The absentee owner is problematic.

  • 1 of 5

I stayed here with my family of five. The house is cute and well located. The owner lives out of state. There is no property manager.

By far the most significant complaint I have is that there was no A/C in the house for the first three days of our stay. It was very hot, reaching 89 degrees in the house, and this was particularly distressing for my very young children. This was a family trip and as a result of the heat, I was unable to visit with my 82 year old grandmother or watch my 4 month old niece in the house.

1. I never received a welcome letter explaining the property and its quirks or benefits. Even after we arrived and I called the owner to alert her to my many questions, no dice.

2. The sundries were seriously lacking. We arrived in the late afternoon after traveling with three small children since 4am, only to discover there was no soap in the entire house. I searched every cabinet and was only able to find one half used bar of soap. No iron. No mixing bowls, only three bowls for eating in, two mugs, etc. Far from a comfortable situations with a family.

3. There were dead cockroaches on the floor in several rooms. My husband commented that perhaps that was better than live cockroaches, but his joke was little comfort as I wrestled the dead bugs out of 6 year old’s hands – still before I’d had a chance to go out to the grocery store to buy soap.

4. The retracting gate for the parking area is very quirky. It was a challenge to get it to close properly without springing back open after a 5 second pause.

5. The dishwasher functioned, but only after I figured out how to cajole it. Wasn’t sure the dishes were really clean.

6. The televisions was totally erratic. I reached out to the owner about this a couple times, and even suggested a solution, but then gave up. As of when I left, it was still a gamble whether it would turn on error-free at any given time.

I reached out to the owner a few times the first few days of our stay about these issues. After a strange conversation on the night of 5/24 I realized she was not prepared to solve any problems, and was highly emotional. She was crying on the phone, telling me that someone in her life was trying to cheat her out of $100k. YIKES.

Now she's accusing me of intentionally breaking everything in the house. Why would I do that to my own family and ESPECIALLY with a five figure security deposit? And if I *did* damage the house, why did she refund that deposit?
