****ABOUT THE HOME****
Our home was custom built by us in 2006. The rental apartment is the full top floor (1200sq. ft.). It has one good sized bedroom, one (to die for) bathroom (according to guests), an open living, kitchen and dining floor plan and an outside deck to the West of the house with a view to the West and South.
****WHEELCHAIR FRIENDLY BUT NOT ADA****
While our home is not handicapped accessible by ADA Guidelines, all doorways and the kitchen cabinet to cabinet clearance is 36 inches. If you need a wheelchair for general mobility but can stand to move to a commode and to wash up at the sink, you will be able to navigate the home. The shower in the bathroom has no curb. It has a slightly raised arch to keep water in the pan area but is easy to navigate for persons who cannot lift feet very high off the floor.
The home is heated with a radiant floor heat system throughout with hardwood floors in the living area.
The bathroom is custom tiled and has custom Homer beach rock work on the shower floor, across the lavatory vanity, and around the jet tub. We cut the large tiles to 'marry' with the edges of the rock work. It is really quite lovely.
The rocks are great for massaging your tired feet while you shower after a day of hiking, fishing and beach-combing! Or mayhap... a soak in the jet tub while taking in the view is just the thing to sooth a vacationing soul?
There is a queen sized memory foam bed in the bedroom and a large picture window with a view of the mountains and bay.
A queen hide-a-bed in the living room provides sleeping accommodations for 2 additional guests.
An additional 2 picture windows and a large window to the West provide a panoramic view from the living area.
I could go on and on but they only allow a certain number of words here and in the interest of time and not being too chatty I'll just say... really, you just have to experience it to appreciate it. We believe you will be very pleased indeed!
About Those Pesky Inn Keepers.. and Guest Access to Property
We will make every effort to meet you in person when you arrive. Just in case we cannot be there to meet you or if you arrive after 6 PM, you will be provided with a combination for the door lock. These combinations are changed between every guest stay for your protection.
**** Your Privacy is Our Policy ****
We operate on the philosophy that you are coming to Alaska to relax and get away. To that end we try and be as unobtrusive as possible once you are checked in.
You have a private entry by way of the deck and the entire top floor is yours. Our home is on 5 acres at the very end of the street and you are welcome to go anywhere on the outside grounds you wish.
**** Things To Do In The Yard ****
*We hope to install a fire pit this summer and you are welcome to join us whenever we have a fire lit. Fires are always subject to any burn ban in effect at the time.
*We will also begin working on a system of short trails this summer and hope to have some of them them completed for the 2017 season.
*We are designing a few outside areas for horseshoes, a sand box area for the little ones, and possibly a couple small "Celtic Games" areas where you can practice boulder tossing and such. It is a work in progress and plans are always evolving and subject to change.
*We are working on flower gardens with a nice assortment of perennials and many indigenous berries, ferns and other flora.
*We have a small vegetable garden and as the veggies come to harvest time we will share what we have with our guests.
**** Where We Will Be ****
We do live in the downstairs suite, and are available whenever we are on the property should you need anything.
You will undoubtedly see one or both of us out in the yard from time to time doing chores, yard work, etc. If you do see us out and about in the yard please do come and say hi, and maybe have a cup of coffee a bit of tea.
****Studio TEN Cabin**** A Working Fused Glass Art Studio
I hope you will come and visit me (Tanya) in my Studio anytime I am in. It is located just below the house. Just knock before entering as I work with large sheets of glass and surprises that startle can lead to injury.
The neighborhood is made up of a mix of retired couples and families with children from 2 years old to early teens. There is a mix of year-round and summer only (snow birds) residents on our street.
We are at the end of Newell Court. The road dead ends at our place so there is no through traffic past our house.
The property is treed with a mixture of white, black and blue spruce and alders. Blueberries, currants, high bush cranberries, lowbush cranberries, and watermelon berries can all be found in late August and September if growing conditions are just right.
On clear days from our deck and top floor of the house you can see 4 glaciers, nearly the entire bay. You can even see the spit in the distance. On really clear days you can see to the inlet and even see 2 of the volcanoes across the inlet.
When you're ready to book, here are some tips to keep in mind.

About the artist
My name is Tanya Norvell and I love working with glass. The type of glass work I do is know in the industry as “Warm Glass”. This means it is coked in a kiln to a maximum temp of approximately 1600 degrees F. Subsequent firings are used to further the design and or slump or drape some items into plates, bowls, and 3 dimensional art pieces.
Fired pieces scan also be “cold worked” after firing with diamond pads, lap sanders belt sander, sand blasters, and a number of other cold working tools.
This type of glass work can use many different techniques and I love exploring all the different effects that can be had from the myriad possibilities.
The Main Products I use:
I use sheet glass, frits ( crushed glass of various sizes), powders ( finely ground glass), rods (thick round “sticks” of glass), Stringers (thin round “sticks” of glass and confetti ( very thin, flat bits of glass) all from Bullseye Glass Factory in Portland, Oregon.
I also use products from a company called Unique Glass Colors. These are very finely ground glass powders that are mixed with specialty mediums to achieve a variety effects.
There are many other things I use including the fiber paper that is used for creating Bas Relief ( KilnCarved) creations.
I have a large selection of cold working tools, cutters, diamond pads, bead making (torch work) tools, that I use in the creation of my art.
About the class
Each class is between 3 and 4 hours long. Actual time will depend on how long it takes the students to come up with 2 designs, make the tracing, cut the fiber paper, glue, clean their glass, etc. Then there are always questions to be answered, coffee to drink, visiting to be had.
