About Maythemi Salazar

My name is Maythemi and I was born and grew up in the same Playa Negra neighbourhood where my property is located. Currently I share my time between Panama and Costa Rica, this is why I decided to rent my beautifull beach house. My career is focused in eco-tourism and I like to share my passion and insider knowledge about the Southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica with visitors.

Maythemi Salazar purchased this house in 2011

Why Maythemi Salazar chose Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

This property was passed down to me by my father who is indigenous of Talamanca. My family has the privilege to live right in front of the ocean in spacious gardens.

What I like specially is that my property is in a tranquil residential neighborhood on a quiet sandy beach surrounded by lush nature, and still less than a mile away from the center of Puerto Viejo with its many restaurants, live music scene, shops and super markets.

My village is a multi-cultural, multi-ethnical community with many family owned businesses, artists and holistic health therapists.

What makes this house unique

I designed my house with large windows and folding or sliding doors which you can open up wide to the sun light and the sea breeze. There is a beautiful view to the ocean and a big garden which offers privacy.

A pletoria of many different activities and services are available, for example thai massage, relaxing massage, craneo sacral therapy can be arranged for your convenience at the house, as well as a private Caribbean cooking class or the services of a chef.

The well equipped kitchen gives you the comfort and freedom to cook or bake when ever and what ever you desire.

The airy Yoga Gazebo situated on the same property offers the opportunity to practice yoga with a view to the sea, with classes at a special discount fee for our guests.

Great house in a great area!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house. It had plenty of room - more than we needed for the two of us. The house is separated from the beach only by a gravel road. Beach access was just across that road. There was an outdoor shower in the yard which was nice for washing off the sand. The front porch was a great place to stay out of the sun and still enjoy the sound of the waves. The kitchen was well equipped (no microwave though) and had almost everything we needed (a large bowl for salad would be a good addition). It was nice to have a great non-stick pan for cooking breakfasts.

The king sized bed was very comfortable. The mosquito nets were not needed when we were there. I never once saw a mosquito but there were little no-see-ums just at sunset that bothered me a little (but nothing more than a minor annoyance).

On our first day the water pump for the hot water quit working and the owners were there immediately to get it fixed. On the second day, I locked myself out. The owner's mother lives next door and she was very kind to let me back in. The house does have a security system. The gates on the yard both lock as well so we felt very secure.

You can walk into the town on the beach but it would be 30-45 mins or so. It is a 5 minute drive. There were lots of good restaurants - we really liked Lazlo's Catch of the Day. The gaucamole and ceviche at the Point (just 10 mins walk down the beach) was great. The beach BBQ on Sunday at Hotel Banana Azul (5 mins walk away) was also great.

We highly recommend this property.

Christmas time in Puerto Viejo

  • 5 of 5

"The best vacation ever" according to my wife.

We trully enjoyed our stay in this beautiful beach house.

been able to hear the waves crashing on the beach was magical

afternoons/ nights at the front porch area were special and the host Maythemi and family were super welcoming and informative..

the house very comfortable and clean.

Cleaning lady (Liliann I think) was sweetheart and very helpful.

Kids had a fantastic time by the beach

We are definitely coming back to this house and this town.

Month long stay

  • 5 of 5

I highly recommend this house. I would happily stay there again. The house is beautiful, clean, and has most of the essentials for cooking. The location is great; easy access to the beach and town. The beds are comfortable. It was wonderful listening to the sounds of the waves while falling asleep at night. Also, Maythemi and her family are incredibly nice and helpful (she went to all the trouble to locate a high chair and a playpen for us before we arrived). That being said, another review spoke of the lack of screens and bugs. This is really just part of being on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, very few houses have AC or screens here. There is no way to avoid it. The house is cleaned frequently, so it's not much of an issue. As for the water, the town had issues while we were there also. Don't drink the tap water!!! Bottled water is everywhere and I'd recommend making use of it. This is also just part of the environment there. Puerto Viejo is such a fun, interesting, multicultural town that it's worth dealing with these issues. :)

Once in a lifetime experience

  • 4 of 5

My boyfriend and I rented this house for a week to celebrate my birthday. The house itself is beautiful and in an excellent location. The master bed was very comfortable. We basically had the black sand beach to ourselves all week. DEFINITELY rent a bike for your stay. It's a 20 minute beach walk to downtown Puerto Viejo, but with a bike it's 5 minutes. Plus you'll be able to explore the other surrounding towns, which I recommend. I highly suggest checking out Tasty Waves Cantina in Playa Cocles and The Point, which is right down the road from the house. Both spots have delicious food and excellent service.

The rental house is completely open to the outside (no window/door screens, decorative holes in walls, etc) so we did have a TON of bugs and gecko droppings to avoid around the house for the entire stay. Additionally, there was an issue with the town water before our stay, so the water was unsafe to drink and a yellow/brown color. Not very pleasant, but also not the property's fault.

The yoga studio in the back is much closer than we anticipated. The students walk directly in front of the house, twice a day, and are about 10 feet behind the kitchen window during the class. This did cause some awkward moments while getting dressed in our bedroom, which faces the front yard.

Make sure to bring your own beach towels/chairs, as the property specifically asks that you don't use theirs at the beach. The WiFi at the house was excellent. They also have satellite TV for rainy nights.

Maythemi was very helpful in setting up ground transportation for us and recommending some activities. She and her mother were both very welcoming and helpful. Overall, we both really enjoyed our stay and have stories to tell for years to come!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the sincere review, this always helps to improve and get better every time! Puerto Viejo is nicely located in a tropical weather and is surrounded of lots of nature, this is the beauty of our area. Bugs are something that cant be fought against, the nice thing of the house and of the area is that you can enjoy the nature from with in the house by having open doors and windows which allows the nice Caribbean ocean breeze to come in. The geckoes actually help to mantain the amount of bugs as minimum as possible, here we have to learn to live in harmony with nature friends! About the water issue, there was a problem with it in the whole town, I know of other houses that had the same problem, I contacted the water company of the area (AyA) I did not have a great answer of them, but after seeing other persons complain on facebook looks like they have understood and solved the problem now; It was the only time that this happened and unfortunately there was someone renting the house, this was a very rare occasion, I live here since I was born and that never happened before, these kind of things are so embarassing as it goes out of ones hands. Anyway, tourists should know that tap water in all Costa Rica is not recommended at all for drinking. My mother and me always try to give our best for guests to feel happy and comfortable! Regarding transport in the area of Puerto Viejo, another option as the bikes is also to rent a car here in Puerto Viejo so you don´t have to drive from San Jose to Puerto Viejo which is kind of scary for some persons. There are several car rentals here. The yoga students are very respectful as they know there are guests at the house, I already build a back separated gate from the back property that I also own and they are no longer passing thru the property, I also planted a live fence with flowers that blocks the view from the kitchen to the yoga gazebo, giving privacy for our guests, the classes are from Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 10:00 am, and on tuesdays as well in the evening. A special price is offered for the house guests to join the class! I am always happy to answer any question of the house or area, and when already here anything I can do to make the stay better and more pleasant I will! Pura vida Maythemi

Peaceful, private gorgeous beach house

  • 5 of 5

The house is large with comfortable beds, great kitchen, fabulous view and access to the black sand beach. Birds everywhere. Private yoga classes in a backyard gazebo. Even if you don't partake, students are quiet and respectful. This is a perfect retreat from hectic schedule. Perfect place to do nothing but relax and enjoy the Caribbean.
