Hi - My Name is Bill Nieuwkerk. I grew up on Paddy's Creek, just 3 minutes from our newly purchased home. My Wife, Debbie and I live in Pennsylvania. I run a technology division for an Italian Aerospace Company, and Debbie is a Registered Nurse. We have 4 Children, all of whom love coming to Cape Porpoise every year.

WILLEM J NIEUWKERK purchased this cottage in 2014

Why WILLEM J NIEUWKERK chose Southern Coast

When this house became available, my wife & I jumped at the opportunity. It's a wonderful place to live/vacation.

As a boy, my friends & I would frequently sail from Paddy's Creek to Cape Porpoise Harbor or Stage Island for fishing, swimming or camping. Unlike many beaches in Maine where the water is c o l d... Paddy's Creek is swim-able because the sun heats up the dark sand/mud, and when the tide comes in - Presto the water's warm!!!

What makes this home so special, is that many of my childhood memories are still alive today. The local store, Bradbury Brothers is still in operation, where we used to load-up on candy, soda & ice cream. The Wayfarer, where we would have great breakfasts is still serving guests after 50+ years!

What makes this cottage unique

What makes this home special is it's privacy, cozy front porch, access to water. With our 17' sailboat, Kayaks, or skiff w/motor, it's the best way to enjoy all that Cape Porpoise offers (claming, fishing, boating, picnicking & swimming.

Our property is next to Land's End Road. This road is great for kids to ride bikes on, and for leisurely strolls to see the breath-taking view of Cape Porpoise Harbor.

Perfect Spot

  • 5 of 5

The house is adorable and in the perfect spot for a vacation in Maine. It would be hard to find something like this elsewhere. I hope we get to enjoy it again sometime.

Fantastic vacation, beautiful home!

  • 5 of 5

My family (husband, self, 4 children, and in-laws) had the best time at the Nieuwkerk's home. It was beautifully decorated and had a fantastic layout. My husband and I stayed in the king bedroom with our toddler (16 months). The walk-in closet is huge (10x5?) and is almost like a small room with 2 windows and outlets as well. We were able to set up her pack-n-play in there with the baby monitor and she was perfectly comfortable. Our 12-year old son stayed in the study off of the master. It is a private room which I did not necessarily understand after reading the description of the home. I thought the sitting room off of the master was sort of a "nook" - but it's not - it is a completely separate room and it was perfect for him! Our daughters stayed in the bunk room (they loved it) and my in-laws were in the queen room. We could not have asked for a better layout for sleeping arrangements. The home is beautifully decorated and has new appliances. The theme of the home is coastal/beachy and it is relaxing and comfortable. It reminded us of our own home!

Bill and his wife have kayaks, boats, beach toys, beach chairs, a skiff, a sailboat - pretty much any toys (for adults or children) that you could hope for. We are avid kayakers and we went kayaking multiple times. It is only 10 mins to the beaches of Kennebunkport so we went to the beach nearly every day. Gooches and Mother's Beach were our favorites and our children loved them. You can walk to Cape Porpoise, but we chose not to, having to manage 4 children on winding roads. If it was just my husband and I, we definitely would have walked. The drive to Dock Square is just 5 mins and if you are up early (like us!) you can find parking pretty easily. The Maine Diner is about 10 minutes away, as is Wells. York Beach is probably 20 minutes. Old Orchard Beach is about 35mins away if you have a hankering for rides, games and crowds. We have visited Kennebunkport many times in the past and chose to stay more local because there is so much to do.

We travel almost exclusively through VRBO homes simply because it is easier with 4 kids than staying in hotels. This home is the prettiest, best kept, and was the best fit for my family, *by far*. We would absolutely re-book this home for next summer. Bill, we can't thank you enough for renting your home to us. It was definitely our home away from home!

family-friendly gem

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for our family of 4 plus grandma. Our 18mo old could have her own "room" in the huge closet in master bedroom, our 3yr old loved the bunkbeds and grandma had her own space. The house was in great shape, extremely well appointed, fresh/clean and in a super convenient location. Walkable to the cute shops/restaurants in Cape Porpoise. We liked being away from the "scene" of Kennebunkport -- but a 5 minute car ride had us at Dock Square for lunch.

The kayaks and bikes were a great added amenity for our family. The basketball hoop, outdoor shower and new grill were all appreciated by my husband.

The owner was fabulous to work with - by far this was one of our best experiences with a VRBO rental from start to finish.

I would like to retire here!

  • 5 of 5

This is a great place to spend summertime - one week was not enough! The house is in great shape, everything was clean and well kept. We swam in the cove at the bottom of the hill and the water was surprisingly warm. I think its because its a tidal cove - the sun warms up the flats, then the water is warmed by the warm flats. Only improvement would be the addition of a pool in the backyard for when we are too lazy to go out. Nice spot, owners were responsive to our needs for local information. Kennebunkport itself was a fun relaxing town.

Cape Porpoise Gem, tasteful, clean and spacious

  • 5 of 5

I grew up in Cape Porpoise and was looking for a place to stay with family for my parents 50th anniversary ( they are local) This cottage had plenty of space for everyone, and we were able to have the entire anniversary dinner here. It was comfortable, and clean, all the appliances were new and worked well. During the week, those of us who had boats were able to leave them on the shore and paddle out to the cape porpoise islands during the day. We did not use the kayaks or sailboat they have for rent so no comments on that- but the place was nice and we had a great time. I would absolutely recommend to a friend - especially if I were invited to come too!

Beautiful holiday home

  • 5 of 5

In September/October my daughter Diana (32) and I came from Germany to the United States and spent 3 wonderful weeks in Bill`s and his wife`s , beautiful, cosy, clean and well-installed house.

I did not want to make a trip with another place and another bed every day, but wanted "my American home" in a quiet place. And I found it!

Cape Porpoise, Kennebunkport and Goose Beach (where we could lie on deckchairs and walk barefooted on the beach on some days) are such nice places. The Americans we met were extraordnarily friendly towards us and showed a lot of interest.

Two October weeks with sun and blue sky each day from morning to evening made it a dream holiday. And the wonderful Indian Summer ...

We visited the beaches between Kennebunkport and Porthmouth, spent a day at Porthmouth and two in Portland (one with shopping on the only rainy day just after "Matthew" and one on a whale-watching tour in perfect weather.

We saw Shaker Village, Concord and Thoreau`s grave, had a picnic at Sebago Lake, toured to Winnipensaukee Lake and the White Mountains. For two days our friend Roberta from Montana stayed with us and could sleep in her own bedroom, the children`s room.

We went to Boston by Amtrack on Columbus day and toured through Acadia National Park, where we spent the night in a nice motel near Bar Harbour.

We will never forget this wonderful stay in vacationland Maine and the wonderful holiday home we had.
