Five Stars

  • 5 of 5

I'm a veteran vrbo renter, and I'm pretty picky as well. I tend to read as many prior reviews of the place as I can, and if there are a high percentage of "five star" reviews, I feel confident that my upcoming stay will be a great one. The Secret Garden's reviews online definitely met my 5-star prerequisite as I read through them (and the hot tub clinched it, I must admit), and I went ahead and booked our 4 night stay for myself, my husband, our daughter, son-in-law and 7 year old grandson. As we drove onto the property and saw the surrounding ohia forest and heard the many native birds singing, I was pretty excited. The house itself, with its ohia wood posts, was beautiful and in excellent condition. The 3 bedrooms were large and the beds were extremely comfortable, and the space heaters in the bedrooms were perfect for the chilly mountain mornings. The kitchen/refrigerator was clean and had most everything we needed for meals at "home," including some leftover things in the fridge from previous tenants (peanut butter and jams). We spent a bunch of relaxing times in the small (two person) but very new-looking hot tub overlooking the "forest" while the coqui frogs chirped cheerily at dusk; so wonderful! We were able to watch a dvd with the grandson and make a fire in the wood stove as well with the wood provided for us. Took long walks around the neighborhood and of course spent hours at the Volcano Visitor Center and surrounding areas because it was such a short (10 minute) drive from the house. We also found a couple of small convenience stores to refill food/drink supplies at the house nearby, although we had shopped at Foodland in Hilo for our main meal items before driving up to the Secret Garden the first night. I warned you that I'm "picky," so the only two things that I feel could have been improved were these: the bathroom towels were quite thin and not very absorbent. A few beach-sized towels would have been extremely helpful for use after the hot tub, as well; we kept having to wash and dry the thin bathroom towels to have enough on hand for the 5 of us to share. The only other improvement that I would suggest would be a more comfortable "couch" in the living area. The rattan, tropical style couch wasn't so good for lounging after a day of hiking (seat and back pillows slip around a lot). Other than those two things (towels and couch), the Secret Garden amazed and delighted us, and we would return in a heartbeat!

Great location for volcanoe. Quiet space. Kids loved yard, hot tub, and lava garden. Easy drive. Great restaraunt Ohelo near. Could use a little more kitchen gear for those staying longer and cooking. Beds comfortable. Internet good.

A slice of Paradise...

  • 5 of 5

This house embodies the desired combination of thoughtful owners and efficient managers. They have thought of absolutely everything, making for a stressless stay. In addition, the setting is spectacular: total seclusion and privacy, which can be most appreciated sitting in the hot tub after a long day exploring VNP, which is just a few minutes away from the house. The lava tube/secret garden is beautiful. Can't imagine anyone risking injury and/or ruining their stay in this magical place by going into the tube. Besides all the possible activities the area provides, this lovely home is a destination in itself. Our 7 year-old son wanted us to "come home" earlier each time we went out just so we could enjoy this gorgeous home. Thank you very much for making it available for rent.

Our family spent three days here and it met our needs fully. The property is off the beaten path but very close to the National Park.
