Why not try something different from the drab and plain cabinas and stay in a place that provides all the amenities of home? Stay at VRBO's highest rated private home in Puerto Viejo.
Casa Z is your home away from home. This spacious house provides you with two nicely appointed bedrooms, each with a private bath. The master suite sleeps 2 adults and features a walk-in closet and dressing area, and a huge shower with hot water. The other bedroom has two twin beds and a standard double bed. The adjacent bathroom also has hot water in the shower. The kitchen is fully stocked with all the dishes, utensils, and cookware that you need to prepare anything from a simple breakfast to a gourmet dinner. You’ll also find a full sized range and oven, microwave, coffee maker, blender, slow cooker, and toaster. The living room is large and comfortable with two sofas. You'll spend a lot of time outside on the veranda watching the local wildlife, enjoying your favorite beverage, or just relaxing in the Adirondack chairs with a good book. Local telephone service is included, and wi-fi Internet access is provided at no additional charge.
Casa Z is located in Puerto Viejo, so you are only a hundred meters from the beach and two blocks from the great restaurants and nightlife of this quaint village. Just to the north is the popular town of Cahuita, including Cahuita National Park. And just to the south are the towns of Playa Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva, and Manzanillo where you will find Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge. Miles of unspoiled beach await you.
There is so much to see and do in Costa Rica’s “forgotten” Atlantic coast. Whether an organized half or full day guided tour or an adventure on your own, Puerto Viejo offers a wide variety of local area tours and attractions. Whether it is walking along the beach, hiking through the jungle, surfing, snorkeling, swimming, white-water rafting, tours of butterfly and botanical gardens, wildlife sanctuaries, or just taking in the sun on the secluded and pristine beaches, you will surely find something for you.

My very first trip to Costa Rica was on a cruise. The port of call was Limon, and I was so impressed, I thought if I ever retire, Costa Rica would be the place I'd want to call home. When I finally did retire, I moved to Costa Rica and fell in love with the Caribbean coast. I purchased land in Puerto Viejo and eventually built Casa del Zorro, which later became Casa Zorro, and now just Casa Z. I hope you love the area, and enjoy my home, which I happily share with you.
Tony Waddell purchased this house in 2000
The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is so rich in diversity with miles of unspoiled and uncrowded beaches. While certainly not remote and isolated, it is refreshing to visit a coastline that is unmarred with high-rise hotels and all-inclusive resorts. The area is stunningly beautiful, and the people are very friendly and helpful.
Staying in a private home is so much better than checking into a hotel that you may not be familiar with. And the house is so close to the beach as well as to the stores, restaurants, and shops. It is literally a 2 minute walk to the beach and a 5 minute walk to the center of town. The owner lives in Costa Rica and the property is professionally managed, providing you with the best service possible.
I urge all guests to leave a comment here. Be honest and constructive. Let others know what you liked. Let me know what you didn't. And as always, if you have any questions, be sure to let me know.
Thank you so much for visiting.

We stayed at Casa Z from Sept 30th to Oct 7th. There was 4 of us (2 18 year olds) Casa Z was perfect and fit our needs perfectly. Casa Z is super close to town and surroundings so walking or renting bikes are the best options. Casa Z is clean, spacious and very safe. The owner is great and always available by email and gets right back to you if he is contacted. Check in and out is a breeze it was so nice to arrive to Casa Z and have everything expected from prior communication. This was our first time in the country so we did not know what to expect, but everything was perfect. I would not hesitate to stay at Casa Z the next time I travel to PV and highly recommend Casa Z for your stay.
Thank you to Casa Z for making our stay absolutely perfect!
My friends and I had the most wonderful vacation at Casa Z! It was very spacious and comfortable for the four of us. The owner was very responsive with our reservation process and the management company went the extra mile when we accidentally locked ourselves out of the house AND the safe! The home has everything you could want and the location is primo!! I totally recommend Casa Z and will stay there on my next visit to Puerto Viejo!
