Overview

About the property

4 Bedrooms, 4 Bathrooms, 17 Sleeps (house + barn apartment for extra charge)

10.5 acre property sits 40 ft above the beautiful and wild Llano River.

Our getaway, featured in November 2016 issue of Better Homes & Gardens, sits in the middle of a 12 mile remote stretch of the Llano River. It offers an ideal location for group gatherings in a light filled and spacious home. You can enjoy unique views and access to the river where you can swim, kayak, fly fish, bird watch or simply sit under the 300-year-old oak tree and take it all in.

The three bedroom home offers sleeping for eleven, with a master bedroom, bunk room, and guest room.

-the master bedroom has a queen bed, amazing floor to ceiling windows, outdoor access and ensuite bathroom.

-the bunk room has two double beds, and two twin beds outfitted in handmade blankets from india.

-the guest room has one queen and twin bed, soft white linens and one-of-a-kind Bolivian blankets.

-there are two full guest bathrooms. Both include unique design elements that speak to the natural landscape.

The open floor plan with two story vaulted ceilings and walls of sliding doors allows you to experience the outdoors while in.

-the living area includes old barn wood floors, a local mason stone fire place, game nook, and comfortable lounge seating.

-the dining area features collected vintage pieces from all over Texas with a custom designed chandelier. It seats 12 and is perfect for dinners and lingering conversations.

-the kitchen is fully equipped with a gas range and oven, microwave, kitchen aid mixer, Cuisinart, and plenty of beautiful concrete counter tops. The vintage butcher block island is a spacious place to gather for cocktails and cooking. You won't be in need of plates, pots, or glass wear while enjoying your dining experience.

One of the best features of the Llano River home is the outdoor living spaces. You can always find a good place to sit and enjoy the landscape.

-the screened in porch has comfortable lounge seating where you experience Hill Country breezes.

-the expansive back porch overlooking the bend in the river includes rocking chairs, Carlos Ocho lounge chairs, and a 10 person dining table. There is no better place to drink your coffee in the morning.

If more room is needed for guests a well decorated barn apartment is available for an additional charge. It has bunk beds that sleep six, a bathroom with a shower and sink, a kitchenette and sitting area. its back porch is perfect for birdwatching. (Ask about apartment pricing.)

And the river! It's so great for swimming, sitting in the cool water & talking, & kayaking. The fishing is great too; lots of large mouth bass, Guadalupe bass, bluegill & catfish.

It's great in the fall or winter for watching birds & wildlife, taking long walks & relaxing in front of the fireplace. There are so many nooks where you can sit down, enjoy a beautiful view & read a good book.

About Bruce Lowe

Native Texans. Martha grew up in Austin & is a graduate of the University of Texas. Bruce grew up in Houston & graduated from Texas A&M. We moved to Austin in 2014. We have two adult children (an interior designer & a musician) who both live in Austin. We love living in the middle of Austin & getting away to our wonderful place in the Hill Country.

Bruce Lowe purchased this house in 2010

Why Bruce Lowe chose Texas

We wanted to find a place to get away from things, have family/friend fun in a secluded & beautiful location. Martha grew up in the Hill Country and we have family there and have always had an attraction to it. We love water and began looking at properties along several Hill Country rivers. We looked at numerous properties with nothing grabbing our hearts. Then, boom, we found this place. Martha & I knew it when we first saw it. This was a family decision so our kids visited the place a couple of days later. As they stood under the old oak tree they texted us, 'this is it'. One of the best decisions we've ever made!

What makes this house unique

We were sold on this place as soon as we stood under the giant old oak tree, looking down upon the gorgeous river curving through pristine Hill Country land. We've loved it ever since and grow more enchanted with it each time we gather there.

We love the Llano River, and the only thing that makes it better is having accommodations such as these.really takes the cake. Everything you need for a great time is right there! Great fishing as well. Also, the owners are very easy to work with!

Wedding Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely stunning! I can't say enough about this property and the Lowe family. There were 15 of us celebrating my sons wedding that was held in Castell.

