Soak up all of the amazing culture of the Bay Area- museums, restaurants, hiking and come home to a peaceful outdoorsy retreat. Walk to thriving neighborhoods of Temescal, Rockridge, and Piedmont Ave in minutes, and enjoy farmer's markets, movie theatre, yoga studios, world class restaurants, bakeries, shops. See why Oakland was named one of the top 10 US Cities to live in by the NY times last year. Walk to transit to San Francisco at either Rockridge or MacArthur Bart stations. Take advantage of the hip downtown Oakland Arts and Restaurant Scene. When its time to relax, enjoy our urban oasis- lovely deck for entertaining right off the kitchen and lush, professionally landscaped garden to read or relax in.

We are a family of four who love to travel. We have exchanged our home before but now prefer VRBO. House has books, toys, games, and video games aimed at kids aged 8 - 15. We are happy to provide recommendations about the best local activities for families.

Our house has 4 comfortable bedrooms upstairs. The spacious, sunny master bedroom has a queen bed. The sunny guest room has a King bed. There are two bedrooms with single beds. One of the rooms is bigger and can have a second twin bed added. The second twin bed room is a cosy room with casement windows overlooking the garden. Upstairs features a great master bath, with huge shower and separate soaking tub.

You will love relaxing in our big living room which has a robust gas fireplace that makes the room toasty in the colder months. Our dining room seats 8-10 comfortably and leads into our eat in kitchen. The kitchen has a huge island with stools which allow your guests to hang out comfortably while you cook. There is a breakfast table with built in seating surrounded by huge windows which look out to the garden. The deck is located right outside the kitchen door, which makes grilling and entertaining outdoor a breeze. On the deck is French Fermob furniture for meals in the sun. Also on the ground floor, a home office and second bathroom with shower.

We are both former professional cooks, and our kitchen is equipped with a professional range- 6 gas burners and electric convection oven. Global knives, kitchen aid mixer, cuisinart and double toaster. We love to entertain as well so you will find everything you need to dine in style- tasteful champagne and wine glasses, fiesta ware service for 10, and endless platters, pitchers and serving equipment.

About Elizabeth Norris

We are an active family of 4. Parents are a soccer coach/carpenter and antiques dealer/local shop owner. We love museums, sports, gardening, hiking and cooking and we take full advantage of everything our neighborhood and surrounding areas have to offer and are eager to share tips about things to do in our amazing slice of Northern California.

Elizabeth Norris purchased this house in 2005

Why Elizabeth Norris chose Rockridge

We chose this house for a couple of reasons. The rooms are quite large, with tall ceilings and big windows which let in a lot of light. The house is over 100 years old, and when we bought it, was in disrepair. We enjoy carpentry, decorating and gardening and this house needed all of those things. We lovingly restored the house, upgrading everything- electrical, plumbing, heating and added a brand new kitchen, two new bathrooms and a deck. All of our work was done with with an eye to the home's architectural integrity.

What makes this house unique

We love the sun! Our backyard is private, with a lovely patch of lawn to stretch out on, a hammock for naps, and a little veggie garden. Our house has huge windows which let the sun into every room. A gas fireplace heats the living room and makes it a comfortable place to relax . The master bedroom is huge, with a lovely bay window view from the master bed.

Perfect vacation home in Bay Area

  • 5 of 5

Our family came from New York, Houston and the bay area to celebrate Thanksgiving together for five nights. We could not have been happier. The house is beautiful, the art work sublime, the furnishings so tasteful; the spaciousness gave as sense of privacy and togetherness; the very well appointed kitchen allowed all of us to be cooking and baking together without feeling cramped. Oh, the dinner, oh the dinner. Neighborhood offered us everything we wanted. Elizabeth was a perfect hostess. We felt right at home. The two cats were precious- one slept with us- I assume the other roamed. Elizabeth's instructions and suggestions were impeccable and sooo helpful. We have no second thoughts about re-booking. Well- beyond our expectations!! Thank you.

The house and large backyard were exactly what our family needed for our stay.

  • 5 of 5

House was definitely set up as a family home. The four bedrooms gave us lots of room to relax. We cooked a lot in the gorgeous kitchen and ate outside when it was sunny.

The family room was comfy and we relaxed watching movies or Olympics.

We walked or biked to great restaurants and fun shops everyday. I even joined a fitness studio when I was visiting and was able to walk there in 4 minutes for their 6:30am classes. We spent many visits down at Bluebottle coffee which is down the hill.

We had great communication with the owners and they were able to reply to our questions very quickly. We visited relatives in Walnut Creek often and the drive was only 18 minutes as access to the 24 is phenomenal off of Broadway. Lower Rockridge is highly walkable, safe and pretty. Lots to see on walks including fairy houses, beautiful gardens, and great architecture. Thanks!

Beautiful home, great location

  • 5 of 5

This is a really beautiful home and it was perfect for our vacation/family reunion. The kitchen was amazing and we were able to enjoy big family meals at the large dining room table and also outside in the yard (which was peaceful and lovely). The location of this home was ideal, with walking access to shops and restaurants in Oakland, as well as easy access to San Francisco.

Perfect home away from home for family reunion

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect house for our family reunion, with beds for seven, plus ample room for another five relatives in the area stopping in for daily visits and meals. There's plenty of rooms for socializing, whether for a sit down meal at the dining table, some quiet reading time in the separate living room, sun and a game of cards on the back porch deck, or just hanging out in the amazing kitchen to chat while cooking. Everyone remarked about the relaxed and spacious setting.

There's plenty of local shops and restaurants a short walk from the house, with Berkeley and other areas just a short car trip away. We needed to do some grocery shopping while there, and I was pleasantly surprised to find how close we were to Berkeley Bowl and some other foodie destinations. For those who enjoy walking, we took the advice provided by the owners to head up through the local cemetery for an amazing hill-top view of the surrounding Bay Area. Arguably one of the best promontory views of the San Francisco - Oakland area we've experienced.

There was plenty of parking on the street right out in front, and the neighborhood was quiet, so we all slept restfully. Don't let the retrained street view picture of this house fool you. If you enjoying staying city close, and love the solid feel and spaciousness of elegantly refurbished older city homes, this one's a gem.

Thanks for a memorable stay with our family!

Our house is ideally located for urban adventures- we are walking distance from the culturally rich neighborhoods of Rockridge, Piedmont Avenue and Temescal which all feature great restaurants, shops and cafes, so we are urban, but our backyard is a green oasis with a big garden where you will feel like you are in the country. Neighborhood boasts phenomenal weather year round. Great hiking in the Oakland and Berkeley Hills very close by as well as easy access to transit- take BART into San Francisco for museums and sightseeing, or drive in to the city in less than 30 minutes.
