Remodeled 1870's Frankfort Farmhouse On 9 Beautiful Acres

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Comfortable, 3-bedroom Farmhouse In The Woods, Near Lake Michigan & Crystal Lake

This red farmhouse sits on 9 wooded acres in a small valley half-way between Frankfort and the Congregational Summer Assembly, or CSA. It is about 1 ½ miles from the Frankfort Harbor Beach, the same distance from Crystal Lake, and a ¼ mile “crows flight” from Lake Michigan. It sleeps eight in the three bedrooms; two bedrooms have queen beds and one has two twin beds and a double bed.

++++ Please see at the bottom of the description for payment options +++

There is a wrap-around porch in front and a covered porch and open deck in the back. Both offer beautiful views. The front lawn is shaded by large maple trees nearly 150 years-old. The back view is dominated by a large willow, a meadow, and the maples, oaks and pines on the hill.

There is lots of room for a woodsy stroll or for throwing a ball around as well as plenty of seating for conversation, reading or just taking in the lake air. We love walking into Frankfort each evening along a small country road to watch the sunset with an ice cream. In the morning, the same trip brings hot, fresh-baked doughnuts and coffee.

This recently remodeled farmhouse was built in the 1870's by one of the first European families to settle in the Frankfort area. It retains the quirky but comfortable character of 150 years of custom building and remodeling. There are hardwood floors throughout the first floor and a painted pine floor upstairs. The kitchen island has bar-top seating and a smooth-top electric range. Enjoy meals in the dinning room or on the covered back porch. We have remodeled the bathroom since last fall. We will post pictures in May.

Popular local activities include boating, fishing, swimming, bicycling, golfing and just hanging out. There are a range of nearby shops for fine or relaxed dining, craft beers, local music, local produce including fruits and smoked fish, local ice cream and fudge, gifts, art and crafts, and more. We are very close to Frankfort and Point Betsie Lighthouses and not too far from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

About George Moore

Paula's family had a cottage in the Congregational Summer Assembly when she was growing up. The children spent most of each summer here and came to love the CSA and the Frankfort area. We have returned to vacation here many times over the years. It is always special and magical - the clear lakes, sandy beaches, cool summer weather, trees and dunes, ice cream and fudge, and especially the gorgeous sunsets over Lake Michigan. Always the question arose, "It's so great! Why doesn't someone buy a cottage here?"

George Moore purchased this house in 2012

Why George Moore chose Northwest

When we began looking to buy we had a CSA cottage in mind. But when we saw the farmhouse we couldn't believe the potential to have a great get-away house and our own woods and meadow too. We love the solitude and sense of isolation. But, the fact that all this is within easy walking or biking distance from both Frankfort and the CSA, makes it almost too good to be true.

What makes this house unique

In our remodeling we have tried to preserve the away-from-it-all style we love about the old CSA cottages. We keep plenty of chairs on the front and back porches and usually eat on the back porch table. We love to watch as each season brings its touch to the woods and meadow. We keep our eyes out for early morning deer and a variety of birds all day long.

Peaceful spot in the woods

  • 4 of 5

The farmhouse was just what our family was looking for, a quiet and peaceful spot to relax, enjoy nature, and still have accessibility to many things to do like the beach, sunsets, hiking and canoeing. We all had a great time.

Very dirty and unwelcoming!

  • 3 of 5

The property was great, secluded no neighbors, beautiful landscape.

The house on the other hand was not, when we arrived the front porch and front door were covered in spiders and webs!

The inside of the house was just as bad, they baseboards were covered in spiders, the kitchen had food crumbs left all over the place, the inside of the windows were covered in dead bugs and cobwebs.

We had some food that was raided by rats during the night inside the house. The shower had mold growing all over it, and while I forced myself to use it, during my shower spiders started coming out from the water faucet head in the shower.

All in all we would love to visit Frankfort again it was a fantastic place, but we would never stay here again and quite frankly are turned off by the home away vbro experience furthermore.

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your concerns with us. It's very important to us that people enjoy their stay at our farmhouse. We are addressing as many of your concerrns as possible. Most notably, we are removing the older bathtub and installing a new tile shower for use next season.

A Great Stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying at the farmhouse. The setting was so peaceful and it was a quick drive into downtown Frankfort. We would stay there again next time we are in the area!

Close to Frankfort but you would not know it

  • 4 of 5

The Farmhouse is a great place to relax with the large covered back deck. We were there with 4 guys fishing and when there that is where we spent all our time cooking and eating. Very quiet. Never heard a neighbor. It could use a microwave and clothes dryer.

A lovely stay in a beautiful place

  • 4 of 5

A lovely old house close to town but in the woods. It was definitely quaint and rustic. We enjoyed the stars, sitting by the fire at night, and the queen bed on the first floor. We had some issues with the house but George was responsive in taking care of them.

Farmhouse solitude

  • 4 of 5

Our stay in the little red farmhouse was shared with another couple who had never been to the midwest before. It's location very close to Frankfort made it easy to get to the hubbub of the town, yet the acreage and location on a one block street made it quiet day and night to enjoy the solitude of the open air back porch and the woods behind the home. Great for big sky star watching at night, fire pit gatherings, and hiking in the woods on the property. We had bikes and enjoyed the close proximity to the rail to trails nearby to Suttons Bay and around Crystal Lake. The nearness of Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes and Pierce Stocking drive is another plus. The house was well stocked, clean and comfortably furnished. The only difficult aspect was the steep stairs to the 2nd floor, but if anyone has trouble with this the first floor bedroom is the best place to sleep. We would return in a heartbeat!
