We love to entertain as well so you will find everything you need to dine in style- tasteful champagne and wine glasses, fiesta ware service for 10, and endless platters, pitchers and service equipment.
We are an active family of 4, Parents are a soccer coach/carpenter and antiques dealer/local shop owner. We love museums, sports, gardening, hiking and cooking and we take full advantage of everything our neighborhood and surrounding areas have to offer and are eager to share tips about things to do in our amazing slice of Northern California.
Elizabeth Norris purchased this house in 2005
We chose this house for a couple of reasons. The rooms are quite large, with tall ceilings and big windows which let in a lot of light. The house is over 100 years old, and when we bought it, was in disrepair. We enjoy carpentry, decorating and gardening and this house needed all of those things. We lovingly restored the house, upgrading everything- electrical, plumbing, heating and added a brand new kitchen, two new bathrooms and a deck. All of our work was done with with an eye to the home's architectural integrity.
We love the sun! Our backyard is private, with a lovely patch of lawn to stretch out on, a hammock for naps, and a little veggie garden. Our ouse has huge windows which let the sun into every room. A gas fireplace heats the living room and makes it a comfortable place to relax . The master bedroom is huge, with a lovely bay window view from the master bed.
Our family came from New York, Houston and the bay area to celebrate Thanksgiving together for five nights. We could not have been happier. The house is beautiful, the art work sublime, the furnishings so tasteful; the spaciousness gave as sense of privacy and togetherness; the very well appointed kitchen allowed all of us to be cooking and baking together without feeling cramped. Oh, the dinner, oh the dinner. Neighborhood offered us everything we wanted. Elizabeth was a perfect hostess. We felt right at home. The two cats were precious- one slept with us- I assume the other roamed. Elizabeth's instructions and suggestions were impeccable and sooo helpful. We have no second thoughts about re-booking. Well- beyond our expectations!! Thank you.
House was definitely set up as a family home. The four bedrooms gave us lots of room to relax. We cooked a lot in the gorgeous kitchen and ate outside when it was sunny.
The family room was comfy and we relaxed watching movies or Olympics.
We walked or biked to great restaurants and fun shops everyday. I even joined a fitness studio when I was visiting and was able to walk there in 4 minutes for their 6:30am classes. We spent many visits down at Bluebottle coffee which is down the hill.
We had great communication with the owners and they were able to reply to our questions very quickly. We visited relatives in Walnut Creek often and the drive was only 18 minutes as access to the 24 is phenomenal off of Broadway. Lower Rockridge is highly walkable, safe and pretty. Lots to see on walks including fairy houses, beautiful gardens, and great architecture. Thanks!
This is a really beautiful home and it was perfect for our vacation/family reunion. The kitchen was amazing and we were able to enjoy big family meals at the large dining room table and also outside in the yard (which was peaceful and lovely). The location of this home was ideal, with walking access to shops and restaurants in Oakland, as well as easy access to San Francisco.
This was the perfect house for our family reunion, with beds for seven, plus ample room for another five relatives in the area stopping in for daily visits and meals. There's plenty of rooms for socializing, whether for a sit down meal at the dining table, some quiet reading time in the separate living room, sun and a game of cards on the back porch deck, or just hanging out in the amazing kitchen to chat while cooking. Everyone remarked about the relaxed and spacious setting.
There's plenty of local shops and restaurants a short walk from the house, with Berkeley and other areas just a short car trip away. We needed to do some grocery shopping while there, and I was pleasantly surprised to find how close we were to Berkeley Bowl and some other foodie destinations. For those who enjoy walking, we took the advice provided by the owners to head up through the local cemetery for an amazing hill-top view of the surrounding Bay Area. Arguably one of the best promontory views of the San Francisco - Oakland area we've experienced.
There was plenty of parking on the street right out in front, and the neighborhood was quiet, so we all slept restfully. Don't let the retrained street view picture of this house fool you. If you enjoying staying city close, and love the solid feel and spaciousness of elegantly refurbished older city homes, this one's a gem.
Thanks for a memorable stay with our family!
Our house is ideally located for urban adventures- we are walking distance from the culturally rich neighborhoods of Rockridge, Piedmont Avenue and Temescal's great restaurants, shops , cafes, so we are urban, but our backyard is a green oasis with a big garden where you will feel like you are in the country. Neighborhood boasts phenomenal weather year round. Great hiking in the Oakland and Berkeley Hills very close by as well as easy access to transit- take BART into San Francisco for museums and sightseeing, or drive in to the city in less than 30 minutes.
