About Melinda Roughton

We are empty-nesters with one son in college, and one son a lawyer in NYC. My husband and I have a commuter marriage. I live here on St. Simons Island and work as the Executive Director of Glynn County Family Connection (which works to benefit children and families in our community). My husband is the Managing Editor of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. We have a commuter marriage. My husband is a year or so away from retiring, and he travels most weekends, or I go up to Atlanta. We live in the main house here and rent the guest house. When guests are here, they have the entire garden and pool area in between the houses in total privacy. We stay at our house and in our front and side gardens. You won't see us, unless you want to.

Melinda Roughton purchased this cottage in 2014

There is total privacy with a large secured fence, so dogs (not more than one or two) can roam freely and can't get out. The bathrooms have beautiful custom tile and it is beautifully decorated throughout. Our property is priced realizing that you will need to drive (about 5-`10 minutes to the beach). Or, ride your bike (about 15 minutes).

We are thankful that we got to spend a week in this beautiful cottage. Our time relaxing by the pool was the best part of our trip. We would definitely love to stay here again!

Even better than it looks in the pictures

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed in the cottage for 2 weeks, late summer 2016. The hosts were amazing. It is small, but easily accommodated our party of 2 adults, 3 teens, and a toddler. It was hot in July but you will want to spend your time in the pool. The landscaping makes the backyard a true oasis. Tons of great food close by. Jekyll Island is a short drive. Highly recommended. We will be booking again.

Wonderful week at the Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week in this cottage with my grandmother, two girls and our little labradoodle. The cottage was perfect for our family and was very cozy, quiet and private. Our girls loved playing in the heated pool and we also enjoyed the spa. The home is near Redfern Village with restaurants and shops, and a quick drive to the Village, Pier, Lighthouse, etc. and the beach. The owners were great and helped us with everything we needed. The house was equipped with everything we needed, was clean, and beautifully decorated. We can't wait to stay again. Thank you for a wonderful week in St. Simons!

A private oasis - perfect for us and our pups!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot say enough good things about our stay. First, the location is great - centrally located on the island and is just around the corner from restaurants, shopping and the beach. The neighborhood was easy to find and essentially pretty quiet. There was some construction on a house nearby during the day, but nothing that interfered with our trip. The cottage itself is smaller, but the space has been utilized well and suited us just fine. The outdoor space was fantastic and had several areas for relaxing, an outdoor shower (so helpful coming in from the beach!) and of course the great pool and spa. The fenced-in yard/garden was a major plus as we were able to let our two dogs run free without worry. The cottage overall had the essentials and the owner was incredibly helpful - very quick with responses (even when she was out of the country!) and made sure we were as comfortable as possible. A few things to note for those that stay (and you should!) - 1. As stated in other reviews, there is no cable. The Smart TV was a huge help, but we also brought our own HDMI hook-up so we wouldn't miss football. 2. If you bring your dogs (and again - you should!) - be sure to take note that the majority of the back yard is stone, so keep that in mind when it comes to paws as it can be rough. 3. The washer and dryer onsite was a HUGE help and very easy to navigate. With daily trips to the beach and pool, washing towels (which are provided) was a must. Also helped to have no dirty clothes when we arrived home!

Overall we were incredibly pleased with the rental and will absolutely plan to stay again in the future.

Birthday week

  • 5 of 5

This was honestly one of the best experiences that I have had with a vacation rental. I enjoyed my time in the cottage and will be back again.

The house was spotless and wonderfully decorated was a true French cottage and a beach getaway. The pool and the foliage in the yard made me feel as if I was at a tropical island retreat, extremely private and well maintained. The yard was fenced and safe for my dog. The homeowner (or amazing hostess) was amazing about providing information and took care of us with 1st class treatment. The location is close to everything, and was even perfect for a day away to go to Savannah. I would recommend this rental to my family and any of my friends.

Perfect getaway for us and our pups!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this lovely cottage for a week at the end of July and couldn't have been happier with our stay! The property sleeps six, but it is a "cottage" -- the living area is small, but smartly designed and thoughtfully outfitted to make the most of space. Plus you have four doors to the pool/patio area that can be opened to dramatically increase the living space, with outdoor couches and tables to enjoy.

The cottage itself is definitely lovely, but the star of the show is the stunning backyard -- loads of room for our two pups to safely explore, a great privacy fence so you're secluded from the surrounding houses, plenty of outside seating to relax or enjoy a meal poolside, an indulgent outdoor shower, and of course a beautiful pool which gets great sun (you can catch some shade under the pergola or umbrellas).

It was dead quiet during our stay. The cottage is inland, but the beaches are only a short ride away and the location is very convenient to several local restaurants and two well-appointed grocery stores. The owners provide a binder with helpful information about local attractions & day trips, and they were helpful and immediately responsive when we had a question. We had lots of ideas about how to spend our week, but the cottage was so restful & wonderful we spent most of our time relaxing in the beautiful backyard! It was wonderful to be able to bring our dogs on this trip and they had a great time lounging poolside with us. We've recommended the home to several friends who are dog owners and we're already looking forward to returning!

Two things to "know before you go" -- neither is a negative, both are just shared as helpful tips:

1. There is a SmartTV, but no cable. You'll find plenty to entertain yourselves via the owners' Netflix, Amazon & Hulu services or you can hook up your iPad via your own HDMI cable. We actually enjoyed not having cable -- it helped us relax! The wi-fi at the cottage worked well & we had no bandwidth issues while streaming video or doing a bit of work.

2. The cottage has a toaster oven, stovetop & a grill, but not a full-sized oven -- just something to keep in mind in case you're bringing food with you to cook.
