Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

When you follow the secluded tree-lined driveway and see this charming country home nestled into 60 acres of expansive open views of the surrounding dairy and horse farms and panoramic views of the Catskills and Berkshire Mountains, you’ll know you’ve come to the right place. Smell the fresh mountain air, feel the cool breezes blowing through the trees, listen to the soft chirping of the birds passing overhead, or the occasional crowing of a rooster from one of the many nearby farms.

The house, originally built as a hunting cabin in the 1960’s, has been expanded and modernized for full year round comfort. A fully equipped open kitchen looks to a cathedral ceilinged living-area with French doors that lead out to a private enclosed porch.

Located just a 1/4 mile from the quaint village of Ancramdale, is where you’ll find The Farmer’s Wife’s Market & Catering Co., The Grainery, serving ice cream and yogurt from the local dairy, Ronnybrook Farms, and a post office. If a bigger town with a large supermarket is what you’re after, take a scenic 10-minute drive to Millerton by travelling east on Route 8.

Millerton, bordering on CT, has a movie theatre that offers both Indie and feature films and houses a café and gallery on the second floor. Explore the many antique stores, restaurants, and a great book store called Oblong Books that has a full floor dedicated to children’s books and games. There is a biking and hiking trail that begins at the old RR depot and winds south through 10 miles of lush paved trails to the town of Amenia.

Copake Lake is only a 10 minute drive north up Route 3 where you can motor boat, water ski, fish, or jet ski. If you take Route 22 north and fork east onto Route 344 you’ll be headed toward the Taconic Park and now a great swimming hole, which was once a quarry. This is a great place for families to cool off or soak up the sun. From here Bash Bish Falls is just a short drive or bike ride away. You can either walk down to an observation area where you can sit on the rocks and enjoy the falls. Or for the more athletic, park at the bottom of the falls and either hike up the path 3/4 mile or climb along the rocks and through the dozens of water pools to where the falls begin.

If you were to continue your drive north on Route 22, and then make a right and head east on Route 23, you will come to the town of Hillsdale. You’ll find continuous antique shops and restaurants along the way. Next, you'll see Catamount Ski Area and a well known 4 star restaurant called The Suisse Hutte. Catamount offers downhill skiing both day and night.

The next stop, and only another few miles further, is the turn-of-the-century New England town of Great Barrington, MA. This town is loaded with boutiques and eateries to satisfy a wide variety of tastes. Continuing through to the end of town and a little further northeast brings you to yet another great ski resort called Butternut Mt. Butternut offers dozens of beautifully groomed slopes, 2 lodges and a snow tubing park.

Open year round, Taghanic Lake and State Park, is just a few miles west of the house. This park has acres and acres of beaches, ballfields, and picnic areas with outdoor barbeque grills. Lifeguards are on duty all summer long in designated swimming zones. Pedal boats and row boats can be rented by the hour. Or if you prefer, bring your own kayack, canoe or windsurf board.

A great get-away from New York Metro area

  • 5 of 5

This house has a homey atmosphere with many personal decorations -- old photos of the house, people who used to live there, and original paintings. We felt like that we had lived there for decades and just came back from a long road trip. A very unique relaxed feeling. Everything we needed was there (e.g., shampoo, sugar, blanket), and they were well organized and in good condition.

There is a screened in porch with amazing views of a mountain ridge. With the french doors open, the porch becomes an extension of the living room and brings the outside in. You feel like that you are in nature from the comfort of the home. The one small downside is that you can still hear cars from the highway.

We spent a long weekend with our dog and enjoyed playing frisbee with him, running back to the kitchen for a snack, laying down and relaxing on the porch, and repeating the cycle... We had an amazing childlike summer get-away.

If you're looking for a break and a great place to do nothing in particular we highly recommend it.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

If you want to get away to a beautiful, peaceful home, this is the place. The property is very private and the views are beautiful. The house is very well equipped, with everything you need to be comfortable. Wifi works well, if you need to work or just have contact with family and friends. There is Dish tv and Netflix, so you can watch tv and movies. The town is small, but there is a great little place for breakfast or lunch and meals to go, called The Farmer's Wife. It is such a relaxing experience if you just want a quiet weekend away. In the winter, the fireplace is a plus. Not too far from the city for a great escape.

Lovely week in the country

  • 5 of 5

We rented this home for one week to visit with friends in the area. We are a family of four, including two boys, and a small dog. The home was perfect for our family. We loved sitting on the screened-in porch, to read, play games, or just enjoy the fabulous view. The home is very cozy, warm, and inviting. All of the amenities were exactly as described. We enjoyed fishing in the area, shopping in Millerton, and the Drive-in theatre in Amenia. We would definitely come back again and recommend this home to others. The owner was very responsive and made everything easy. It was a very memorable family vacation!

Charming, short weekend stay

  • 5 of 5

We rented the house primarily as a place to sleep while attending a wedding in nearby Herondale Farms and wound up wishing we had time to just hang around the house and enjoy the property and views. It is wonderfully secluded; no other homes are in view and there. There are woods behind the house and a wonderful large meadow in front. It is the owner's country home and is very warm and personal. Some of the other wedding party stayed in modern houses around Upper Rhoda Pond but they were furnished as rentals and did not have the personal warmth of someone's home. The refrigerator was stocked with the request that we use what we need, replace what we have used up and throw out what was expired. Nice! The house was spotless; the internet did work and that is essential since cell phone reception is nil. There is also a landline for use and the owner considerately provides calling cards for long distance. It took a while to convince the owner to give me the exact location so I could be sure it was the property I viewed on satellite images but seeing how secluded it is I understand why the owner wanted to be sure we were serious renters. The only complaints, that were only from one of my adult sons, was that the beds are very soft, almost like feather beds. My wife loved that!

There are nice artisan stores in Millerton, 20 minutes SE on Hwy 8, a good grocery store, and a nearby Alpaca farm. There are a few stairs so it's not wheel chair friendly but I was on crutches and had no problem. It's a lovely, personal home for well behaved guests!