The class will begin at 9:30AM with a quick “tour’ of my mini gallery where you can see a number of different projects ranging from “in-process” to “completed”. You are welcome to ask any questions you want about the pieces, techniques, types of glasses used… anything you want.
Then I will give you a quick overview of glasses used in fusing, what is meant by certain terminologies, and the basic process we (and your glass) will go through to arrive at your final art piece.
What I Provide:
Knowledge, excitement and encouragement ;-)
Pre-Fired Glass Blanks (One transparent and one opaque)
N-95 Disposable Face Mask
Engraver for signing your pieces when done
Kiln time to fire the projects
Cleaning of final project after firing
Then the fun begins!
I have a few stained glass pattern designs that you can use if you prefer a ready made design.
If you prefer to make your own design, I will have plenty of paper for you to run through to arrive at your design destination. Once you have decided your design is as you like it, you will cut the design out with a craft knife.
Once this is done you will cut the design out of the fiber paper and lay-up the design on the base piece.
You will the wash your glass blank and place it on the form you have made.
Then the waiting begins ;-)
Once all projects are designed the fiber paper forms will be pre-fired to 1290 degrees. This is done to burn off any binders in the the paper that can cause a reaction on the surface of glass called devitrification.
The kiln will be brought back to room temperature and your art pieces will be fired to approximately 1540 degrees then ramped down through a series of steps designed to minimized shock and stress in the glass. This firing sequence takes approximately 18-1/2 hours.
Then I will remove the items from the kiln, clean them and they are ready for you to pick up and take home to enjoy for years to come!
Call or email me for availability and fees.
Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: In 1969 when I was 12 my family moved to Anchorage, Alaska. I attended Junior High at Clark Middle School and High School at both East Anchorage High and Dimond Mears High. In late 1972 my life took me back to the lower 48. Our son was born in 1974 and together he and I have lived in 7 of the lower 48 states and Germany. In 1992 we received an offer to come to Homer, Alaska and buy a local plumbing and heating sales and service business. We worked the business until 1995 when we finalized the purchase of Orca Specialties Inc. We have since closed the retail store and Rick ( my husband and total better half) continues the service side to this day. He also helps out with things needing done around the vacation property. About 10 years ago I became involved with the art of fusing glass and opened Studio TEN. Through the course of constructing our home, my studio became a storage building and my glass work went into stasis. The Studio is now up and running. While the building itself is in a constant state of flux, I am VERY excited about a number of new glass projects I am working on. Beginning the spring of 2017 I will be offering one on one classes that you can book during a stay of 3 nights or more.
Why the Owner Chose Fritz Creek, AK, USA:
My (Tanya) family moved to Alaska in 1969. Alaska is an curious place, either you love it or you don't. Very few people have a *take it or leave it* attitude about our state. For me it was instant love. Wherever my life took me through the years, I always viewed Alaska as my home. My husband, son and I moved back to Alaska in 1992. We were given the opportunity to work for a local company which we ended up buying in 1995. After a few years, we decided we wanted a place with a little room to roam so we began looking for acreage. This search took us to the Fritz Creek area just outside of Homer. We ended up buying a lot close to Greer Road and built a lovely 3 story home. For medical reasons we could not stay in the 3 story house. We liked the area so much that we made an offer on the last lot on the road, and the rest is history. We had the shell of the house built by a local contractor. With the help of Rick's brother who took a 3 week vacation and came and helped with the 14 foot vaulted tongue and groove ceilings and some separation walls and our friend Joseph who helped with rough-in carpentry, the laying of nearly 1100 square feet of 3/4-inch purple heart hardwood flooring as well as the vaulted ceiling, the house was done to the finish stage. We then did all of the finish work ourselves(with the exception of a bit of the wall texture, (by Joseph) ;-). We cut and set all of tile in in the bathroom, set the custom rock work on the shower floor, the counter tops and around the jet tub. While Rick's sister (Kathy) was up for a visit, she helped me assemble the kitchen cabinets and we got them set. Then I custom stained and sealed all of the woodwork including the T&G back splash in the kitchen. Our home was built with loving care by ourselves with help from our family and friends. We believe that love remains in the house to this day and we would love to share our house that holds so many memories with our vacationing guests.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
Our house is heated with radiant floor heat throughout. Large picture windows in the bedroom and living room and dining area allow maximum enjoyment of the panoramic view of Kachemak Bay. The mountain range and glaciers are sure to delight. Even the bathroom jet tub has window over looking the treed side yard with a view to one of the glaciers. While not ADA compliant, it is wheelchair and walker friendly. The entry is accessed by a ramp and all doorways and kitchen walkways are at least 36-inches wide. The shower in the bathroom does not have a curb. It has a gentle rise of beach rock that is easy to step into. The entry ramp brings you to the private deck where there is a view to the West and the South. A BBQ and deck furniture are perfect for morning coffee or a casual dinner. Are you going fishing? The BBQ is perfect for that fresh caught fish! When I picked the colors for the interior paint I drew from the colors of nature. Soft greens, and the purples and reds of summer berries, lupine and wild geraniums. We are in the process of installing a fire pit in the lower yard and are beginning a series of trails this summer which we hope to have completed by the summer of 2017. BOOK A FUSED GLASS CLASS WHEN YOU STAY 3 OR MORE NIGHTS (extra fees apply) I am a fused glass artist and my studio is located on the lower portion of the property. You are welcome in the studio any time I am in. Beginning the summer of 2017 I will be offering personal one on one classes in fused glass and you will be able to schedule classes when you make your reservation so long as there is space available. You will get to learn a little about the art, make your own piece of glass art and have a memento of your stay to take home with you! Fused glass is a multi day process so classes are only available for stays of at least 3 nights. Simply let me know if you would like a class and I will get you the information.
