Everything was as Promised

  • 5 of 5

A lovely cottage hidden amongst the greenery. Very well provisioned for a comfortable stay. Greatly appreciated the secluded, quiet respite. Well located for easy access to Volcano National Park. We would readily stay here again in the future if the opportunity presented itself.

BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this wonderful property for three days with our three children and my parents. There was plenty of room for everyone.

The property is SO BEAUTIFUL. The kids loved playing in the large yard and we loved hanging out in the hot tub listening to the sounds of the forest.

It is a close drive to Volcano National Park also.

The only regret I have is that our stay wasn't longer.

25th Anniversary Getaway

  • 4 of 5

This was mine and my wife's first trip to Hawaii and this was an amazing place to stay. The location of the house is great for visiting Volcano National Parks, seeing the lava flow into the ocean, botanical garden, waterfalls, black and green sand beaches. The privacy of the house is unsurpassed by any house or cabin I have ever stayed in. You can hear neighbors at different times but you can not see them. Having the hot tub to come into after hiking and walking was great. The coffee and Macadamia nuts were a nice extra touch. Having a cooler and grocery bags to use during our stay simplified outings by being able to pack our lunch and drinks for the day out. The only reason for not giving a 5 star rating is the living room furniture. They look great but are not comfortable for relaxing at the house. We cooked most all of our meals during the week we were able to stay and the only thing we were lacking was a sharp knife. The one bed we slept in was very comfortable. All the little extras in the house were nice, like laundry detergent, extra shampoo. One side note is that when we first arrived we could not find the hair dryer. It is under the sink in the master bath but the doors were stuck. Don't know if it's the moisture that caused this but thought I would include this to possibly help someone else. Having a washer and dryer in the house allowed us to pack a lot lighter than normal. I would like to return to the big island one day and if this house is available would consider renting again. We ate at the Thai food truck in Volcano great food with large serving. Jeff and Cathy were great to work with and answered all questions and made several recommendations.

So peaceful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We arrived here for part of our third and final week on the Hawaiian Islands. It was so quiet and peaceful - the only noises we heard were the tree frogs and birds. I loved all the tree ferns and seeing the lava tube right there! It was an excellent location for going to the National Park, and easy to go back after dinner to see the caldera lit up. We picked up Thai take-out and took it back to the house to eat. It was delicious and nice to spend the time on the porch. Wish we could have stayed longer. Next time...

Five Stars

  • 5 of 5

I'm a veteran vrbo renter, and I'm pretty picky as well. I tend to read as many prior reviews of the place as I can, and if there are a high percentage of "five star" reviews, I feel confident that my upcoming stay will be a great one. The Secret Garden's reviews online definitely met my 5-star prerequisite as I read through them (and the hot tub clinched it, I must admit), and I went ahead and booked our 4 night stay for myself, my husband, our daughter, son-in-law and 7 year old grandson. As we drove onto the property and saw the surrounding ohia forest and heard the many native birds singing, I was pretty excited. The house itself, with its ohia wood posts, was beautiful and in excellent condition. The 3 bedrooms were large and the beds were extremely comfortable, and the space heaters in the bedrooms were perfect for the chilly mountain mornings. The kitchen/refrigerator was clean and had most everything we needed for meals at "home," including some leftover things in the fridge from previous tenants (peanut butter and jams). We spent a bunch of relaxing times in the small (two person) but very new-looking hot tub overlooking the "forest" while the coqui frogs chirped cheerily at dusk; so wonderful! We were able to watch a dvd with the grandson and make a fire in the wood stove as well with the wood provided for us. Took long walks around the neighborhood and of course spent hours at the Volcano Visitor Center and surrounding areas because it was such a short (10 minute) drive from the house. We also found a couple of small convenience stores to refill food/drink supplies at the house nearby, although we had shopped at Foodland in Hilo for our main meal items before driving up to the Secret Garden the first night. I warned you that I'm "picky," so the only two things that I feel could have been improved were these: the bathroom towels were quite thin and not very absorbent. A few beach-sized towels would have been extremely helpful for use after the hot tub, as well; we kept having to wash and dry the thin bathroom towels to have enough on hand for the 5 of us to share. The only other improvement that I would suggest would be a more comfortable "couch" in the living area. The rattan, tropical style couch wasn't so good for lounging after a day of hiking (seat and back pillows slip around a lot). Other than those two things (towels and couch), the Secret Garden amazed and delighted us, and we would return in a heartbeat!
