Overview

About the property

4 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 14

Family owned Classic Cottage in the Thousand Islands near Clayton New York. It is accessible only by boat. Built in 1912 and lovingly maintained, the cottage site on the north side of Round Island, facing the shipping channel. Watching big ships from all over the world pass by is a fun pastime. The dock has deep water access and a protected boat slip. There is plenty of room for swimming, lounging, dining (including a refrigerator), fishing and water-sports (canoe/kayaks available).

The cottage is up stairs above dock level and has spectacular views of the river and wonderful sunsets. The cottage has 5 double beds, a bunk twin bed set in 4 bedrooms and a fold out couch in the living room. The main floor is open with easy flow between the kitchen, dining and living rooms. There are also 2 porches. The upriver porch is the depth of the house and screened in allowing for dining, rocking chairs, and conversation. There is an outdoor shower as well as 2 bathrooms inside. The kitchen is fully furnished for easy cooking and plenty of place settings for gatherings. There is both a gas grill and charcoal grill available

The yard is grassy and has room for volleyball and other games. There are walking trails around the island, a post office and a public tennis. The island is the former site of the Frontenac Hotel. The post office has historical information and you can still find the ruins of the foundation of the old hotel as you explore.

Boat rentals are available for guests at Clayton Marina in nearby Clayton.

Nearby all of the attractions of the 1000 Islands are available. In Clayton, guests can visit the Antique Boat Museum, Clayton Boat Tours, local vineyards, Clayton Opera House, and local shopping.

The cottage was completely repainted this fall. More pictures will be available in the spring!

About Martien Mulder and Susan Yates-Mulder

The Mulder family has a long history with the Thousand Islands. Cindy Mulder was related to the owners of the Hutchinson Boat Works in Alexandria Bay. Hutchinson Boats are beautiful examples of Antique Wooden Boats from the heyday of wood boat building. Mart and Cindy honeymooned in the 1000 Islands and they purchased the cottage because of their love of the river in 1987. When they viewed the cottage for the first time Martien stopped at the top of the stairs from the dock. He looked out over amazing river view and said 'I don't care what the cottage looks like, this is the place!' Fortunately the cottage was lovely also and it is the favorite family vacation spot. Martien loves all things related to boats and takes great pride in the condition of the waterfront. After becoming a widower Martien remarried Susan in 2009. Together they made a wooden double kayak which you can see on the dock. We hope your family loves our 'Little Slice of Heaven' as much as we do.

What makes this cottage unique

Once you park your car and take your boat to the island, you realize that you have left the hustle and bustle of your everyday life on shore. The river is a place to relax and recharge yourself. Your day can flow with the pace of the sun and the water. River time is depicted as a clock with no hands! The breezes from Lake Ontario will cool even the hottest summer day. Play on the water during the day and then enjoy a good book in the evening. There is plenty to do nearby, but the lure of the island is strong also.

Stunning sunsets, fun watching the tankers, and plenty of room for the entire family

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we have stayed here and it was just as enjoyable. It truly is a little piece of heaven. The beloved family home is well-maintained (sturdy new stairs to the dock, and several of the rocking chairs were recaned with an adorable red/blue pattern) and very comfortable. Round Island is quiet and peaceful, yet close enough to Clayton or A-bay that restaurants or museums (e.g., antique boat museum and the Clayton museum) are accessible by boat. A great place to bring the family on vacation on the water!

Wonderful summer vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

"A Little Piece Of Heaven" was exactly as it states! Everything about our vacation to the Thousand Islands was perfect. The cottage was in tip top shape and ready for guests to enjoy the island/river life. This is a great spot for anyone looking to get away and enjoy the company of family and friends.

This cottage has everything you need to have a great vacation. The house is spacious with lots of screened in areas to relax. The swimming is great and the views of the river, islands, passing ships and other boats are enjoyable also. We will be back!

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely river house. We loved the long screened in porch with great views of the river and the channel and spent most of our indoor time there, including meals on the long dining table. All the bedrooms have great cross ventilation and comfortable beds. There are paths on the island for walking and great swimming off the dock. An overall terrific river experience!

a perfectly charming and comfortable family home

  • 5 of 5

This is truly a little piece of heaven! We had a wonderful family vacation here August 2016. Nearly every spot in the house had a beautiful view and we enjoyed having dinner out on the screened-in porch at sunset. Swimming and fishing off the dock were a daily event and the boat slip easily accommodated our boat and 2 jetskis. We were nervous about staying on an island, but had no issues. Round Island is close to the mainland and offers a great walking path around the island (check out the post office), and the bottled water provided was more than sufficient. The only very minor quibble might be about the number of adults/sleeping spots. I believe the listing said 14, but that would require having 2 people on each bunk -- which is a stretch. Two rooms have a double bed, one room has two doubles, and what we used as the kids room had a double bed, 1 set of bunk beds, and a crib. We had packed an air mattress and the kids camped out in a tent one night so it wasn't an issue -- but just an fyi. The outdoor shower was a big hit. Chris, the local contact was a tremendous help. Overall a wonderful get away that I highly recommend!

Our stay was amazing due to the comfort of this beautiful home. Every attention to detail was paid so all we needed to bring was our food. The beds were comfy, the sitting areas plentiful and the views...ahhh, the views.
