Chalet retreat in the heart of Gros Morne National Park

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,000 sq. ft.
Property type chateau / country house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Million dollar view of Bonne Bay and Gros Morne Mountain.

On the hillside overlooking Woody Point, Bonne Bay and Gros Morne Mountain, on the road to Trout River and the majestic Tablelands this cabin is located in one of the most beautiful and scenic areas to be found anywhere. Parks Canada's Discovery Centre is in walking distance. Located on the outskirts of the town, this property is peaceful and private.

Woody Point is a registered heritage community, located within a UNESCO World Heritage site, Gros Morne National Park. The town is well known for the Writers at Woody Point Festival each August, as well as being a location for the wonderful summer events of Gros Morne Summer Music.

There is a television in the house, but currently no cable service although there are videos to watch if requested. There is cellular coverage for companies using the Bell cell network and recently the Rogers network became available here too. There is no telephone in the house.

There is a lot on the go in Woody Point during the peak of the season. In the spring I send an email to guests coming for the season with information about the area.

Some comments from my guest book:

"We had a fantastic time staying in your cabin! The view from the back deck combined with the extra comfy bed made it the perfect stay! :-)"

"Thank you for the great house! We lived the view and had a wonderful time in Gros Morne. We loved the wildlife at your house, a noise came to visit one morning, we also saw hummingbirds and crows."

"We stayed in your wonderfully artistic, warm & inviting home for the last days of our 2 week visit to Newfoundland. It rained, but fortunately your house us so delightful it did not matter. We made great food in your kitchen, so well stocked, and enjoyed the deck when the rain paused."

"We had a wonderful time at your cabin. Amazing views, great weather, many hiking adventures. Lived sitting on the back deck enjoying the beautiful views. Learned many interesting facts about the area. Everyone is so friendly."

"Thank you for sharing this lovely retreat with us. It was the perfect home base for exploration if the Park & local communities. The night at the Seaside was particularly memorable - the music was lovely!"

About Gayle Tapper

My Dad was from Woody Point, and I have recently built this house on land given to me by my aunt, for whom the property is named. My aunt was a well-known outdoors woman in her day.

There are great Park Trails nearby, such as the Green Gardens Trail. Gros Morne Mountain is on the north side of the park, about an hour's drive around the bay, where also are the communities of Norris Point and Rocky Harbour. Also the Western Brook Pond is located north of Rocky Harbour.

Charming, private property with a million dollar view and an "at home" feel.

  • 5 of 5

A charming, cozy, welcoming, relaxing home-like environment, with a million dollar view. Extremely private and quiet area within minutes of local amenities (walk or drive). Clean, comfortable beds, linens, towels and bathrooms. Well stocked kitchen for people who enjoy cooking; we took a trip to the local fish market in Rocky Harbour to prepare a lovely seafood feast back at the house. Gayle is a gracious host; gives you space, but always available by phone, text or in-person as needed. We had a medical emergency and Gayle was an absolute gem in terms of offering information and suggestions around how best to access medical care in the area. Lots of tourist related information available at the house and where to find additional information if you can't find what you are looking for there. The house is still under construction; while this did not prevent us from enjoying ourselves, for some it may be off-putting. For example, a tub had been installed in the upstairs bathroom, but the shower was not yet operational. It actually turned out to be serendipitous for us as it forced us to slow down and really unwind with long relaxing soaks in the the bath instead of quick, efficient showers. Albeit for others, bits and pieces of unfinished carpentry, plumping, drywall, etc., could be just the thing one wants to avoid on vacation. To each his own. We would gladly visit again and recommend this location.

Perfectly located, a 10 star view

If visiting Gros Morne you could not do better than Emma's Hill. It is a very comfortable cabin with great privacy and amazing view, yet walking distance to village amenities.

Cozy chalet in idyllic location

  • 5 of 5

Chalet has a cozy home-from-home feel, with an abundance of cooking amenities, information on local activities and events for when the weather is good, and games and film library for when it rains. It is located near a couple of community trails to the local village that provide either an elevated panoramic view of Bonne Bay, or a delightful 10 minute stroll along the bay itself. The local village has a number of welcoming restaurants and craft stores; our favourite being the dog-friendly Galliot cafe, which has a deck overlooking the Bay.

We truly loved our stay here and wished we could have stayed a bit longer because it is in such a peaceful spot, with probably one of the prettiest views - calm water, green mountains, tall peaks, tablelands and a sunrise that comes up right behind the mountains. It was also very conveniently located near trails you could reach by foot. It was less than a 5 minute drive to the Discovery Centre and trails there (e.g. Look Out Trail) and maybe 10 minute drive to the Tablelands. It was also walking distance in to Woody Point town so in the evenings we would walk down to get a drink and listen to some live music. Gayle was extremely helpful and her house was well equipped with everything that you needed - all the kitchenware and cooking ammenities you would need, interesting books, games, information/pamphlets/maps on the area and history, flashlights for nighttime, plenty of towels, a great outdoor grill for BBQing fresh local fish, etc. Her place is extremely cozy with big windows so you can enjoy the view. The rooms upstairs were comfortable and well lit. We also very much enjoyed the backyard garden and small patio deck, where we would sit during morning coffee, afternoon reading and evening drinks and tea. This was one of the best places we have stayed in, with enough isolation that you can enjoy the peacefulness and vastness that Gros Morne offers, but close enough to Woody Point and sight seeing spots that you are not spending much time driving at all and still can interact with the locals and support local businesses. We hope to come back again! Thank you Gayle!

Fabulous views, well appointed, convenient location.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a magical three days using this place as our base to explore Gros Morne. Highly recommended in terms of the views, the location relative to the sights and local restaurants (you can walk into town and to the Discovery Centre!) and the interior design and kitchen/bathroom features. Interestingly, the owner is a wonderful harp payer whose playing we were able to enjoy at the Seaside Restaurant in Trout River.

Highly recommended!

Car: recommended

Woody Point is renowned for its beauty. It is nearby to the Tablelands, part of an ancient oceanic tectonic plate, and evidence of the theory of tectonic plate movement. Beauty and the Tablelands are 2 of the reasons that Gros Morne National Park has UNESCO World Heritage status.

Park and community trails and walking are nearby, also the Parks Canada Discovery Centre is very close. I have a great view of Gros Morne Mountain, for which the park is named, but you'll have to drive around the bay to climb it, as it is on the north side of the park, along with Rocky Harbour and Norris Point.

Woody Point is home of St. Patrick's Church, now a performance space where many events of Gros Morne Summer Music are held. Also we are the home of the famous and immensely popular festival "Writers at Woody Point" each year in August.
