About Ed Messmer

After vacationing in Saugatuck/Douglas, we wanted to enjoy the area as often as we built our own log home.

Our family and friends have so many great memories at lake front log cabin…the Lazy Bear Lodge. It's become an anchor for our family

We love to wake up early with a cup of coffee on the back porch watching the mist rise from the lake.

...Star gazing on the dock

...S'mores with the kids at the fire pit

...Fishing on the dock, floating around on Lake Goshorn, on the beach with the kids, or just getting hooked on a a good book.

Sure we have Cable and Wi-Fi, but most of the time we play, talk, and explore together…

We live out of state now, not able to get 'up to the cabin' as often as we want to be there. So, we decided to rent it to folks who appreciate the Lazy Bear way of life…getting away from it all, or jump into as many activities as you can handle.

Ed Messmer purchased this house in 2005

Why Ed Messmer chose West Central

A very special place…a real log cabin on Goshorn Lake. Cozy, inviting, yet upscale and well appointed. Uniquely combines the opportunity to get away from it all, or jump into as many activities as you can handle.

Our back yard is on the south shore of Lake Goshorn...a hop, skip and a jump-into-lake. The kids go crazy...swimming, floating, fishing, kayaking, making sand castles, or just hanging out at the dock.

We grill out most nights…walk to the ice cream shop...s'mores at the fire pit…relax with a wine on the dock.

Dune Buggy Rides…must do! You'll see them when you turn off the Blue Star Hwy on your way to our place. Explore the dunes, learn a lot, and see the ghost town the Dunes buried.

Saugatuck Dunes Park (4 mi). We love hiking the dune trails to secluded white beaches on Lk MI (.7 mi). Also a terrific place to run the forested dunes trains, then cool off in Lk MI. Might become you most memorable work out!

Step back into history, tour the recently restored Felt Mansion (borders Saugatuck Dunes Pk)…fascinating story about the home a Chicago industrialist built for his wife.

Tennis - courts at High School and downtown. Open tennis Tues & Thurs mornings at High School.

- Clearbrook (.8 Mi). Outstanding food at a good prices.

- Ravines Arnold Palmer Signature (4mi)

Oval Beach - one of the best public beaches on Lk MI

Salmon Fishing…Charters in town.

Bike paths

SAUGATUCK/DOUGLAS - voted #1 Weekend Get-Away Vacation by USA Today.

Bike, run, or walk to town (2 mi).

Arts & crafts, antiques, shopping, live music, dining, comedy club, river cruises, dancing, or singing at the piano bar.

- Mason Street Theatre…grant recipient from the National Endowment for the Performing Arts.

- Chain crank Ferry across the river

- Paddle Wheel River Cruises

- Churches, Post Office (say Hi to Donna), Drug Store

- Climb Mt Baldy

It's that Americana Feeling, ice cream parlor, fudge shop, quaint shops, Holiday parades, festivals, & fireworks.

What makes this house unique

Our water front Lazy Bear Lodge at Saugatuck offers the perfect blend of getting away from it all, or jumping into as many activities as you can handle.

Great get-a-way location

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time at Little Bear cottage and Saugatuck! We were a group of friends staying for a wedding. Goshorn Lake was beautiful and peaceful. We enjoyed quiet mornings on the lake and nighttime fun around the fire pit in back. And perfect location to easily enjoy Saugatck's downtown.

Lazy Bear Lodge Feels Like Home! (I would give it 100 stars if I could!)

  • 5 of 5

We planned a cabin fever couples weekend in March to the Saugatuck area and spent it at the Lazy Bear Lodge on Goshhorn Lake. When we arrived we had a very high expectation and yet we were truly blown away by the perfection of the cabin home itself and its location to town. The cabin itself is gorgeous and immaculately clean!! I cannot stress that enough. It is a knotty pine log home that is both beautifully appointed, very well maintained and unbelievably comfortable. It has all of the amenities you could want including sheets, blankets and towels which from our experiences in the past are not a given. The cabin sits on a nice piece of property on Goshhorn Lake with a great dock to sit on and relax with a glass of wine while you enjoy the view.. The cabin is spacious with 3 floors to enjoy, a kitchen with everything you need, 3 bedrooms upstairs and a large finished basement with sleeping options, a washer and dryer, and a TV with cable. The main floor area has a very large living room, dining area with very comfortable furniture as well as a field stone natural wood fireplace. It has 2.5 baths and the 2 full baths are large with either a sunken bathtub and a separate single shower or a double shower. The whole time we were there we felt we were tucked away in the woods yet we were just a few miles from everything. We really used our time to relax and enjoy the cabin but ate our dinners out. We would highly recommend The Everyday People Cafe in Douglas and Salt of the Earth in Fennville for dinner and The Farmhouse Deli in Douglas for breakfast or lunch. For beer lovers, we went to the Saugatuck Brewery as well.

Lazy Bear Lodge and its surroundings were perfect for us in every way. We would both visit again in a heartbeat and give it the highest recommendation to others.

Verrrrry impressed!!

  • 5 of 5

I arrived with 5 friends for a lazy weekend getaway. My friends and I had been looking forward to this all week and kept viewing the pics at work in anticipation. I loved the pic's but honestly I thought there was no way the cabin would live up to them. We were BLOWN AWAY with the cabin from the moment we arrived. It's actually even nicer than the photo's. And the place was actually even bigger than the pics. But still very warm and cozy vibe about the place. You can tell that the owners but a tremendous amount of time picking out just right nick knacks for the place (and I'm not even a big nick knack person). It felt a little bit like walking into a Norman Rockwell scene. It honestly surpassed our expectations! Roger & Kate

Great Vacation Rental!!

  • 5 of 5

The accommodations and location help make our vacation memorable. The house had a great layout with 3 upstairs bedrooms plus additional sleeping accommodations on the main and lower level. Whether relaxing, playing games, eating or sleeping the house suited our needs perfectly.

We had direct access to the beach and dock which made our kids happy. We were quite close to bike trails and Saugatuck which made the adults happy.

Idyllic Setting On the Lake

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at Lazy Bear Cottage and have to say it was the best family vacation we have ever have. We have been vacationing in Saugatuck every summer for the past five years and this was our first stay on Goshorn Lake. There was always something to do. We spent our days kayaking, fishing and floating on the lake. In the evenings we had family dinners on the BBQ, roasted marshmallows and even took a dip in the lake under the stars. The cabin was so perfect. Immaculate and perfectly appointed. We had a rainy day and it was just as nice to sit on the enclosed porch and enjoy a good book. I can't say enough good things about the cabin and it's owners, Linda and Ed. We felt so welcomed and could tell how much they love the cabin. Absolute perfection!

Lazy Bear Cabin Is a Great Place to Stay on Goshorn Lake

  • 5 of 5

My Family has been coming each summer to Goshorn Lake for our Family reunion since 1999. This July was the first year that we stayed at the Lazy Bear cabin in the Hidden Dunes subdivision. Linda and Ed Messmer have provided a beautiful place on our favorite Lake. In addition, Ed and the on-site Property Manager were also very prompt in addressing a minor maintenance matter that we encountered during our stay at the cabin. We highly recommend the Lazy Bear Cabin as the place to stay on Goshorn Lake, and we will be back next year. The Duffy Family
