About the property

A private, 4 bedroom, 4 1/2 bath, custom built polynesian inspired beach home

Casa de las Tortugas (House of the Turtles) is a unique, polynesian inspired beach front home with spectacular views. It is located on the white sands of the Gulf of Mexico's Emerald Coast. The color of the ocean can be a beautiful emerald green or the turquoise blue of the caribbean. The house is located in an area called Sunset Beach about 3.5 kilometers or 2 miles from the small fishing village of Sisal. We are very lucky to be able to watch spectacular sunsets as well as sunrises. Sisal was once a major port from which all the henequin fiber known as Sisal was exported to the world. It is now a quiet, safe and friendly village. Sisal has a variety of small stores where you can buy the basics as well as fresh seafood, local fruits, vegetables and tortillas. There are several restaurants all featuring seafood as well as typical Yucatecan dishes. Sisal is about an hour drive to Merida and the airport. Merida is a beautiful safe city overflowing with cultural activities and events. There are free concerts, dances and serenades every day of the week in different parks in the downtown Historical Center as well as a symphony orchestra, museums and art galleries. Within an hours drive from Merida you can visit Mayan ruins, cenotes, haciendas and other beach towns.

Casa de las Tortugas is located in a remote área rich in nature. You can walk for hours on the beaches, collecting many kinds of seashells, go in and out of the calm ocean water and most of the time see no other people. You may see hundreds of butterflies, a wide variety of colorful birds, as well as white and gray pelicans flying by. Casa de las Tortugas faces a Reserve and depending on the time of year and weather, one can see hundreds of flamingoes flying in and out of the Reserve which is an amazing sight and wonderful photographic opportunity.

Casa de las Tortugas has Direct TV that streams from New York and free WI-FI. Maid service 2-3 days a week is included. Services include making the beds, supplying clean towels and sheets as needed, sweeping the floors and terraces and basic cleaning of the bathrooms. Additional days or services can be requested for an additional charge.

The main living area is located on the second floor allowing guests to enjoy beautiful views of the ocean. This spacious home has both indoor dining for eight people and outdoor dining for eight people on the beautiful screened patio adjacent to the swimming pool and spa. There is a half bath off the kitchen/dining area.

The kitchen is well equipped with all stainless steel appliances including a dish washer and large pantry. Bottled water is provided. The house has an open concept living area which includes the kitchen, dining room and living room all with sliding glass doors opening up to a screened in patio, large pool deck, infinity pool and heated jacuzzi. The view is spectacular!

This is a four bedroom, four and a half bathroom home with a fully equipped kitchen on the main living area as well as a small kitchen in the third bedroom/apartment and an efficiency kitchen in the fourth studio bedroom. The spacious master bedroom and second bedroom have king size beds and are located on the second level which is the main living area with beautiful ocean views. The third bedroom/apartment is on the first floor and has a partial ocean view with sliding glass doors leading out to a large stone patio and the beach path. The third bedroom includes a private bedroom with built in closet, cabinets, king size bed, bathroom, a small kitchen and living área with an additional double bed for lounging or guests. It has a small refrigerator, gas range and oven, microwave, toaster oven, and coffee maker. It is perfect for couples or family members that want more privacy. The fourth studio bedroom is also on the first floor and has two twins beds, closet with shelves, bathroom with shower, table and four chairs, and a small efficiency kitchen.

The beach in front of our house is effectively private with white sand and calm ocean waters. You can walk far into the ocean and the water will rarely be above your chest. It is perfect for swimming, kayaking (2 kayaks with life vests are available), and relaxing as you watch the clouds float by and pelicans fly overhead. After your swim in the ocean or walk on the beach, rinse off in the outside shower and step into the infinity pool or spa that looks straight out to the ocean. It is mesmerizing and the answer to a relaxing, special vacation.

The English-speaking property owners live full-time next door. They will welcome and orient you to Casa de las Tortugas, and be on-call to handle any unforeseen issues and provide advice for planning activities during your stay. If your vacation plans focus on just enjoying the property and ocean, airport pickup and grocery shopping can be arranged with the property owners.

Once you arrive at Casa de las Tortugas, you may not want to leave!!

About Karen Fisher

Our family bought 2 ocean front lots here in 2007 and began building our beachhomes in 2009. We weren't building vacation homes. We built homes to live here year round. We moved here from Missouri. Our dream was to live on the ocean, so we took a leap of faith , sold everything and began our new life. We now can't imagine living anywhere else.

Karen Fisher purchased this house in 2011

Why Karen Fisher chose Sisal

We originally wanted to move to the caribbean side of the Yucatán Peninsula in Playa Del Carmen. We soon discovered that oceanfront homes or property in that area were hard to find and very expensive. Some friends of ours who live in Playa Del Carmen had purchased ocean front lots in Sunset Beach, just outside of Sisal. They hoped to build a home there some day. They loved the gulf side because it is very beautiful, peacefull, safe and affordable. We decided to take a look at the area. It reminded of us of the Destin, Florida area which we have always loved. We were drawn to the privacy and the nature that we found here, plus the friendly people and easy access to the beautiful city of Merida. We decided to buy 2 lots and 2 years later we started building our first house which we still live in year round. Two years later we started building the second house and that is the one we are now renting.

