About Janis Marchment
We are a Canadian couple, and new owners in Merida. We have a hobby farm in Langley, BC Canada and have 2 dogs - Logan and Chester, the 7 lb mighty guard dog, cats, some Rocky Mountain horses (Hollywood and Celebrity) and 2 llamas - Oprah and Harmony, and a peacock named Ravi junior. We fell in love with Merida and all it has to offer, and purchased a home that we can enjoy for only a small part of the year. For that reason, we chose to have others enjoy our gorgeous historic home the remainder of the year.
Janis Marchment purchased this House in 2014
Why Janis Marchment chose Centro
We fell in love with Merida and knew we had to be a part of this amazing city. We love the Colonial facades of the Historic homes, and love to look inside. After renting a few times , we wanted to be right in the heart, and chose the Santiago area for our purchase. We had rented farther out of the main area, but decided that when you want to watch all the activities in the evening its rather nice to not have to walk too far back home. We chose our property because it was so close to all the vibrancy and liveliness in the parks and squares and restaurants which we love, and yet had a peaceful ambience once you open the doors. We named the home Lola quite by accident as the previous owners Pug was named Lola, and our tabbycat is named Lola, so we just began calling it Lola, so Lola it must stay. We love our home for its high beamed ceilings, historic doors, thick walls, and shaded patio and its many charms. The home has all the amenities you will need, and is such a peaceful oasis in this safe and wonderful city. The barrio where Casa Lola is situated is Santiago, and in the morning you can hear the delightful songs of the local school children, and purchase fresh fruit just down the street. The neighbourhood is friendly, and once inside the home, you can't help but feel relaxed, but do go out evenings to the Zocalo and parks experience the vibrancy of the city. There are so many events, and museums and fabulous architecture that you will never tire of this city.
What makes this House unique
Our home is in the best location in Merida Centro. We are just 2 blocks to the Main Square, and just a few steps to restaurants, and parks and museums. Our property is a sanctuary in the heart of the city. You will not find a better location. No need to get a cab home after a late night, and no need to walk for blocks and blocks in the dark in the evening.....everything is so close. Rent a car for a few days (Parking can be arranged close by) and see the local ruins, and drive to Izamal to see the yellow city, or , from our home take a bus to Progresso for the day to enjoy the beach and take the bus back almost right to your doorstep. Its all right there.

Great Location/Beautiful Property
The house shows like a model home. I was surprised of the rules where it required us to clean our dishes yet charges a cleaning fee. The beds were not comfortable, and we left a day early because of the back issues the bed created for myself and my wife. The house is not children friendly with the second room located outside of the main house. Fortunately, there was a blow up mattress. There was also many easy to break items located through out the house. Other than that, we loved the look of the house and the location.
Thank you Norman for the review. I do find it strange that you didnt find the beds comfy as most of the guests have raved about the comfortable beds. But i also get that everyone has their own idea of what that is. I do say that i take adults only but have often had people with children withput issue. The reason i do say adults only is to do with the breakable items and the pool. So i do understand if it wasnt ideal for ypu with a child and thats why i do advise that i do prefer adults only. That being said i dont want to turn away anyone wanting to stay as we are close to everything and thats easier with kids. For cleaning we do ask that the dishes are done but nothing else and its not a deal breaker if you dont. We charge a fee as we do need to pay it and sometimes a guest stay requires a lot of cleanup. It does depend upon yhe guest of course. Thank you for your stay and im glad you enjoyed the house. Janis
Awesome House, Perfect Location!
We have made many trips to Merida and have stayed in perhaps six or more different houses. I would say this one is the best.............it is a great house and such a fabulous location if you want to take advantage of all the downtown activities and restaurants.
Also the management team is by far the best I have encountered in Merida. Extremely responsive and attentive to all details.
I have to mention the house decor. I don't think I can adequately describe it and you won't believe it when you see it. They have collected all kinds of wonderful items.....I honestly don't know that I saw everything that is in the house. It just defies words.
