Had a wonderful 2 weeks in this spacious villa. Garden is huge and within walking distance of Barga. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants a peaceful break in Tuscany.
a comfortable house in a brilliant location
We spent two weeks at the house and enjoyed every minute of it. The house is spacious and comfortable and with the shutters closed stays pleasantly cool on hot days. The pool is about 3m diameter and about 80-90cm deep so not really a swimming pool but is excellent for children and for cooling down after a walk in the hills. We enjoyed the walk to Sommocolonia, one of the hilltop villages nearby. Barga is a lovely mediaeval town and the Duomo is well worth a visit. Grotta del Vento with its beautiful stalactite formations is stunning. We also visited Castenuovo di Garfagnana where there was an international music festival at the time, much of which was taking place in public piazzas, great atmosphere. Pisa and Lucca are interesting. Even Florence is not oh, so far away (parking could be a nightmare, try Parterre multi level underground carpark or else take a train). Water sports in Bagni di Lucca, rather pricey, so we gave them a miss, but I'm sure they are a great experience. A great gelateria in Barga, in the piazza, a lovely pasticcheria/yoghurteria near the local Conad, where we got most of our groceries. Regular street markets. Plenty of good places to eat out.
Our host and the house keepers Veronica and Nicola were available to answer any questions. We accidentally broke an antique lamp shade which is not easily replaceable, but we feel the amount taken off from our deposit was a fair one, so even that leaves a positive feeling at the end of the lovely holiday.
Beautiful house, perfect location.
Heavily shuttered and shaded house which is essential in the Tuscan summer heat. Very comfortable beds and plenty of space for our nearly four adult family. Scenery so impressive from the garden the children forgot to complain about the lack of wifi and we were grateful for it. We ate most meals at home gazing across the valley at the panoramic mountain view so incredible it was hard to believe. Would have appreciated an oven dish or two and maybe a baking tray for an authentic lasagne. Plunging into the overground pool was an extra luxury much welcome after sunbathing in the large arborous garden. We did not have a car and explored the environs on foot, even walking across the valley via an ancient donkey path to the public poolside terrace in Albiana.... can be seen from the villa. Walking is up and down, sometimes sharp inclines, so not for those without sure footing. Everything accessible by car if you have one. There is a bus service from Lucca to Barga if you don't want to pay the 75-100 euros it will cost by taxi. Barga.. the nearest town is a medieval habitat built on the top of the mountain with narrow streets and many restaurants / bars. Perched right on the top is the large church where you can find views second to none, 360% of mountains and villages interspersed among the trees. We enjoyed the annual Jazz festival here at the end of August where we listened to world class musicians improvising in a local bar till the wee hours. On our last day we were a little surprised by the 50 euro charge for cleaning, especially as we had spent the previous day making sure all was left as found and we hadn't been previously warned of this charge (no mention in the contract). We would definitely go again, amazing, relaxing, adventurous, comfortable and happy holiday.
Sorry for the misunderstanding about the final cleaning fee. Usually we perform the reception and on that occasion we provide all the details, unfortunately in this case the reception was carried out by the cleaning lady who probably has not supplied such information. We note the lack of oven dishes and pan for lasagna, we will add to the supply of kitchenware. Thanks for the positive review.
Gastvrije ontvangst.
The house is near the town of Bagni di Lucca typical and known for its thermal baths. The city of Lucca is easily accessible, it takes 40 minutes to travel the 35 km road Ludovica (to right of the river Serchio), where you can observe the characteristic Ponte del Diavolo in Borgo a Mozzano. From Lucca are within easy reach of the main art cities of Tuscany: Pisa, Pistoia, Florence, Siena, as well as the goals of the Versilia sea and the Tuscan coast.
Locally, there are activities for all ages - bicycle hire, horse riding (very close to the property), tennis, open-air pool, trekking in the mountains, visiting local areas of interest, music (in particular Opera Barga and Barga Jazz) as well as a series of village festivals.
