About Mike and Lorie Retford

Mike and Lorie are an active adventurous couple who love the Island Park area. Mike is a retired veterinarian and avid outdoors man and Lorie is a creative artistic angel who puts up with him. They enjoy all of the outdoor activities this incredible location offers and are happy to share their experience with their guests. Because we live only two miles away from this cabin, we can readily respond to any need you may have very quickly. Nevertheless we respect our guests privacy and will not bother you unless requested.

Mike is also a stand-up comic and impressionist and is always eager to entertain, often making appearances at local dining establishments and other venues. We are committed to make your visit the most pleasant experience possible by making ourselves available to assist you in anything you may need whenever possible. Mike is fluent in Spanish and there are many people in the area who speak a wide variety of languages. If you give us enough advanced notice, we can arrange for a guide/interpreter for you at a reasonable cost.

Come and see why we fell in love with this place. You'll love it too.

Why Mike and Lorie Retford chose Idaho

Few areas provide such opportunities to have moose, dear, and other wildlife walk through the yard on a regular basis. Even the occasional bear! Neighbors are rarely present making it a very peaceful getaway. Another unique benefit of renting from us is the 'concierge' service we can provide. We can arrange for snowmobiles/ATV's to be sitting in the driveway when you arrive, gassed up and ready for you to enjoy. We can also arrange tours into Yellowstone (summer or winter), white water rafting, kayaking, zip line tours, snow skiing at a variety of resorts including Big Sky and Grand Targhee, boat rentals, etc. This area is famous for the year round recreational activities available to visitors. If a quiet, peaceful rest is more to your liking, just relax by the gas fireplace or enjoy watching the majestic pines sway in the breeze against the clean blue sky. Either way, we're sure you'll find what you're looking for in this property.

What makes this cabin unique

Although the cabin has comforts such as high end appliances, a new gas fireplace, and beautiful granite counter tops, the early 1900's vintage stove that came with the cabin really set the mood for everything else we did with the place. To us, the stove is a precious showpiece of american history. The antique claw foot tub is so comfortable to soak in, you may never want to leave. The cozy, warm wood interior features many custom details. Lorie is a gifted woodworker and has made lamps, cabinets, wall hangings, and little touches that really give the place a unique charm. There is a moose cow who brings her calf by each spring to show them off. Several of her calves are now large themselves and still frequent the yard. There are so many fishing, boating, hiking, biking, skiing and sightseeing opportunities near by that we still haven't seen or done them all after years of living here full time. The community is full of kind friendly people who are eager to help visitors enjoy this area we are privileged to call home.

Wonderful cabin

  • 5 of 5

This was a beautiful cabin in the woods and was the perfect spot for our Yellowstone and Teton adventures. The little things like the movie collection put this place over the top. Would stay again or would recommend to anyone planning a family trip.

Peaceful, relaxing retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the cottage after spending a week horseback riding in Wyoming... so loved (!) the deep bathtub! Everything one needed was there, and excellent directions for groceries on the way in. Lovely personal touches from owners throughout the property made it feel a home from home. Would definitely stay again!

The Woodland Retreat is magical. A beautiful cabin, very well equipped, at an amazing location with incredible views. Mike and Lorie are the best hosts, attentive and responsive. They made our visit unforgettable. Only regret is we couldn't stay longer...

Loved it!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Mike and Lori's lovely cabin. The cabin is a gorgeous, rustic, artsy getaway in the woods. It is very cozy with tons of creative, rustic decor that has everything you need to make meals, do laundry, keep yoiung kids entertained, and have a terrific vacation. We forgot some of our hiking gear and Mike helped us out which was much appreciated. We roasted dogs and marshmallows at the fire pit many a night making the kids extremely happy. The drive to Yellowstone's west entrance is easy and beautiful and there are great things to do nearby as well e.g. Harriman State Park, Boondock's restaurant, etc. Thanks Mike and Lorie for letting us stay and for your tremendous hospitality.
