Not what we thought it would be

  • 2 of 5

On the whole, I would say this property was adequate for our needs. It was reasonably clean and comfortable; but, for the price we paid for a weekend, it turned out to be less than expected. We had 12 adults and 8 children, and there was room for all. One adult with has mobility challenges. The 44 fairly steep stairsteps to get down to the boat dock kept him from being able to go down and cast a line in the water. We were hoping for a lawn that gently sloped to the water. This place does not have such a lawn. It is also not wheelchair accessible from outside. There is a high step to get into the house from the garage, and two steps to get to the front door. The two shared bathrooms cannot accommodate a wheelchair - too cramped and narrow. No handgrips for the tubs.

There is no beach area on the property - only boat docks. Not particularly young child friendly.

Two bedrooms and family room in basement, but no bath, and no egress windows in case of emergency. There are windows, but they are high up and quite small for an adult to get through.

We were there at the end of the summer season, and had the unfortunate experience of the septic tank backing up, on a Saturday morning. We reached the rental agent, and she had the issue remedied fairly quickly - even came to clean up the mess so we would not have to cut short our stay.

On the whole, I'd say it was adequate for our needs, though, for the price, it did not meet our expectations. But we didn't let that spoil our enjoyment of the area and the time we were able to spend on the water. It just tells us not to rely on photos and glowing descriptions - or disparaging reviews. . . just take the time to, if possible, check it out in person before committing to renting.

Owner's Response: We thank these guest for there stay. Unfortunately, the weather was exceptionally rainy before and during their stay. In review of the initial inquiry the desire for a gently sloping lawn, beach area and wheelchair accessibility to the lake were not indicated. The open plan of the house with its large living room, spacious dining room, large L shaped screened porch and large kitchen provide room for a wheelchair to access these areas easily. The main floor bedroom with queen bed and adjacent bath are accessible depending on the level of disability, which unfortunately was not indicated. The guests did experience a septic issue on the second day of their stay, which was NOT due to the septic tank being full, but was something that was not due to any maintenance negligence or could not have been anticipated by the owner or Property Manager. It was immediately addressed by a Septic Professional and the Property Manager was onsite to ensure that everything was clean, sanitized and back in working order within a short period of time. The renter was compensated for the inconvenience. The west end of Green Lake is a very nice area for children with its shallow sandy bottom waters. We have ladders on the pier for the children and adults to enter the water. The Property Manager stopped on the morning after their arrival to ask how everything was and was told everything was good! It is very important to read the descriptions of properties, view the photos and communicate what you are looking for in detail during the inquiry process. This is a very nice property on approximately 2.0+ acres of land.

Family reunion!

  • 5 of 5

we had the opportunity to enjoy Mariah's Bluff property for our Family Reunion! The home comfortably slept 17 people and four toddlers! We particularly enjoyed the wonderful kitchen, as it was stocked with many amenities! The backyard was certainly a plus as it overlooked beautiful Green Lake! We were able to utilize their pier! Just a note that the pier is located a couple of stairs below the property. For some this might be difficult but for my 85 year old parents they still managed well! We enjoyed the fire pit and days just hanging out at the property! Highly recommended the property!

Home needs a deep cleaning and safety updates

  • 1 of 5

Don't be fooled by the pictures of this property. The windows are full of spider webs and bugs, can't open them to let in the cool breezes off the lake. The two lower level "bedrooms" have a bed in each room, no closet or dressers. This level has no egress windows either. That is a major safety hazard. For a property that sleeps 16--there are not enough chairs for all to dine at the table and not enough forks for everyone to have one!! Cooking utensils are pretty sparse as well- we had to improvise for tongs and serving spoons Several of the kitchen towels were worn with visible holes in them. We had to wash twice during our stay so we could have clean , functional kitchen towels. A major drawback was having to take our garbage up the road (0.3 miles!!), there is nothing on site to put it in. The light switches were an adventure- never sure which one turns on what, it would be helpful to have some of the main ones marked. There was no emergency exit map and the fire extinguisher expired in July 2013.

For the rental price we were expecting a home that has been kept up well, is clean and safe. We have rented in the Wautoma area for several years and thought we would give Green Lake a try. We definitely won't be returning to this property in the future!!

Mariah's Bluff...all you could hope for in a Northwoods getaway!

  • 5 of 5

When you grew up in the midwest...your summer vacations most likely consisted of a cabin....a lake...and lots of outdoor mischief. The beauty of Green Lake is that it offers all the rustic charm of the Northwoods...with enough sophistication to ensure that you don't feel like you are in a tent threatening to be carried away by mosquitoes. This home is spacious...tastefully decorated but not too upscale to ruin the peaceful mojo of the lake. We had several families...dogs...and everyone going in different directions. Fishing...boating...camping...bonfires...Sharkweek....Cards against Humanity....golf....sailing....paddleboarding....you name it...its all there. Oh yeah...the view from every part of the house will make you smile. The kitchen is gigantic and never felt cramped even with 12 people. Coffee in the morning from the porch...was absolutely heavenly. Bravo, Mariah's Bluff....
