Bainbridge Island Beach Cottage With Spectacular Water, Mountain & Sunset Views

Bedrooms 1
Space 1,100 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 4

Located on a half acre beach-front estate, this charming two-level cottage is the perfect beach retreat for a couple or small family. Use it as a base to kayak Bainbridge Island's rugged coastline, explore the harbor, walk the beaches, or visit some of our local farms and vineyards. Then come home and relax as you watch the sun sink over the snow-capped Olympic Mountains in a swirl of oranges, pinks, and purples that mark the end of another excellent day in our little slice of paradise.

The cottage is located on a woodsy dead-end country lane that sees more neighbors walking their dogs than vehicle traffic. The downstairs features a bedroom with a cozy antique double bed, large closet, full bathroom, and washer/dryer. Upstairs is a comfortable living room with a queen sofa-bed, a well-stocked kitchen, and two more closets. On the side of the cottage is a small patio with table, chairs, and a gas grill where you can watch the sunset and enjoy our warm summer evenings. Parking is in front of the cottage and public transportation just two blocks away.

Two houses down you'll find public access to a trail and stairs down to our secluded beach, where you can enjoy picnics, beach-combing, or just watching the eagles soar and the otters frolic.

We have a single and a tandem kayak that you are welcome to use with advance notice.

About Tamar Lowell

We are a family of four that loves to travel. We often use VRBO for our own adventures, including recent trips to Costa Rica, Greece and Thailand. We live in the main house on the property and are available to help you with anything you might need.

Tamar Lowell purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Tamar Lowell chose Bainbridge Island

We fell in love with Bainbridge Island the first time we visited, and bought this property just four months later. We love being on the water with sunset views, boats sailing by, and wildlife all around.

What makes this cottage unique

We especially love this part of the island because it faces west and you get the sunsets over the snow-capped Olympic mountains and Puget Sound. Boats sail by year-round, and if you're on the beach and you look to the south you can see the ferry crossing from Seattle to Bermerton. Deer and raccoon visit regularly to munch on the blackberries, otters play in the water, and eagles and geese fly by daily. The beach is secluded and peaceful, and chances are you will be the only one on it!

Serenity on Bainbridge Island - the only way to visit Seattle area

  • 5 of 5

What a terrific visit to the Seattle region!!! In large measure, I can make that statement because of this wonderful space on Bainbridge's west-side became our home away from home for a week in late July 2017. The space felt large with living room and kitchen on entry level and bedroom and bathroom downstairs ...both levels having good size sliding windows that consistently circulated wonderful fresh cool air into the cottage and looked out onto Port Orchard Sound and presented sunsets that were unforgetable. It was an added bonus to have a washer and dryer so that we could return home with clean clothes and knowing this in advance we might have packed a few less items. Conveniently, there was parking right next to the entrance to the cottage and since the cottage is on a bluff, it is very near the water and behind the main house which is on the cliff's edge. Beach access is through a public access point nearly adjacent to the property ...down a short path and then down a series of very steep stairs and you are on the beach. During high tides, the beach is underwater ...easy enough to watch tide apps. The short road where the cottage is located is a "no outlet" road which means that there is very little traffic, making speed and noise no issue.

Bainbridge Island is a wonderful community. Although we didn't spend a lot of time on the island because we were so busy everywhere else, we are committed to returning and on the next visit staying on the island and getting to know it better.

We loved the daily commute on the Washington State Ferries ...a great way to start and end the day - there is truly a decompression event happening as you make this boat ride with Seattle skyline, Mt. Rainer and the Olympic mountains as a backdrop.

A word about the hosts, Tamara and Tom - they could not have been more welcoming and accommodating. Greeting us in the cottage was information about everything one might ask - where to grocery shop, where to dine and snack (ice cream, etc.), places of interest, how to use the TV, information about kayaking, etc. Tamara even notified us about being able to extend our stay if we wanted due to a gap before the next booking began.

You will love your stay here. Thank you Tamara and Tom. Hope to see you again soon.

Okay, here's an actual real review (not a 'puff piece')...

  • 2 of 5

1) Peek-a-boo view of Puget Sound (needs to have tree limbs cut and bushes trimmed down for a better view)

2) Fairly Clean

3) Larger kitchen and bar area made cooking/dining nice

1) Musty mold/decay smell that's overwhelming in the lower level. Likely the roof/wall leaks because it became pervasive when it rained -- we couldn't sleep and it became hard to breathe.

2) They have less than ideal high-bank waterfront (rental is not, just limited water view from behind the owners' house) and beach access is restricted to open public access a couple properties away. Also, the beach itself is not our locally common 'sand pebble' but the 'rocky/barnacle' type. Access is via a treacherous-feeling set of steep and long wooden stairs with rusty metal grates (for footing) accessed through a dimly lit pathway -- just not something you'll end up doing twice. No actual beach is available near high tide, so you're relegated to a public bench positioned above the cement bulkhead during those hours.

