This sun-filled, very old and newly renovated house is situated in the village of Quillan is nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains and overlooks the Aude river as well as nearby mountaintops.

The house set on 3 floors has 2 large bedrooms and one smaller bedroom, each with windows - the first two rooms each have a double-bed, the smaller room with a single bed. There is one newly finished full bathroom and a second finished 'beach bathroom' (a relic of the wine maker who was the previous owner as is the 'atelier' in the back of the ground floor level). The house also boasts a large kitchen with a long 'harvest' table and restaurant-style gas stove. The living/sitting room offers views of the river and mountains as well as Wifi, cable television, stereo and dvd player.

There are separate electrical heaters in main rooms, bathroom and bedrooms. All amenities are included with the rental of this property including bed linens, towels, dishes, cookware, utensils, hair dryer, coffee maker, toaster, washer and dryer. A large storage room on the main floor is perfect for skis, beach stuff, suitcases, kayaks, bicycles, etc...

The village of Quillan is located in the 'Cathar' region of France and is home to one of the castles from that era. It is conveniently situated approximately 1.5 hours by car from the Toulouse airport and 45 minutes from Carcasonne. Narbonne beach is about 45 minutes away, Andorra and Barcelona about 2 hours each.

Many visitors to the Quillan area come to see the local castles, remaining from the time of the Knights Templar. Day trips to many of these are within a few minutes-drive in multiple directions. Visitors are also fond of local wineries, restaurants, outdoor activities like hiking, rafting, cycling, climbing and skiing.

An outdoor farmer's market is held every Wednesday and Saturday mornings. During the months of July and August, the village square comes to life with live music and a festive atmosphere in the evenings.

A substantial discount is available to anyone looking for longer-term accommodation (2 months or more).

The house is owned by a couple who are from Montreal, Canada and is used a a seasonal home and rental by this family.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just dropping you a note to tell you how much I enjoyed my visit to your home in Quillan.

The house is so cozy. We spent lots of time in the fabulous kitchen sitting around the harvest table and listening to the river flowing by. The kitchen is so well equipped we were able to prepare most of our meals there. Lots of freshly baked baguettes and cheese eaten around the table. The grocery stores, bakeries and the market were all within a close walk. Very easy to nip down to the bakery first thing in the morning. Of course there are also some lovely restaurants within walking distance, as well as cafes in the square where one could drink a coffee or a beer and enjoy watching the world go by.

There was always something to see either looking out the window or sitting out by the river wall.

We were seeing ducks and babies manoeuvring the rapids or some kayakers doing the same thing. Although we didn't participate there was water rafting and kayaking a close distance away through a pretty exciting gorge. Also a train trip in that area.

We enjoyed the local hiking trails that took you off into the mountains or just along the lower trails where you would meander by the local fields with horses and dogs. The bird watching on those trails was also excellent. Lots to see if you have access to a vehicle. Having said that I never felt like I had need to leave town to find things to do. With mountains out the window and in view outside, one felt so relaxed and away from the hustle bustle of the outside world.

The village itself also offered lots of places to stroll including the market, the occasional parade, historical sites galore, old castle type buildings, often within the sound of the quickly flowing river. The flowers are abundant and you never know where you are going to see some gorgeous wisteria hanging from a window or an archway.

We had opportunity to meet some if the locals including yoga instructor and an artist......they were most delighted to meet visitors to town.

The house itself has been delightfully renovated and we all had lots of room (5 adults). All appliances and bathroom and kitchen up to date and in perfect working condition. The upstairs lounge is a wonderful place to relax and get caught up on emails or read a book. A large TV is available to help you with your French or just relax watching a movie. With the windows open you can also hear the river burbling by.

All in all a wonderful place to visit and tour the area.

Perfect Holiday Spot!

  • 5 of 5

This home was immaculate, cozy yet spacious and access instructions were clear and concise.

The property is right on the river. We enjoyed watching the kayaks while sipping wine from the sitting room (especially when they flipped!). To cool off after a run or hike, the whole family loved swimming in the river where there are many safe for children to play (ours are 6 and 3 years old).

The Wednesday and Saturday markets were lovely. So much fresh food that it made it difficult to decide on eating in or out. Fresh croissants and baguettes in the morning, inexpensive great wines (and wines in bulk!) in the evenings... ooh la la!

If you're a climber, you'll want to check out the rock on the d117 in the direction of Perpignon. It's only 10-15 minutes away and absolutely stellar!

There are so many options of fantastic things to do in the area, as well as short drives away, that we'll need a few more visits before we get through even just the fantastic book of recommendations!

Quillan - Awesome location... beautifully renovated home!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved Quillan and was so happy staying in a home that was spotless, comfortable and was equipped with all possible conveniences.

Quillan was so beautiful and everything you would expect ... with the tall homes with colourful shutters, a variety of door knockers... loved walking around looking at them, narrow roadways - alleyways that weaved through the very charming town. It's breathtaking!

The house had everything you needed for a stay. Loved the 'red book' that was left in the kitchen. It was a manual that covered all things in the house, activities in the town and trips that could be taken with comments if you wanted to experience them. Any question you have... look at the 'red book' and find the answer.... wonderful!!!!!

When it came to exertions there are many chateau's and abbey's... all a short drive away. Quillan is surrounded by landmarks. Again, perfect location.

There was so much to do and visit that we came back a second time... just working out when the third time will be!!! :)

Home away from home in the south of France

  • 5 of 5

Quillan is a charming and beautiful little centre with something for everyone, and this house is a perfect base from which to experience it all! After a day out hiking, kayaking, sightseeing, or whatever, it's simply amazing to open the windows facing the river to hear soothing sounds of the rapids, with the backdrop of the mountains in the distance.

My partner and I would start each day with a short walk to get fresh pain and croissants from bakery, or delicious cheese or meats, and then end most days with a glass of wine or a beer at one of several nearby restaurants.

This home has all the comforts we hoped for and more, it was clean, beautifully furnished and well equipped throughout.

We love this place and have visited twice, hoping to return again soon!

Great opportunity to visit Quillan in Languedoc / Pyrénées

  • 5 of 5

Wow! What a trip! We left Montréal (2 adults and 2 kids..9 and 13) rented a car and drove to Quillan.. what an amazing ride! The views were out of this world. There are so many things to do when staying in Quillan.. We discovered Le Pays Cathare, visited Chateau Puivert, cité de Carcassonne, the history of Chateau Monségur just to name a few and climbed les Pyrénées by foot and by car. There is so much history! I could have stayed a year.. did not see the time go by! And the kids also loved the beach, only 50 minutes away.. The drive passes by dozens of vineyards.. it was our best summer ever!