We had the rehearsal dinner in Mason. This home is perfectly situated to both venues. As I was a bit scattered brained being the mother of the groom, I had forgotten a few things we needed. The Lowe family had it all. Absolutely loved the kitchen! The home had plenty of room for all of us. We were able to enjoy each other and relax. All the beds are comfortable. The bathrooms are spacious and well designed. The grooms party stayed in the barn apartment. They had plenty of room and were comfortable.

The beautiful home made a beautiful event even better. We also took groom and groomsmen pictures in the beautifully landscaped yard. We have all decided that we can't wait to come back when we can simply enjoy the home.

Thank you to Bruce and your family. You made a nervous mom's, weekend very memorable.

Magical Texas Hill Country property

  • 5 of 5

This property is so thoughtfully conceived and executed as a no-fuss getaway spot. We had a reunion of old college friends and our wives and could not imagine a better spot. Peaceful surrounds, great wildlife viewing opportunities, fantastic sitting/common areas, and beautiful views. Kitchen, baths, and bedrooms are very nice and super comfortable. Can't say enough good things, and we look forward to going back. Thank you for sharing your home!

Beautiful house! But misleading info and fees.

  • 2 of 5

This is a stunningly beautiful home on a wonderful stretch of the Llano River that was absolutely perfect for my family's weekend.

My negative issues are with the owner & VRBO's way of doing business.

The home owner advertised their home as 4bed & 4bath(at the top of the page). The home was actually 3bed & 3bath. If you want 4b&4b, that would be an additional amount for the barn (see fine print after "Read More" drop down). The barn is not shown in the photos and is nowhere near as nice as the main house. I will say after raising a stink about this "inconsistency" we were given access to the additional area.

(To further complicate things, VRBO will not let me list actual dollar amounts in a review.) The home owner charged an additional cleaning fee equal to +25% of the base rental price, which was obviously not shown until check out - this is just sneaky. And VRBO added a 10% fee which was not shown until checkout.

The home was advertised at as 4b&4b for a fairly reasonable price, but once fees were added it came out to nearly 140% of the price shown - and that was for only 3b&3b! As irritating as the four figure security deposit might have been, after seeing the house I think this deposit amount was fair. For only a 2 night stay, with security deposit, my credit card took a hit that was 240% of the base rental price for two nights! (This would be impressive if I could show numbers - plug in the price you expect to pay.)

After I had paid the up front amount online and agreed to VRBO's legal stipulations, the owner then sent me an additional SEVEN page legal document that, amongst other property details, requested a list of all potential occupants, then I had to sign, scan and return it. This was absurd. ALL legal agreements between visitor and owner should be controlled by VRBO and fully displayed before payment.

I hope the owner finds a better/more honest way to describe their property and fairly incorporates the "cleaning fee" into the price. Due to the extra legal documents and hidden fees I will probably not use VRBO in the future.

Owner's Response: We designed our home on the Llano for the purpose of enjoyable family gatherings. We share this home through HomeAway with the desire that all of our guests will enjoy it as we do. To this end we have put what we believe is complete information on the site. We sometimes find customers who don't take the time to utilize the HomeAway system to answer their questions and learn more about our property. This customer could have learned about the additional charge for the barn apartment by reading the property description prior to booking. He could have also understood the terms of our rental agreement by viewing the agreement that is attached to the booking confirmation page. We do ask our guests to sign this same agreement after booking to insure they fully understand our guidelines for their benefit and for ours. We want every guest to be happy with their experience and are sorry that this guest was not. We will continue to work hard to be sure our guests understand what we can offer them in a vacation property and that they receive the experience they desire.

Idyllic

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Lowe's place for the Castell Grind. The house provided the perfect place for a guys trip and was nice and close to our event. When we weren't racing, we had time to fly fish (they were biting!), read on the spacious porch overlooking the Llano River, swim in the river, or cook up meals in the kitchen. Very relaxing. The only thing missing was a TV to watch the NCAA Final Four games...but an iPad solved that problem!

Decor was outstanding, facilities were superb, host was communicative and accommodating. Highly recommend! We'll be back!

Amaizing house and views

  • 5 of 5

The house is amazing, has everything you need/want and more!!!! We also used the apartment in the barn, this was modest but well equipped.

Renter was very accommodating and communication was flawless.

We saw a couple of snakes near the river, which we knew was a possibility when we rented the house.
