About The Owner

Want you to have fun. Helpful information for a good trip overall in the cabin. The old time name of the town area where the cabin is was called Stickley. And, the cabin has branches-sticks-logs decorated according to name in history (Stickley, like sticks and this was an old time logging area) and add some fun to your stay. Not far from the cabin was the last stagecoach robbery (which is on Stagecoach Road), west of the cabin (past the waterfalls) and on the way to Lake Gogebic and another boat landing area. There are many stories and history of the area. And, we want you to create your own fun and personal history. Others will ask you where you had your vacation----and you can smile and say in the sticks (like the old saying meaning out in the woods, etc.). And, the cabin is actually decorated with real sticks-branches-wood. See websites on cabin. Look up Stickley Beaver Lodge Getaway. One website on the cabin has one more on fishing, rivers, lakes and more. Additional fun areas: Flowage Area by Marenisco, MI (west of the cabin), Presque Isle River, etc. area and National Forest Lakes. Ontonagon River History: The earliest archaeological evidence of human settlement within the watershed dates back to 2000 BC during the Late Archaic period. Prehistoric copper miners had mined the region for millennia before the first modern mines were developed. Kakabika Falls is secluded and drops 50 feet through a narrow gorge of black rock for a distance of 300 feet (many S curves and rocky cliff areas, pathway goes through beautiful woods with moss, Cedars and more, to a quiet area over pebbles, this is the waterfalls just west of the cabin off of 527). Kakabika Falls is just west of the cabin and is on the Ontonagon River. Ontonagon River, Middle Branch, this section of river provides popular canoeing and kayaking. MI Blue Ribbon Trout Stream. That branch is east of cabin.

Why The Owner chose Upper Peninsula

CISCO CHAIN: The Cisco Chain of Lakes is 15 lakes. Boundary Waters fishing regulations (use either Wisconsin or Michigan fishing licenses) on Mamie, West Bay and Big Lake. From the driveway of the cabin go down Cisco Lake Road to the Cisco Lake Boat Landing. Or, there is the Clearwater Lake Boat Landing that is also down Cisco Lake Road. Map of Cisco Chain in cabin and mapbook to use during your stay. CISCO BRANCH ONTONAGON RIVER: Part of the National Wild and Scenic River System. Just down the road to the West (could go for a walk) is the Cisco Branch of the Ontonagon River. The Cisco Branch of the Ontonagon River is the branch that comes from the Cisco Chain of Lakes, Cisco Lake. The Cisco Branch of the Ontonagon River has a variety of terrain areas where the river quiets or the river goes over rocks making tranquil sounds or the Kakabika waterfall, etc. Some fishing done on part of it. Some parts of the Ontonagon River and its branches are good for canoeing and kayaking. Two Mile Creek, which supports native brook trout drains into the Cisco Branch of the Ontonagon River. Two Mile Creek, which supports native brook trout drains into the Cisco Branch of the Ontonagon River. Restoration Project of the Historic Lake Sturgeon in the Ontonagon River. River has variety of branches including West Branch, Middle Branch, etc. BEATONS LAKE: Beatons Lake is just north of the cabin (circle driveway of the cabin goes out on Beatons Lake Road; see mapbooks for access points). Variety of types of trout, etc. Approximately a 330 acre lake. TWO MILE CREEK: Come explore and use the cabin as your base for adventures. Two Mile Creek, which supports native brook trout.LAKE GOGEBIC: Lake Gogebic (the largest lake in Michigan) is west of the cabin. Look for Stagecoach Road (last stagecoach robbery information with Black Bart history) and there is a boat landing on the southern side of Lake Gogebic. Variety of fish including Walleye, Jumbo Perch and more. Tournaments.

What makes this cabin unique

This cabin is in The Historic Stickley Area. Logging, cabins, historic history of business owners from a long time ago, area(s) which President Roosevelt hunted, fished, etc., mob stories, and more. Sylvania Natural Wilderness Area has many stories, books, etc. about the area also. This area is toward town (east of the cabin).

Stickley (GNIS FID: 1621776) is a populated place located within the Township of Watersmeet, a minor civil division (MCD) of Gogebic County.

The elevation of Stickley is 1,634 feet. Stickley appears on the Thayer U.S. Geological Survey Map. Gogebic County is in the Central Time Zone (UTC -6 hours). Many areas in some states are not this high.

Just northeast approximately of the cabin was the area of "Stickley Lodge" the wilderness retreat for Albert Stickley of Grand Rapids, Michigan{Stickley Brothers Company/Quaint Furniture} brother of Gustav Stickley. Described as palatial, it had eight bedrooms and a huge $30,000.00 pipe organ. Albert used the location to oversee his lumber holdings. After his death lodge was turned into a resort "to a few who desire refinement and the companionship of cultured guests." Burned in the 40s.

At one time property had its own railroad spur. With a big "S" on the hillside marking his private train stop, Mr Stickley could be dropped off at the covered shelter with steps leading up the hill to the lodge. You can still make out the grading for the tracks thru the swamp that passes Stickley Lake/Turtle Lake. You can enjoy the area of some of the great men and women that passed through this area many years ago. Visit the area museum (one in Land O'Lakes), walk through the National Forest, and enjoy the adventures.

Rogers Bar has old murials behind the bar and antique history of their own. Relaxing smell of wood heat. Variety of drinks, food, snacks, games, snowmobile stickers and maps, stories of adventures, bags of ice, and more. Cabin is on acreage with National Forest behind cabin and in area.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Cozy cabin rental

  • 5 of 5

Very satisfied with our stay, the cabin was well accommodated for 13 guests. Wood burning stove kept us very warm from the cold temperatures this trip. Bedrooms were well equipped with beds for sleeping. The location of the cabin was perfect for snowmobiling with trail number 2 right down the road as well as rogers bar located across from the cabin. The driveway was also fantastic for unloading snowmobiles and parking them. Interior of cabin is also very interesting with maps and newspaper articles fun for reading. Owners are also very courteous and kept in touch through email, letting me know weather conditions and if we wanted to extend our stay. overall stay was excellent, would definitely stay again next winter.

We care about our guests. Want you to have fun. Helpful information for a good trip overall in the cabin. The cabin has had much tender loving care.

History - In the early 1900's a group of 6 prominent mining and steel industrialists purchased large tracts of land just west of Watersmeet and formed the Sylvania Club. These men, who had made their fortunes exploiting the environment, treasured and preserved Sylvania's forests, lakes and wildlife for the intangible wealth of its pristine qualities. Sylvania was unique and rare in that it had escaped the era of logging and the wave of fires that impacted most of the area around it. Club membership changed over the years and the Forest Service purchased the tract of land in 1967 from P.C. Christainson, the last surviving owner, and from the estate of Lawrence Fisher. For the first time, Sylvania was open to the public. All buildings were removed and trails that once accommodated carriages and motor vehicles now serve as hiking trails and portages between lakes.

**This is the area that many movie stars use to come to and President Roosevelt. And, there are many mobster stories in the area (between the ones from Wisconsin and then also Michigan as this is the border area.
