This large historical home is actual 2 houses in one. Built in the 1830's by Colman Hinkley it is based on the old farmhouse model in which bedrooms above the kitchen are completely separated from the upstairs bedrooms of the main house. This allows for creative sleeping arrangements to accommodate the needs of large groups and multiple generations.
The quiet rural setting, with private water access and the nearby ferry makes this an ideal location for water enthusiasts, bird watchers and fitness fanatics. Swimming, running, biking, and canoeing are all easily accessible.
The large kitchen has a walk out patio door to the deck and private path to a sheltered bay for swimming, bonfires, sunsets and wildlife. This quiet and safe backyard with shade and fruit trees makes this property a practical choice for families with young children.
I grew up nearby in the large stone house you pass before drive down onto the ferry dock. i attended high school in Kingston and have a degree in geology from Queen's University. Instead of following a career as a geologist however, I became a ferry captain and continued on in the 200 year old family business of running Horne's Ferry. Water activities have always been my favourite and now with our newly created Wolfe Island Boat Club, 4-man shell rowing has taken front and centre for me as the sport of choice.
Bruce Horne purchased this house in 1830
Since this house was built the early 1800's it has always been in our family and I am excited to be able to offer this newly renovated home to others as a doorstep to all the attractions, activities and possibilities of Wolfe Island and the Thousand Islands region.
From the elegant staircase and formal dining room, to the floor-to -ceiling windows with views of ocean liners plying the St Lawrence Seaway this home is a very gracious and practical setting for any event be it family get-togethers or workshops and retreats.
my family loved this home so much we were talking about what a great summer home this would be. The beautiful back yard and the walk to the water was wonderful. We love old homes and this one was just fantastic. The owners were very nice and pleasant to work with. Wolfe Island is so quaint. We went across on the ferry to Kingston and saw that beautiful city. We would rent this house again we loved it so much. We had turkeys in the trees one night and one morning I looked out the window and saw a 6 point buck in the yard just eating the grass. It is so quiet and peaceful there. If you are looking for a great place to stay this is it.
This large, historical home overlooks the main shipping channel of the St Lawrence Seaway, and is only a 5 minute walk away from a privately run ferry that runs between Wolfe Island and Cape Vincent, New York. Or arrive via Canada on a free ferry that runs from downtown Kingston, Ontario to Marysville, Wolfe Island.
The village of Marysville offers bike rentals, kayak and sailing rentals, a coffee shop, groceries, liquor and a waterfront restaurant.
The village of Cape Vincent NY offers restaurants, bar, groceries, tennis courts and beautiful well maintained roads for cycling, all within easy walking distance of your front door.
Swim in the big waves of Lake Ontario across the road from the front porch, or follow a short private path from the backyard to Button Bay, a sheltered area ideal for swimming, fishing, canoeing, evening camp fires etc. Bald eagles, ospreys, trumpet swans and snowy owls are just a few of the many birds that populate this international bird area, and all are common visitors to the bay.
A paddle boat and volleyball net are available for your use.
Big Sandy Bay with its beautiful beach and sand dunes and the Riverview Golf Course are both short drives away.
