About Victoria Hamilton-Rivers

Originally British (recently an American Citizen!) I have been living in the San Francisco Bay Area as a permanent resident here since 2003. I am an Interior Designer and Home Stager by profession and have lived in Muir Beach since 2008. I believe this place to be among very few left in the world that are as unspoiled so close to nature and a major metropolis such as San Francisco. I find it deeply inspiring to call Muir Beach and it's wonderful community my home.

As the daughter of a British Army Officer, initially I travelled extensively to other parts of the world following my father's career and then subsequently my own. I fell in love with the San Francisco Bay Area when I first visited here in 1997 and I was captivated by the beauty of Muir Beach particularly, fairly early on in my visits to San Francisco from London.

I bought two cottages in Muir Beach in 2008: The Cottage At Muir Beach and Mole's Cottage named after my dearly beloved Labrador companion of 15 years and the characters in a book I grew up with entitled 'The Wind In The Willows.' Mole was a leading character in the novel by Kenneth Graham - always up to mischief and adventures on the river bank with friends.

Since launching The Cottage At Muir Beach in 2009, I have delighted in sharing this little slice of heaven with my guests from all over the world. It is an exceptional privilege to find this place and I hope by now offering Mole's Cottage as an adjacent property, that I will be able fulfill on the many requests I've received over the years from guests who have stayed, to broadly expand the accommodation I offer.

I have taken several years to develop beautiful succulent gardens at Mole's Cottage and lovingly renovated it's simple structure with imaginative ocean-inspired decorating that I trust will inspire.

Magical cottage, lush locale

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful visit - a remarkable retreat for the mind, body and spirit! The drive is not for the faint of heart, given the ups and downs of the shoreline approach roads, but the payoff is mighty, and made our stay even more special. Not far from San Francisco, it's easy to feel many hours away from the city even as it is visible on a clear day from windows and mirrors alike.

As an architect, I will elaborate a bit more than I normally would out of appreciation and admiration.

The magical experience of the cottage begins at the street, with sculptural driftwood signage, fencing decorated with waterfront motifs and gated arbor. The grounds are lush, colorful and exotic, and are an integral part of the experience. The lighted entry path and surprising, surreal outdoor spaces resonate while inside the cottage. The interior is designed for comfort, calm, view and delight. All the necessities are there, plus maps, recommendations for dinner, dvd's and found objects - shells, rocks, sea glass - that by the end of our stay we might have thought we collected. The Owner is very well organized and responsive, and totally behind the scenes at the same time. It felt like we were visiting a property that we owned.

The cottage is a magical tour de force - thank you, Victoria! I hope we can meet the next time Regina and I come to visit:-)

Owner's Response: My sincerest thanks to you for so beautifully sharing your experience of staying here. None of that is taken for granted by me even though I don't tend to reply to posts on-line because I'd rather it was you who had the last word! I did however want to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all my wonderful guests who come to stay, who take such great care of my beloved cottages and who do post comments. Not only is your feedback valuable to me in understanding what you've found special about the place but it's also incredibly useful to future guests who are trying to select somewhere to stay that will meet their expectations. I hope you will return and share your experiences with friends and loved ones visiting the San Francisco Bay Area. It doesn't get much better than Muir Beach in my opinion! With kind regards, Victoria.

A Charming Cottage Overlooking The Ocean

  • 5 of 5

This charming 2 BR, 1 BA cottage, is perched above Muir Beach, California. It has all the modern day furnishings one would expect. There are two patios, one on either side of the cottage; one patio is quite sunny with lounge chairs while the other is shady with outdoor furniture for dining. The overall first impression upon arriving, which remained throughout our week there, was of pristine solitude and privacy. It is very quiet. The local population is 300 or so, but I don’t think we saw more than a dozen people during our local walks. We were there in late September for a week, and the weather was most pleasant.