Also very safe area, Street is quiet at night. Like all the other reviews have said, this house is first class!
Thank you Ron for the great review. I'm really happy you loved the decor of the house, as that was so much fun for me to do the decorating. I'm always finding amazing treasures to add and its something I love to do and hope others enjoy. Thanks as well for your comments on our property managers as they are fairly new to us, but we are finding that they are really prompt should something come up so I'm glad you found it that way as well. We would love to have you stay again. Thank you for booking our home. Janis
Beautiful house in a great location!
The house is comfortable, beautifully decorated, and within walking distance of almost everything! We did have some challenges with the washing machine and no hot water on our last morning.
Thank you Linda for the great review. We're happy that the location was perfect for you. I'm sorry there was an issue with the washing machine - that's annoying I know, but has been remedied since your visit. We would love to have you stay again. Janis
Comfortable and restful stay at Casa Lola during Christmastime.
Casa Lola (CL) treated our family to a restful and relaxing 4 nights. Clean, well maintained and managed, we were very happy about our choice and alternative to a hotel, in beautiful historic Merida. As a young family of 4, our two kids (18 months and 4) by foot and baby carriers soaked up the old-town during a beautiful time of year. We spent a lot of time in the home while visiting and found CL very comfortable. CL supported our cooking (breakfast) and rests during the day. We had quiet and restful sleeps at night. Thanks to Liz and Janis (the owner) for your help and advise ahead of and during our stay. Janis, your home is a gem with the different antiques we wondered how many trips you must've taken to get some of them there. My personal favorites are the horse hitching posts. My wife and I highly recommend this property to families. We hope to come back in the future when our girls are older. Merida, its people and CL has left an impact on us.
A few points for those staying at CL:
-Additional electricity charge is minimal. $10 for us.
-Took about 5 minutes to run water for hot showers/dishes. Run pump in am for 10 minutes to get water for the day.
-Lockbox out front holds keys to get in (was not there when we arrived but was soon resolved) and when leaving
-Calle 66 can be car busy. Noise is limited to front room morning rush hour) and we found the back part of the house very peaceful. These noises did not bother us.
-Proximity to central square, markets, Paseo is 15 minutes by foot.
-Lots of restaurants, Good take out Pizza on Calle 57 around the corner
-Cars parked out front of CL on the street overnight. Calle 64 and Calle 59 has daytime parking.
-24 hour parking on Calle 62 at Calle 57 (beside La Chaya Maya). Very clean.
-Pool is not heated but its refreshing after a hot day of sightseeing. Pool cleaners
came one afternoon while we were in the residence at no disruption to us.
Thanks John for the great review. We would love to have you stay again. Merida is a magical place for sure. We're glad you loved the location of the house, and enjoyed the pool and the antique decor. I have hauled antiques to Merida from my travels, as well as found many treasures in Mexico, and its a joy for me to decorate Casa Lola with them. There are also local spots like Izamal and Valladolid as well as the ruins of Uxmal and area that are amazing spots to visit and I highly recommend those places as well. Come back. Janis
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Lola. The house is on a bus line but we barely noticed inside. The back patio and dip pool is where one can truly relax after spending fun in the heart of the historic central district! The appointments are very nice...they have done a great job of mixing the old with new, and melding cultures in their decorating. (so nice to have comfortable furniture in the salon!)
We had a great time there and would recommend this house as an excellent place for up to 2 couples.
My reason for not awarding a full 5 stars is due to not clearly realizing the cost of 2 incidentals...although small, it did seem as nickle and diming:
I would like to point out that if you are not staying a full week, you will be paying an additional $10-$12usd for parking on the next block.
It seems to be in vogue to charge extra for the electric bill at Merida transient rentals. I find it hard to believe that the electricity in Yucatan State is so much more than is is in Quintana Roo. I get that summer months use a lot of ac but they seem to manage just fine elsewhere.
Like I said, these are small disqualifiers but thought I would note them. If you haven't been to Merida, make your reservation now...you will love it!
