About Caroline Matz

Doug and I have wanted a home in the woods and we were so glad we found The Chalet. Doug has been a builder most of his life and I was a teacher for 35 years. In retirement, we are enjoying outdoor activities while working on maintaining and updating our homes. We want to provide a one of a kind vacation experience that allows guests to feel truly immersed in their destination! The unique charm of Sisters surrounded by the extraordinary natural beauty of Central Oregon inspires us to create comfortable and exciting accommodations that accentuate the authentic, down-to-earth Central Oregon lifestyle.

There's no doubt that a good night's sleep makes for a fantastic vacation! But what makes a vacation truly remarkable, truly memorable is when you get to experience the authenticity of a place. To feel its 'vibe' and know it's people. To live for a weekend, several days, a week or more... as the locals live. To feel truly immersed in your destination.

We are passionate about our community and hope to share with you the magic of all that Sisters and the surrounding area has to offer!

Caroline Matz purchased this chalet in 2012

Why Caroline Matz chose Central Oregon

My husband, Doug, and I chose this custom log home for its uniqueness, its setting and the size of the property. It was built by a father and his two sons, which made it special. A lot of special touches were included in its building. He was a cabinet-maker and built the cabinets as well. All space was utilized. Inside, the lava rock fireplace is spectacular, absolutely breathtaking, and does the job of heating the home (even though it has an effective heat pump and air cooling.) It is in Crossroads subdivision in the Pine and Aspen trees. The Chalet is centered on a knoll in the middle of 2 acres, so there is separation for privacy, yet you can easily say hi to neighbors walking by. The sun rises and shines through the loft into the cabin, shines on the kitchen and living room side of the cabin and sets on the front porch. There are 4 hiking trails out to the Sisters Trail Alliance which extends through the Deschutes National Forest. We fell in love with the property!

What makes this chalet unique

The position of the building on the site is perfect to receive the sunlight throughout the day. The sun rises at the back door and in the window of the loft bedroom, travels along the living room side of the house, and then sets at the front of the house. The Chalet gets sunlight all day.

The lava-rock fireplace is awe-inspiring...you will see it when you arrive, and hopefully use it when the weather gets cold!!

The porch and outdoor living area is so special, you can choose any spot you desire to settle in. Watch the deer graze in the yards, squirrels play and gather nuts, birds eating seeds. Sit on the western swing...and relax.

Warm hearth, Warm heart

  • 5 of 5

I recently took a road trip from San Francisco, California to Sisters, Oregon for Christmas and stayed at Caroline's Chalet. It was absolutely fantastic. Caroline was super friendly, warm, trustworthy and easy to communicate with to make the booking. The cabin itself is gorgeous and you can see by the pictures. Note: The building on the side of the cabin is not actually attached to it and is just a storage barn, no one lives there. The property is close enough to town to feel super convenient, yet isolated from the other houses around it to feel very private and special. The wood burning stove in the fireplace is definitely one of the highlights of staying here in addition to the log cabin architecture. Caroline provides lots of wood and we used lots. I was able to get the temperature on the mezzanine level up to 80 degrees using just the fireplace...in the middle of winter. Toasty! The kitchen is fully stocked and fun to cook in. In addition to the property, the property manager Beverly (and neighbor) is incredibly helpful and kind. Since we arrived after dark after a slightly harrowing drive through a winter storm, Beverly offered to meet us on the edge of town and have us follow her to the cabin. I've stayed at 5 Pine Lodge in town once before which is really nice, but the cabin felt extra special. I went with family this time, but could see it being great for a romantic getaway too. Highly recommend!

Perfect hideout close to sisters

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at the cabin after what was a record-breaking snowfall event in the sisters area. Doug had plowed the snow from the driveway and made it easy for us to use the carport and get in through the back. The cabin was tastefully quaint and had a wonderful fireplace that we made ample use of. We did lose power during the day, Caroline and Doug checked in to make sure we were ok and restocked the firewood. The location was perfect, minutes from downtown with amazing views of Broken top, the Sisters Mountains, and Black Crater it was also close to Hoodoo ski resort. I would imagine its a short drive to hiking and nature trails in the summer. We loved the cabin and our three year old wanted to stay longer, we certainly plan to return next year.

Great 2 night stay

  • 5 of 5

We chose the cabin based on location and other positive reviews and it was the perfect choice. From the linens to the floor, everything was very clean. Appliances etc. were all in working order. It truly felt like we were staying at "our" cabin.

Regarding location, it was a perfect blend of city and mountain. We could be in Bend with a short drive and in the mountains within 15 minutes.

Directions were straight forward and the owner was very responsive to questions and our deposit was returned quickly.
