About Cean (Sean) Jensen

I am originally from New Hamsphire, USA and my wife Lorraine is from Washington State, USA. We met while both serving in the Air Force at 19 years old, in 1990. We have been together ever since. We left the service after 4 years and now work in semiconductor electrical engineering. Both growing up on lakes and near the ocean, we naturally have migrated from snorkeling to a love of diving. We now live in Fountain Hills, Arizona where the warmth, sunshine, hiking and panoramic views are amazing. Our home here will at some point also be on VRBO or up for house swap, as a means to see other countries and enjoy sharing the places we have come to call home and love.

Cean (Sean) Jensen purchased this house in 2008

Why Cean (Sean) Jensen chose Chemuyil

We went on a short cruise on an invite from friends. One of the stops was Playa Del Carmen, 30 minutes north of our home on 307. After a day on shore exploring we fell in love with the area and for the next 3 years we would return there and rent. As fortune would have it, we had a rare opportunity to buy a home, not a condo, in the center of all that one would want to see while in the could we resist? Thus started our journey into foreign property ownership.

What makes this house unique

With the move to Arizona, we already have escaped the wet, cold, miserable winters we endured for so long. As a result, we rarely need our property during the high season, and instead go there in the summer to escape the Arizona heat, leaving it free for others to enjoy during the peak season.

Fabulous vacation spot on the RivieraMaya

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful 3 weeks here in Chan Chemuyil! This cozy home has all the essentials and is in a safe and friendly neighborhood. It's close enough to the tiny town of Chemuyil that we walked up almost daily to pick up groceries or have dinner at La Palapa. I even got a great haircut in Chemuyil (someone recommended Leticia in the green house across from Leo's). The patio out back quickly became a favorite spot to read in the hammocks or just talk. Xcacel Beach is dreamy and an 8-10 walk down a path near the closest cenote (which is a cool and refreshing treat after walking back from the beach). Akumal is just a short Collectivo (van) ride up Rt.307 (costs about a buck). Try Turtle Bay Cafe (yummy!) We saw turtles and stingrays off the beach at Akumal Bay. Tulum is 20 minutes away; you're not far from the Coba ruins, 2.5 hrs.to Chichen Itza, in close proximity to TONS of awesome cenotes where we had a blast. We would HIGHLY recommend Sean's place. We made lots of wonderful memories here!

Clean, Well Appointed, Great Location

  • 5 of 5

A cute Casita, the perfect base for your explorations of the Maya Riviera. The neighbourhood feels very safe and welcoming. We made day trips to Acumal for Turtle watching, Lagoona Yalku for snorkeling, Tulum for restaurants and shopping. We also took a long distance bus to Merida for museums and culture (tickets available in Tulum). If you are a good walker you will find the ocean, three cenotes (swimming holes), and a Mexican village no more than 20 minutes walk away: it isn't necessary to have a car since you can easily get a Collectivo or taxi to take you anywhere at a reasonable price. There's so much to see and do nearby.

Everything in the house works well (gas stove and oven, washer/dryer, blender, fridge, fans, a/c) and there are thoughtful touches like hammocks to relax in. The owners keep in touch well and there are property managers living just up the street who are very helpful.

I would return and also recommend this place to friends.

March Break 2016

  • 5 of 5

We arrived on March 9th and stayed until March 19th. We have friends who own a house around the corner and decided to come visit. The house is very well kept and has everything you need for a great vacation. When we arrived the internet was down, I emailed Sean and got a very quick reply, as well as a visit from the very nice people who manage the property letting us know that it was just down temporarily in the area. The beds are comfortable and the backyard outside furniture is as well, they have a great front and back yard patio to just hang out.

There is a great beach across the street, you pay 20 pesos each (2 dollars approx-Canadian). The week we were there the wind was up quite a bit and the red flags were up for the week. They were asking people to leave the water, but as "Martimers" we are used to this and still managed to use our "boogie boards" most days. Our boys (16 & 13) had an excellent week as well. We visited some of the parks nearby (Xcaret and Xel Ha...really nice but expensive!). The people in town are very friendly and we had a few meals at some of the restaurants.

Our boys want to do a resort again next time (only because of the unlimited food & drinks...and they cook better than I do when on vacation) but my husband and I will definitely rent again here in a couple of years, if the property is still available :)

If you go, check out the Factory Glass outlet on the main highway....excellent deals, and the best prices for the plates/dishes you often see is in Playa Del Carmen at the beginning of Fifth Avenue.

Can't wait for our next trip to Mexico!

Great laid-back homebase for vacation

  • 4 of 5

This place was great for our family of four (2 adults & 2 preteens). The house was cute and laid out well to maximize indoor and outdoor space; we were pleased to find a grill, boogie boards, beach towels and coolers there, so we had everything we needed. This is a great place for low-maintenance types who just want to relax. The neighborhood is full of Canadians and Americans living the flipflop lifestyle, happy to help or socialize but basically quiet.

There are two small but worthwhile cenotes within a couple blocks and a short walk/quick drive across the road gets you to the best beach in the area, where naughty coatis wander the parking lot looking for snacks and you can picnic and swim in the ocean or large cenote all day long for just a few dollars. If you want to go out and about, consider La Buena Vida for drinks and ceviche in Akumal (kids will love the hermit crabs on the beach) and check out nearby Coba, where you can rent bikes to cruise around the ruins and climb an ancient pyramid.

A note about local pests:

1. The ants are vigilant; leave so much as a crumb on the counter, and they will be all over that in no time.

2. Be aware of scorpion sting first aid. We were not, but our kid got stung on the front porch. Most common here are the black ones, which are not seriously dangerous but their stings do hurt. Wash the sting, ice it and keep it BELOW the heart, take a couple Advil or aspirin and an allergy pill.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. We are glad you enjoyed our home! Though native to the region, scorpions are generally found only along the jungle areas. We had yet to have seen them on property in our 8 years of ownership. Hopefully we won't see another, and we are glad your son is fine. Generally no worse than a bee sting I am told, benadryl allergy is always a good idea in case of bee or any insect sting, just in case of allergic response. A good idea for anyone on vacation in a tropical location. A med kit is on the property.

Una buena casita!

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I stayed from Christmas night to New years day, 2015. I found it to be perfect in terms of privacy, appointment, cost, convenience, comfort and amenities. This is my 4th trip to Rivera Maya, first having camped on the beach south of Tulum in 1995. My girlfriend's experience of the region was rather different and based on her stay on Cozumel in an all-inclusive resort 6 years ago. It took her a day or two to relax into the setting. I, and she eventually, especially appreciated the proximity of Chemuyil pueblo, a short walk and highlight of the trip. The owner, Cean, was helpful and responsive by email and phone. Highly recommended!
