About the property

3 bedrooms 3 bathrooms, single storey, rural views

"A delightful base for your holiday, set in glorious countryside close to unspoilt beaches."

The Lodge offers excellent accommodation and facilities in a tranquil rural setting, surrounded by Dorset’s loveliest countryside, and only 5 miles from the unspoilt beaches and golden sandstone cliffs of the coastline.

Approached along a private drive and set well back from the road, this detached cottage is perfectly positioned for enjoying this delightful corner of Dorset.

There are a variety of beautiful beaches, both sand and pebble, within a five to ten mile radius, including those at Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seatown, Eype, West Bay and Burton Bradstock. Fossil-rich cliffs define this dramatic stretch of coastline, which encompasses the 2,000-acre National Trust estate of Golden Cap. This is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and superb walking country, both on the rolling chalk hills overlooking fertile inland valleys and on the coastal footpaths offering spectacular clifftop views. It is also an area full of romance and history, with three ancient hill forts and the house and gardens of Forde Abbey all nearby.

A range of attractions is on offer in nearby country towns. Lyme Regis is a pretty seaside resort, its elegant colour-washed buildings and promenade lining a handsome harbour. Motor boats can be hired and there are fishing trips, a sailing school and a windsurfing school. Bridport is a thriving market town, featured on TV’s River Cottage, the Port Bredy of Hardy’s novels, offering a good choice of shops, inns, restaurants, an arts centre and a sports centre with indoor pool. The coastline is excellent for sea fishing and inland waters offer good coarse fishing. Golfers will find courses at Lyme Regis and West Bay and there is also horse riding nearby. Caterers are available locally. The local shop at Marshwood and two charming thatched country pubs are within a short drive.

The Lodge is a Colonial-style three bedroom, three bathroom single storey detached cottage. The bedrooms offer Heals beds with the finest Egyptian 400tc cotton; the master bedroom a super king and two further bedrooms king size. Two bathrooms are en-suite and one is a family bathroom. The conservatory enjoys views over the garden and rural countryside and the generous veranda has a table for al fresco dining. Set in the grounds of Marshwood Manor and the idyll of rural West Dorset, The Lodge is situated in its own two acres of private garden. There is table tennis in the utility room and a games room is available in the manor courtyard offering table football, pool, table tennis and a DVD lending collection.

Lovely cottage set in 2 private acres withing the grounds of Marshwood Manor
average rating of 4.75 based on 4 reviews

Absolutely lovely house! Perfect for an escape.

  • 5 of 5

Just spent a few days in this lovely, warm, comfortable home. Only 15 minutes from Lyme Regis and other beaches but peaceful, quiet and very rural. Beds are big, kitchen well equipped and lounge and conservatory great for reading and a glass or two of wine. All on one level so perfect for older members. We even managed to sit out on the fabulous deck in November. Would recommend it most highly and hope to go back!

A large welcoming house in a fabulous location

  • 5 of 5

Despite being in the extensive grounds of the Manor the house is completely private and has its own very large garden and drive. This was our first trip as a family of 3 couples, 1 toddler and 2 very large boisterous dogs so we were concerned that there wouldn't be enough room for all of us. Granted the weather was kind which meant that we could take advantage of the outside space but the inside was capacious enough for us all. The owners really are dog friendly and even managed to laugh at the damage caused to a door by one of the dogs. We'll carry the shame of that to our graves.

The area is beautiful with plentiful walks in the immediate vicinity and further afield. The Jurassic Coast, Lyme Regis and Bridport (great Waitrose there) are nearby with some wonderful beaches. If you bring dogs remember to check that they can use the beach you're heading for. There are severe restrictions particularly during the summer months.

The house is well equipped. The rooms are light and comfortable. There's a large outside sheltered table that we used for every meal. A high chair and cit are provided. There's a barbecue which we used and there's table tennis and various games in the garage.

We had a great week.