Casa Zorro is a nice house in a nice location to most things that would enable one to avoid having to have a car although there are now rental locations in town. This @ times does also cause a bit more traffic. This is not our first stay there & to us it seems a bit like home. Tony, the owner does truly care about his guest & tries to make sure all is as advertised. The house is comfortable for short term stays as there is no washer/dryer yet should one wish one could probably find a reliable enough laundry service. The house is secure & we find that the neighbors are also a good group of people who do reside in Puerto Viejo year round. The house does come with a house cleaner that comes once a week & changes the bedding & cleans up the house. The house has most everything that one should need on a vacation to be comfortable as long as AC is not a requirement. Remember that this area is a rain forest & all the thrills of such are close by & easy with easy enough access to enjoy. The bus service is excellent as far as getting around outside of town in either direction & cabs are readily available once you make the connection. We will return as again to us this now feels like home away from home & is comfortable as per our needs & wants while in PV. Again, Tony is the host with a most accommodating attitude when it concerns his guest & does his best to remedy any problems before they ever become a problem. We enjoy Casa Zorro & hope to continue to do so when in PV.
My family of 5, me(mom), and my 4 children, ages 27, 17, 10 and 8 spent Christmas in Puerto Viejo at Casa Zorro. The location is amazing, we felt very safe the entire 8 days we were there. Everything we needed was in the house, and anything that we did need was easily accessible. There is an amazing bakery which is only a 3 minute walk away! There is a grocery store very close as well. I would not hesitate to return to Puerto Viejo and Casa Zorro!
Me and my family - my wife and two little kids (4.5 and 1.5) - planned a trip to the Caribbean capital of rain forest-laden beach life, reggae chills, surf, and yoga - the atmospheric, albeit kinda gritty, village of Puerto Viejo. We found Casa Zorro via vrbo.com, and based on the traveller reviews we decided to book the house for nine days. We are happy we did.
The owner was swift and accommodating in his communication in the booking process.
We had no real idea of what to expect from the house, but were pleased to see that it was situated in comfortable walking distance from the restaurants, shops and relatively lively traffic in the town center. It's good to take part in the bustle, but good to get away.
Compared to many other lodges and hotels, Casa Zorro is several steps up the ladder. Puerto Viejo's houses are often pretty run down, but this house is a wooden, well kept and spacious property. It has its flaws, there is definitely a list of fixing that needs to be done, but on the whole it is a comfy house. The large living room/kitchen area and the sizable porch turned out to be great for our kids' roaming needs, and the two bedrooms/bathrooms will fit families and bigger travel parties great.
As anyone with small, active children will testify, traveling and only eating out can be a nuisance when the kids go bananas in some restaurant. Having a fully equipped kitchen and being able to make some meals at home was not only a relief but also a lot more economical in this sometimes (especially in peak season) rather expensive country.
The house was well kept by the property manager, who also responded quickly and adequately when we called about a few issues.
There are a few things on the house that do need fixing - a bit of leakage in the porch ceiling, some wood studs that need to be replaced, some worn mosquito netting and some general wear and tear. But the house kept most critters out and works fine for a week or two. Actually, I'd stay even longer.
Other nice things include encounters of the third kind with humming birds, a couple of raccoons, countless butterflies and ants, and a few sloth sightings in the trees next to the house. The bakery around the corner provided us a source of fresh bread and lovely fruit juices in the morning.
Casa Zorro was a wonderful retreat, close to town (right on the edge of the southern part) where my daughter and I stayed for a week while exploring the area. It was roomy, had everything we needed, and was walking distance to everything in town. It had drinking water, which was a bonus so we did not have to buy while we were there. Any questions I had were answered right away. I appreciated the extra security (the outside locked gate, as well as the extra lock on the front door), plus the safe in the master bedroom where we were able to lock our passports and any electronics that we brought with us. I would recommend it to anyone!