Using the cottage as a home base, we made day trips to San Francisco via the Sausalito Ferry, Napa Valley, hiking in Muir Woods, the Pacific Coast Highway up to Mendocino County, and dinners in Mill Valley. We also enjoyed the two local beaches and some meals at the local Pelican Inn.

The owner, Victoria, is very organized and everything advertised about the cottage was what we experienced. The cottage and grounds are beautifully and tastefully decorated, reflecting Victoria’s taste and skill as an interior designer. Nestled among hedges, thickets, and local fauna, one of the cottage's many charming aspects were the abundance of butterflies and hummingbirds just outside the windows. The views of the ocean from the cottage are breathtaking. Mornings were glorious. Sunsets were magnificent.

As an owner, Victoria was responsive and an excellent communicator. We had a minor issue with a clogged drain that was resolved the same day. If we could suggest an improvement, it would be to install screens on the two windows that do not have them (bathroom and kitchen).

One piece of advice: you must have a car and make sure it is small! The roads are (very) windy and narrow, and a small car navigates them nicely. We had rented a large SUV upon our arrival in San Francisco and traded it for a much smaller one after only one day. Large SUVs just don’t fit the local vibe here, and we found it otherwise challenging to navigate.

If we could sum up the cottage in one word: charming. Overall, a lovely week in a lovely spot. We highly recommend Mole’s Cottage!

This is one of the best places I have stayed at the coast. Moles Cottage is a gem. The detail in Victoria's decoration is superb. The view is to die for. It was so peaceful I could have easily stayed another week. I will definately be back. Thanks Victoria for sharing your beautiful home!!

The cottage was absolutely beautiful with a wonderful view of the ocean.

  • 5 of 5

Victoria thought of everything. She was very thorough in directions to anywhere you needed to go and had great suggestions. The cottage was wonderful- beautifully decorated. The only thing that was hard was the drive through Muir Woods to the cottage at night. With the darkness and fog that would set in driving through the Very windy roads was a bit much to navigate.

Quintessential Coastal Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This is our second time staying at Mole’s Cottage this summer; we have also stayed at the Cottage at Muir Beach. Both cottages are absolutely magical, the quintessential cottage-by-the-sea that transports you far away, even if you are just driving locally like we did.

Muir Beach is everything you want in an idyllic beach hideaway; it is easily seen and walked to from Mole’s Cottage, it quickly became a twice-daily ritual. The picture window in Mole’s living room frames the beach and cliffs perfectly - and on a clear day, you can see all the way to San Francisco. On this trip, we were fortunate to glimpse whales breaching just off the coast - Victoria had flagged this for us ahead and we had binoculars in hand.

The cottage is impeccably clean and very comfortable. The fully furnished kitchen has everything you could possibly need to cook, reheat, grill (easy-to-light) and serve. A dishwasher makes clean up easy. It’s a good idea to bring groceries with you as the winding road back out for errands takes a while and can spoil the retreat relaxation of being out there. A full-size fridge easily kept enough for us for our 8 day stay.

The master bedroom has a brand-new mattress that was very comfortable. The second bedroom has a stunning ocean view from its bedside picture window. The cottage has a wonderful selection of DVDs. We also brought a HDMI cable and hooked up our ipad to stream Amazon videos.

Victoria was the perfect hostess - hands off but promptly attentive if needed. She provides clear, detailed instructions by email and a binder of that information is in the cottage: local sites, groceries, wifi, beach access, emergency information (especially for earthquakes, which the cottage is fully stocked for).

The bathroom is clean and well-stocked, with hair dryers, towels, bathrobes. There is shower only, no tub, so no soaks. The cottage has a full size washer/dryer - handy after a day at the beach.

The cottage is done in shades of light blues/turquoises - the epitome of the romantic, seaside cottage. There is a second cottage next door, but the cottages are well-placed and privacy is not an issue. We had “neighbors” both times and didn’t notice their presence. A gorgeous succulent garden envelopes both cottages with thriving and flowering succulents, sea glass, driftwood and seashells. With the sound of the waves, rest and relaxation just naturally follow in this well-curated oceanside haven.
