ONLY ONE WEEK REMAINING THIS SUMMER - 30 JUNE-7 JULY! Conveniently located just 40 minutes from Pisa airport, the Mulino is an authentic water mill dating from the 17th century, completely renovated in 2005/6 to become a luxurious holiday home with picturesque views of the hills of Lucca and its own babbling stream. Plumbing, electricity and central heating are all new, as is the large pool (12x6m). Five double bedrooms and three large bathrooms have been created and filled with antique furniture and beds with new quality mattresses. The ancient tree-trunk sized beams and terracotta tiles have been preserved and an ancient aquaduct that brought water to the mill until 1978 still stands in the 4,500m2 (1 acre) garden. The house is cool in summer thanks to the thick walls. The kitchen is spacious - we love to cook ourselves - and equipped to a high standard. The Mulino is 12 km from the walls of Lucca and 6 km from the A11 Lucca-Florence motorway, taking you to Florence in 50 minutes. Pisa is 40 minutes away. Siena about 1-1/2 hours.
How accessible is the property?: The property is on the first and second floors of an old mill. To access the property you have to climb a flight of stone steps. It is therefore not suitable for people in wheelchairs.
Is a car essential?: To get to the property initially you would need to take a taxi or have your own car, and once there it is handy to have a car to get around and see the sights. However, you can satisfy many of your local needs locally, walking 5 minutes to the shop, the bus to town and 10 minutes to the local restaurant and pizzeria. Also, we provide bicycles for you to get to the next pizzeria and the tennis courts.
Is it close to the beach? It takes about 45 minutes realistically to get to the popular Italian beaches of Marina di Pisa, Viareggio, Lido di Camaiore and Marina di Pietrasanta.

Why Michiel Bicker Caarten chose Pieve di Compito
We have always liked the Lucca area. We first visited for a wedding in 1992. The mill itself is ancient and authentic. The oldest part dates back to the 1690s, yet it has only ever had three sets of owners, including ourselves. It is in a beautiful rural setting, yet not too cut off from amenities and people. The immediate area is flat and suited to cycling and walking, while the mountains are close by and form a nice backdrop for the garden.

Great holiday in the Mulino
We had a really nice family holiday in the Mulino. During our stay we enjoyed both the nature and the culture (Lucca, Florence and Pisa are nearby). Also relaxing: reading books beside the swimming pool and the children were happy with internet/wifi. The house is cosy as well as luxurious. We had BBQ's in the garden, their is the possibility to invite an Italian cook and there are a lot of restaurants in the neighboorhood. We would love to go there again!
Peace in Pieve
We had a marvellous stay in Il Mulino, and will certainly return. The house has been wonderfully restored and furnished by Emma's hard work, and the attention to details makes a big difference. Samples of some of the wonderful local produce were awaiting us, and the local helper/caretaker is terrifically helpful if you have questions about anything from local restaurants to renting scooters for teenagers to finding the best beaches on the coast. Ideal house for a big family (or two more modest-sized ones), with plenty of relaxation space so that no one needs to feel crowded. The various terraces and lovely garden with babbling stream are a delight, and we never tired of the views. The surrounding hills and nearby villages are fascinating and great for walking and climbing (or rough running), and when the need for civilisation arises, Lucca is 15 mins away. Who can beat it?

Wonderful location Great stay
Set amidst the Pisan hills and surrounded by the tranquillity of the typical Tuscan countryside stands Mulino, a spacious house which was once a watermill and has been restructured with the greatest regard to detail by the owner himself. Thanks to its strategic position, the house is the ideal choice for beach, art and nature lovers. Just a few kilometres from the main historical-medieval towns of Tuscany like Volterra, Lucca, Pisa, Siena, Florence, from the renowned Costa degli Etruschi with its many and various beaches and from the numerous cellars for tasting famous wines such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia; We stayed in Mulino in June 2010 with couples and had an absolutely marvellous time.
Wonderful stay among friends
We had a wonderful mini-holiday with friends, The villa is located in a quiet and peaceful village, so we could rest and read at the pool, but good restaurants were not too far away, as well as Florence, Pisa and Lucca we visited. It felt Italian and the villa is very comfortable and spacious. It is a perfect address to spend a holiday with family and friends, it is luxourous as well as relaxed to stay there, feel italian drinking wines and eating olives. We will come back!
my way in Tuscany
Togehter with 9 other friends we enjoyed one famous week in the heart of the Tuscany. I really can recommend a stay in the old mill as excellent homebase for holidays there. Not only the close distance to the sea furthermore as a great point to start a sightseeing tour to exciting points. The combination of the house and the pool is perfect. We enjoyed the time... In short: choose it, for a rememberable holiday.
Great stay in lovely valley villa
We had a great time in this lovely villa with our family and a couple of friends. It has an extraordinary charming and stylish interior, spacious as well, and a great garden with terrific pool. Good for lazy poolside holidays but also a great base for getaways in Tuscany like beautiful Lucca closeby.
Thanks Mike A!. Glad you liked it.
Located 12 km south of Lucca, surrounded by olive groves, it's an ideal base from which to combine culture with comfortable accommodation amid calm, scenic surroundings. The village Pieve di Compito is in the 'Compitese' - an area famous for its produce, particularly its olive oil. The terrain is relatively flat and wooded, flanked by picturesque mountains and crossed by streams, making it ideal for walking and biking. Pieve, together with its sister village Sant'Andrea di Compito, is the 'village of camelias' - it hosts the annual camelia fair in springtime, attracting horticulturalists and amateur gardeners from as far afield as Japan. Five minutes' walk from the property is a village shop with good local produce and local wines. Bus service to Lucca at 100m. Supermarket at 3km. The local tennis courts are at 1.5km. The nearby villages are nice to visit.
