporting events we had planned to watch in the evening. The home needs really needs a thorough cleaning. If this happens then it will certainly be worth renting.

Comfortable cottage

  • 4 of 5

This is our favorite place to stay when visiting Sewanee. Easy, comfortable house and owners continue to make upgrades. Great to have laundry facilities and a grill. We will definitely book again.

Quaint House in Very Convenient Location

  • 4 of 5

The Boxwood Cottage is in a VERY convenient location to the main road in Monteagle that leads into Sewanee. It was a max of 10 minutes from everything. It was walking distance from all that Monteagle has to offer - including Mountain Goat Market which is a must. We loved being able to bring our dogs and loved that everywhere we went was dog friendly so we had them with us at all times. As previous reviews mention, the house is definitely a bit stale and doesn't seem like it's used or aired out much. There were cob webs, spiders, ants, and some other small bugs (dead and alive) around the house. There was also used towels in the bathroom (including washcloth hanging in the shower) and trash in the bathroom trash can as if no check was done of the place before next renters arrived. There were socks under the bed and it was quite dusty - something a quick swiffer could fix. In the photos, the side porch appears to have table and furniture for lounging/eating and it does not have any usable/quality furniture currently. We were bummed by that upon arrival but it turned out to be fairly cold the majority of our stay. Just to be noted if it is important to you. The owner is very responsive. If you need a home base for hiking/exploring the area then I would say this house works well for that! We did enjoy our stay and checking out all Monteagle and Sewanee have to offer!

clean freak

  • 3 of 5

I am a rental property owner and kind of a clean freak, so keep that in mind when reading my review. This was also my first VRBO experience, so maybe I was expecting too much? The good: The location of the house is excellent (close to interstate and convenient to hiking, Sewanee, etc. and the owners seem friendly and responsive. The not as great is that the house (at least when we visited) had probably been unused for a while and seemed a little "stale" so we kept some windows open and I resisted the urge to dust and remove cobwebs, but it was hard. Also, (and maybe this is something I should have asked before arriving) there was only a fraction of a toilet paper roll provided and only used soap, so I would recommend bringing your own. Maybe I should stick to hotels? As a side note, when we visited, the doughnut shop was only open 2 days a week, so plan to go a little farther for coffee and breakfast if you want to eat out (there was a coffee maker in the house).

Great visit

Thank you. We enjoyed our stay up on the mountain. We were close to our event and enjoyed the nearby coffee/donut restaurant We also liked Dave's.

Our hikes were full of spring beauty and color. Thanks
