About Lisa and Fred Ordway

We are both from Huntsville, but have lived in many other places. We moved back to Huntsville in 1996 and bought the house next door to this one, which is the house Fred grew up in.

Lisa and Fred Ordway purchased this house in 1960

Why Lisa and Fred Ordway chose Huntsville

Wouldn't live anywhere else in Huntsville but Monte Sano. It's like always being on vacation. Monte Sano, Mountain of Health, has long been known for its healthy environment and was historically believed the furthermost southern area to escape malaria, yellow fever and cholera due in part to its cooling winds, el viento.

What makes this house unique

1 mile to Monte Sano State Park, 7 miles to Robert Trent Jones Golf Course, 5 miles to Space and Rocket Center, this property is centrally located but has the room and privacy of a cabin in the woods.

Cozy Monte Sano Bungalow Sleeps 8-10
average rating of 4.85 based on 20 reviews

This home is well-loved. We loved it too.

  • 5 of 5

When we arrived and walked through this well-loved house we immediately felt at home. We thought it was even better than its photos. It is so beautifully decorated and even after a week we don't think we saw every painting or picture on the walls. We felt like the owners were sharing a piece of history. We were there for a family reunion at Monte Sano State Park and this was perfect to stay right next to it. Some of our closest relatives stopped in occasionally throughout the seven days we stayed, and each one loved taking a tour through this unique house. There was plenty of space for the cars. I think at one time we had seven cars parked there. This place reminded us of old times when we stayed at our grandparent's historic home at the foot of the mountain where there were lots of little places to gather for conversation. We couldn't have done that if we had stayed in hotel rooms. The home is well-kept, clean, and had everything we needed including the linens and cookware. Our Dad is getting up there in years and walks with a cane but little things helped him get around like railings and one of the bathrooms was handicap equipped. The owner's two dogs adopted us and loved playing with the kids that came. Lisa was so nice we could have talked to her all day about the house but she gave us lots of space for family time. I know we paid to stay there but thank you so much for opening your home for people to enjoy.

Owner's Response: We really loved having you and your lovely family as our neighbors while you were in Huntsville, and are so happy you had such a good time! Bat and Bird are really missing the would not believe the hole Bird dug, I think because he was just sad and bored! I'm so happy that you felt at home, and that the house became your home away from home. It has that effect on people, and in a way...calls you back, as home does. I really hope that we will see all of you again, you are always most welcome! Lots of hugs until next time!

Good house close to monte sano park

  • 5 of 5

House was in a great location near the Monte Sano park where we wanted to be. It was very close to downtown Huntsville and good places to eat. The house was completely as advertised except there were 3 more fold out beds available and plenty of linens. The kitchen was well stocked. The beds were comfortable and the owner was very kind. The only thing I would say is bring your own pillows bc theirs are flat, but that is purely my own preference.

Mountain Memories

  • 5 of 5

What an ideal place for our family gathering. It gave us a great home base for reconnecting with our long-time Huntsville friends and for revisiting favorite old haunts and checking out what has changed in the years since we've been gone. It was also a perfect spot to host a large gathering of friends for what we called "Potluck on the Mountain"! Everyone found the house so appealing and full of Huntsville history. It will be a treasured memory to add to our trove. Many thanks to Lisa and Fred for their friendliness and helpfulness.

Lovely location, lovely home

  • 5 of 5

This large house was just what we needed as a home base for visiting family. There was plenty of space for all of us to sleep or keep to ourselves, but fantastic gathering spaces when we wanted to be together, play games, or have a meal. Our family and friends in Huntsville were glad to join us in the dining room or on the huge back porch, overlooking the woods. The kitchen is comfortable and easy enough to work in. The hosts were approachable but gave us plenty of space. We would love to come back here for another visit.
