About Mike Tower

Mike and Paula are sorta retired, having retired from employment with the State of Oklahoma. Mike spends his time writing stories and books on the history of the wild west. Paula, however, can't handle unstructured time and works as the social worker for the local hospital. She is also a registered nurse licensed to practice in Colorado.

Mike Tower purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Mike Tower chose Cortez

Mike and Paula for the past 25 years have made a point of vacationing in the Southwest because they both feel better when in the southwestern United States, Mike because of heart problems and Paula because of allergies. Both also value privacy. So, when this property, set as it is away from the road on an acreage, came available they purchased it. The guest house was a plus. In fact they liked the guest house so much they considered living there and renting out the big house. But, 32 years of accumulated 'stuff' dictated they live in the big house.

What makes this cottage unique

The guest will notice right off the lush flower gardens around the guest house and main house. The gardens have something in bloom most of the growing season and are simply beautiful. As this is high desert, the flowers are made possible because of irrigation water shares which came with the property. One would have to go a long way to see anything quite like the variety of flowers which grows here.

This location for the traveler is ideal. It is within a few miles of the Mesa Verde; Hovenweep ruins; Crow Canyon; and Chaco Canyon. The Grand Canyon is an easy day drive as is Santa Fe.

Lovely restful base camp for exploring the ruins!

  • 5 of 5

This casita is about 5 miles south of Cortez, which is quiet, but still very accessible. Owners home shares the almost 40 acre property and they were very responsive. Their collection of books about Mesa Verde was especially appreciated! Washer and dryer are convenient and air conditioning is a must after hot days on the mesas! All of the amenities are included and the gardens are a lovely place to enjoy coffee before adventuring and wine afterwards!

This is an incredible guest house to stay in while visiting sw CO. The owners are super friendly and hospitable. They couldn't have been nicer. They greeted us when we arrived and showed us where everything was. Then they gave us our privacy. The guest house is adorable and impeccably clean. It is so comfortable and relaxing and we enjoyed it so much. We sat on the patio every evening and watched the sun go down and enjoyed the gardens and the smells of the plants. Inside, the owners have thought of everything you might need. There is nothing I would've changed about our stay and we can't say enough good things about it. The pictures are what you get and I would encourage anyone to stay at this VRBO. I know we will go back. We love that area to explore and vacation in and staying at this guest house was ideal.

Beautiful country setting

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was wonderful and the hosts were great. The cottage was very comfortable. It has everything you need for a great stay. The kitchen, living area with the fireplace, and bedroom opening onto a private yard were great. We watched the stars at night and ate breakfast while watching the deer and rabbits enjoy the grass. The gardens are really pretty. Our hosts greeted us and showed us around. They invited us to enjoy their property and let us know where we could hike right outside the cottage door. Would we stay here again? Absolutely !

Great Location and accommodations

  • 5 of 5

Perfect for two people. We visited Hovenweep, Canyons of the Ancients, Mesa Verde and Arches after coming up from Monument Valley, Goosenecks State Park and Valley of the Gods. We appreciate being able to have our preferred breakfast and light supper (with wine) in a private, very comfortable environment, while enjoying the local cuisine with leisurely lunches for our main meals during the mid afternoon after sightseeing. Our hosts could not have been more helpful and accommodating with many staples (coffee, filters, tea, laundry and dishwasher soaps, spices, paper products) provided. The grounds provided walking and wildlife opportunities in a private atmosphere.

Just like home in the southwest!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cottage set in the Ute Mountains. Come equipped with everything you need. So peaceful and relaxing! Was conveniently located near the Mesa Verde National Park which is what brought us to this region. The owners are lovely and are there if you need assistance. The southwest decor is beautiful and makes you feel apart of the culture.