What makes this house unique

This house is all about the views, beach, and ocean. There is always something interesting to see and watch. It is a fun, comfortable house to be in. The beach is private, quiet and you can walk for miles. It is always an adventure to see what seashells you will find or sites you will see.

Amazing location and wonderful host and staff

  • 5 of 5

We spent 11 days at Casa de Tortugas and I have to say it was one if not the most relaxing holiday I have had! we were basically on a private beach, no people around for miles, the ocean was beautiful and very calm in the mornings, and fun in the afternoons when the wind picks up. The house is beautifully designed and decorated, very practically, with a large screened porch. We kept the glass doors open all the time and barely used the AC in the main rooms. Karen was super helpful with everything and responsive to any request. We had Reyna come to wash pots and pans and empty the dishwasher everyday (paid a bit extra for that) and I have to say it was the best decisions. She is very welcoming, barely noticed she is there, and totally trustworthy. Raul made sure we had everything we needed and even went into town to place an order at la Palapa de Soco. Karen place an order for us the first night we arrived so we did not have to cook that night and it was great. The fish is fresh, the octupus is amazing and the lobster tails delicious and cheap! They deliver to the house. Have pesos because there are practically no credit cards accepted in Sisal.

Karen arranged for Juan Carlos to come and meet us and he organized outings for us with Kike Dive. We did snorkeling in the coral reefs (not reccomended if you have motion sickness because you go pretty far out), a visit to the Flamingo areas and fresh water cenotes in the mangrove areas (Flamingos are here not in Celestun) and to snorkel at a sunken ship (very close to Sisal and we saw turtles, sting rays, barracudas and puffer fish). Kike prepared an amazing ceviche on each of our three trips and had water and sodas. Its not super cheap, but you get a 3 to 4 hour trip with people who are very knowledgeable of the birds and marine life in the area. Really a treat.

I took my 78 and 82 year old parents, they stayed in one of the apartments on the lower level and loved every minute of their vacation. My mom is already planning to bring other members of the family next year!

I cannot recommend Casa de Tortugas enough. If you want peace and relaxation, away from the noise and buzz of more developed resot areas, this is the place for you! Thanks Karen!

We stayed for 7 days. Husband, me and our 4 kids, ages 18-7. Everyone had an amazing time! It coudlnt have been more perfect. Felt more than comfortable with the property owner and her helpful staff. The beach was so peaceful and private. Pool and hot tub was amazing. Home had all the neccesties we needed. Cooked and had food delivered one night, then had a pleasant little family that cane and cooked for us one night as well. Drove into Sisal about 4 times and felt safe and comfortable each time. Property owner is one amazing person!!! So helpful and kind! Already trying to find the time to come back!!!! Went to the ruins one day! Worth the trip!!!!! Seen the turtles released into the water in Sisal on the beach! Trip was just perfect! Thank you to Karen and her staff! Y'all helped make the trip perfect!

Owner's Response: Your family was a pleasure to have here! I am glad we got to see the baby turtles released together. I went a few weeks ago but there were no babies that had hatched. In front of our house we have seen lots of shells but we keep missing them coming out. It will be great to see you all again! Take care, Karen

Private Beach-stunning luxury home

  • 5 of 5

After a week in Merida, we were ready for some downtime. We walked in the house and the wow factor was off the charts. This home is seriously beautiful and if you enjoy privacy, this beach is for you. The waters were calm and tranquil. The entire week we only saw 2 people walk by and a few kayaks and boats. I was surprised that there was little to no seaweed in the ocean or on the sand-it really was perfection. There is a predictable and gorgeous breeze that kicks in every afternoon around 3 or 4 pm that we looked forward to. It makes you long to continue to lay pool side, grab a glass of wine or get the blender going for some margaritas. The infinity pool is delicious and really all we did was lounge at the pool, swim in the ocean, and head to the local restaurants at night. This is the place to unwind in complete luxury. Given the isolation, I will say that having Karen next door was delightful. She gave us our space but was always available to make sure we had everything we need. She is a kind and genuine person and I can tell you that we will definitely return. You will need to rent a car but it is worth it to get to this gem of a house. The pictures do not do the home justice. Thank you Karen for opening your home to us.

Very beautiful house, nice ocean view, privacy and peace!

Loved to stay here! Bring your groceries for one whole week and forget about the world! Relax, rest and have lots of fun! Karen and her staff will make your stay an unfforgetable one!

If you are willing to go out to town there are a few good restaurants for seafood. Merida is a 40 min. drive and if willing to go further, Celestum, Chichen Itza, Valladolid, Uxmal and many other interesting places are within a 3 hour drive max. and the roads are in very good conditions! Do recomend a GPS or any app that will tell you how to get there!

Definitely coming back!

Karen was such a great host! She was super helpful, answered all our pre-travel questions, and even made a run to the liquor store for us while she was in Merida. Her staff was all friendly and great. Would highly recommend hiring Lupita to cook dinner and to have Chris from ZimZoom pick you up at the airport in Cancun and take to you to Merida to rent a car.

The house is amazing - felt like we are on an episode of House Hunters International. It is well stocked with everything you need - blow dryers, water, books, towels, every kitchen utensil/appliance you might need. We never saw anyone else on the beach and enjoying beach combing, kayaking, and lounging by the pool every day. Sisal is a great town and everybody was very friendly. We ate at several restaurants in town and shopped in a few local markets for groceries and ice cream. We will be back!