3) Bed is small and sort of jammed into a corner with no room to walk around it, just overall not very comfortable.

4) Parking was 'tight' to say the least. If you have a Honda Civic or smaller, you can parallel park/squeeze into the allocated spot, but you'll still be jammed into the bushes walking around your car. Lower area was available for our second vehicle, but again not adequate for a larger vehicle without having to exit the vehicle straight into the bushes.

5) Last issue is a bit hard to fathom and certainly unexpected with a VRBO: the host foisting personal politics on guests, i.e. promptly pushing our attendance at their 'gay pride rally' upon check-in. For some reason, Californians move here and subsequently seem intent on turning our great PNW into inner-city San Francisco... Hint: no thanks, we like it the way it is :)

Owner's Response: I’m surprised and sorry to hear that these guests did not enjoy their stay. We bent over backwards to accommodate them, including offering to let them check in early as we knew they were moving from another rental, and offering to let them park their second (very large) truck in our driveway. Unfortunately, a slight musty smell can happen in the Pacific Northwest at the end of a wet spring, amidst all of the trees. That’s why we keep a dehumidifier in the cottage and run it regularly. Had the guests notified us of their discomfort, we would have immediately turned it on for them. As I do with all of my guests, I texted Scott the day after he arrived to ask if everything was ok and if they needed anything. His response was “I think we’re good, but thank you for asking.” Most of our guests rave about our lovely secluded beach with public access one house up. It is rocky, like many of the beaches on Bainbridge, and is great for beach-combing, long quiet walks, and stunning sunsets. The stairway is maintained by the City of Bainbridge Island. This listing features clear pictures of the beach, the view, and the double bed, as well a reference to the public access, so none of this should have been a surprise. The guests asked no questions before booking the cottage. It seems that the real issue behind this review is the guests’ perception that we were foisting our politics on them. Bainbridge Island has lots of fun events throughout the summer, and I try to let our guests know about them. Most of our guests consider that friendly and helpful. The exact text I sent was: “Just FYI, if you are interested, there is a Pride ‘picnic’ at Waterfront Park from 4-8 today and there will be 4 bands there.” I also tell guests when there is a concert in the park, 4th of July parade, harvest festival, etc. There was nothing political intended and I'm very sorry that the guests were offended.

Hiking and kayaking

  • 5 of 5

Amazing place to visit. If you like hikes in woods among towering trees, walks on pebbly beaches and mountain views, consider bainbridge island.

The rental itself is humble but the hosts might be the best we've ever had. Very accommodating, helpful and just lovely people. We were able to use the kayaks and life jackets, the kitchen essentials were there and Tamar provided tips for restaurants, grocery stores and even a pretty amazing sunset one night.

The rental is a guest house. You can see the water from the couch on the upper floor. It's clean, quiet and peaceful, 2 min walk to the beach access spot. The beach is crawling with shore crabs the kids just loved playing with. While there we saw otters, a seal, deer, herons, bold eagle, etc.

Nice view, small bed and low ceilings

  • 3 of 5

We were frustrated by the tiny bed and uncomfortable sofa bed option. I am 6' tall and kept bumping my head on the low ceiling. It would be nice to have somewhere to sit other than the sofa bed. Great kitchen.

Owner's Response: Thank you for visiting our cottage. I'm glad you enjoyed the beautiful view and the well-stocked kitchen. I'm so sorry about your frustration. Most of our guests have found the cottage and our furniture to be very comfortable, especially the bed, the sofa, and the fun double armchair downstairs. You are quite right that the bed is not big. The antique double bed has loads of charm, but those wishing for a queen or king sized bed might be more comfortable elsewhere. Although it is listed in the cottage profile as a double bed, I will see if there is any way to make that more clear for future guests. The ceiling height is a legacy of 1940s construction. The upstairs ceiling is 8 feet high, and the downstairs ceiling is 6' 9" high. There is a single beam that is 6 feet high. I'm sorry to hear that you bumped your head on it! Thank you again for your feedback. I wish you all the best on your next visit to Bainbridge Island.

Wonderful get away!

  • 5 of 5

We were so happy to find that the pictures did not exaggerate this wonderful location. We thought we would sit outside more, but the view from the couch just couldn't be beat! This is a great location, 10-15 from the ferry to Seattle and the town of Bainbridge.

The owner, Tamar, gave us a sheet of information on things to do in the area. We tried several of the restaurants, we especially liked the Harbor Pub and of course, Mora Ice Cream!

We used the kayaks available at the house and also took a sealife kayak tour of Blakely Harbor with Exoctic Aqautics Kayaking and Scuba.

We found that some trips to Seattle were easier if we left our car on Bainbridge instead of taking it on the ferry. It's very easy to just walk into downtown Seattle.

The peace and quiet of this location was wonderful! It was very hard to leave.

Thank you Tamar!
