About the property

2 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Historic On The Outside, Completely Remodeled On The Inside.

Our house offers you a great place to relax and enjoy all that Bend has to offer. We started with a “millworker’s house” that had fallen into disrepair and spent 18 months modernizing the inside while keeping the “Old Bend” flavor on the outside. We tried to reuse and recycle wherever possible. We focused on energy efficiency during the cold winters and hot summers by putting in maximum insulation in walls, ceiling and floor, installing an energy efficient on-demand water heater and heat pump that can warm and cool the house.

The Aspen House is our home-away-from-home that we are happy to share with you. It has two bedrooms (Full bed in each) and one bathroom (shower only, no tub). The shower surround is a unique mosaic mural made of recycled glass tile. The kitchen and bath countertops are recycled barn wood. The kitchen is fully equipped and the dining area seats 4. The floor plan (oak flooring throughout) is very open, with dining, kitchen and living room all connected. The living room has a built-in sofa that can accommodate a couple of extra sleepers if needed (extra bedding available). We have a washer and dryer for your use, and a boot dryer, too. We have wifi, but no TV (there’s too much other great stuff to do to sit around watching TV!) There is off-street parking (in the driveway) for one or two cars and ample street parking. We have a small deck off the kitchen that drops down to a paved patio. Great for relaxing evenings under the stars.

The house gives you easy access to the river bike paths, the Old Mill Center, downtown Bend, and to Mt Bachelor’s world-class skiing (Colorado Street that takes you to the mountain is just 2 blocks away).

About Manuela Huso

We are long-time Oregon residents who live in Western Oregon, but love to come to Bend to ski, bike, paddle and hike… things we love to do in Corvallis, but in Bend we can do them without the rain! We have family and friends here and enjoy visiting as often as possible. But since we can’t actually live here (at least not yet) we thought we would open our house to others while we weren’t using it. We hope you’ll enjoy it!

Manuela Huso purchased this house in 2012

Why Manuela Huso chose Bend

We seem to always be attracted to older, under-loved homes that we can bring back to life. Our home in Corvallis that we’ve lived in for 19 years was built in 1909. Our previous one (lived in it for 10 years) was built in 1932. This one is our youngest yet, having been built in the 40s! We fell in love with the little bungalow in a great location that needed some serious TLC. Not too big, not too small… just right. We had a lot of fun (and some frustration) working on it and decorating it with mementos from our lives overseas. Now we are happy to be able to share it with others.

What makes this house unique

Location, location, location. Not to mention a really comfortable place to hang out and relax. We can walk to everything, and many people walk past our house, too. Even the Cycle-pub goes by regularly and we always run to the front door to wave and cheer them on.

Cute house, great location, have suggestions for comfort

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay and have a few suggestions for comfort. We are unable to sleep on memory foam in the mattress pads because it heats up from body temperature. To compensate we slept on top of quilt to give insulation from the memory foam. Comfort in the living room would be enhanced with either thicker foam on the benches or replace them with comfy couch and chairs. Also, some repair to loose spindals on the dinning chairs is needed. Overall we enjoyed the quaint house and location was great! Thank you so much!

Also, we've repaired the dining room chairs. Again, thanks for staying in our house and for your thoughtful suggestions. We hope you'll stay with us again in the future! Pleasant well located home

  • 4 of 5

It is a very nice, small, well appointed house. It is a few blocks from downtown and walking distance to a very nice grocery store and the Crux brewery. (Great beer) Unlike other homes we have rented they did not skimp on things like appliances, dish, pots, heating (I suspect cooling). The WiFi was perfect. There is no TV but that was fine with us. We have not turned on ours, at home, in months.

We were just two, my wife and myself; for us it was perfect. It might be a tight squeeze for unrelated couples for an extended period. We did not use the back patio which would have made it seem larger. The tankless hot water heater does mean 4 people could take showers and not run out of hot water. (Some places we have rented we have been hard press to get in two showers.)

Be prepared for a "no shoe policy" and bring slippers. (It is a hard choice when you forget to turn the light off in the kitchen, have your shoes on and are about to leave.)

BEST PLACE TO STAY IN BEND!!!

  • 5 of 5

The Aspen House is an amazing place in location, convenience, and amenities and necessities. Everything is in easy walking distance. We took the cycle pub passing our rental house and making our way to bars down town. That is a great way to point out locations/bars/restaurants you want to visit. Manuela is an amazing host/owner and was very easy to reach out to. We were emailing and texting before and during our stay. I feel like she is a friend with a place in Bend. Thank you Manuela for everything and I hope to visit and stay again in the future. Everything was clean and exactly as shown in the photos plus very reasonably priced. It really is the place I will plan to stay at on my next visit to beautiful Bend, Oregon.
