Welcome to pristine, private Upper Holmes Lake in the center of Iron County. This Lodge was totally updated in 2014 with your Family 'Vacation Satisfaction' as its goal. The front 1/2 of the Lodge is a combination kitchen, dining room and living room with big windows to the lake. The deck is 12' wide across the entire front of the Lodge and includes a picnic table and chairs and a new gas grill. The back half of the Lodge contains a big bathroom, and 2 big bedrooms. One bedroom overlooks the lake, is very private and contains one double bed, a big mirrored dresser and matching sitting bench. The second bedroom contains a set of double bed bunks and a set of single bed bunks. The living room couch also folds out to provide a double bed. The maximum number of guests is limited to six people. The private lake provides swimming, boating and good panfishing with an occasional bass, pike or walleye. This lake is home to beaver, otter, loons, songbirds and nearby nesting bald eagles. Deer, bear and grouse are abundant and a moose occasionally visits the lake. A firepit with adjustable hanging grill is in the yard and firewood is supplied for your hotdogs, s'mores and relaxation. This cabin and its private acreage, on a private lake, allow you to reconnect with nature and enjoy the convenience of a small town only minutes away. We encourage long term stays and will consider reducing the rates for periods over 30 days. The owners private 100 acres is for your recreational use. Private trails and scenic vistas are included on this acreage. From olookout bluff you can see Crystal Falls 5 miles away as you look out over the Paint river valley. Take your lunch and cell phone/computer along. A picnic table is provided and 4G service is almost guaranteed atop the scenic outlook. Also, the Lodge has a full basement with entry door located under the deck. The basement becomes very useful during periods of inclement weather. The electrical power for the lodge is supplied via a new solar system professionally installed summer 2016. After dark guests are encouraged to utilize the propane gas lights in the living area of the Lodge. The ambience provided by these lights reflecting off the natural pine finish of the walls creates a unique experience. Some couples have said it has a romantic effect. If the atmospheric conditions are suitable after dark, outside, you may enjoy viewing the Northern Lights. If you are a railroad train lover--listen for the 'TRAIN WHISTLE' then go to a location where you can see the North end of the Lake. A RR trestle runs across the Lake and trains use this track everyday.
While there are great trails for ATVs and ORVs nearby, these vehicles are not permitted on property itself.
We have owned some of the adjoining acres and lake frontage for 25 years as a part of our nearby 600 plus acres, which is a Certified Tree Farm. Ownership of this property was a natural fit with our other farming and family interests. Our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren encouraged us to purchase and update the cabin and rent it out to others who can appreciate all the comforts of home in an off-the-grid private, natural lakeside environment. The kids and grandkids have already made future reservations to insure that the great grandkids can experience this natural environment as they grow up. The grandkids must think this is a magical site as they annually travel from Arizona, Colorado, South Carolina and Indiana to spend their vacation time, even if grandpa and grandma are not in Michigan. We live nearby and will assist renters in any way we can.
David Young purchased this lodge in 2014
The opportunity to purchase this property fulfilled our dream of owning this very private 100 acres with 2000 feet of lake frontage along with this Lodge and a second cozy Cabin (vrbo #509589) in a very pristine, natural environment. A private boat launch, dock and swimming area is available. The boat launch won't support boats over 14' long. The Lodge has 1200 sq. ft. of space on the main floor and a full walk out basement. This Lodge is centrally located in the Western U.P. which allows day trips to the Porcupine MTS., Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and many other historical sites. World class trout fishing rivers/streams are minutes away. THE huge Michigamme reservoir is 5 minutes away and includes wilderness boating/fishing and a boat launch.
There is high probability that, during your stay on this property, you will not see another person. In season, you may be able to pick your own mushrooms, strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries. Organically grown fruits and vegetables are available to purchase in town. It's possible that you may see a bald eagle fishing for its dinner on the lake and loons swimming with their babies. We encourage stays of a month or more and will consider modifying the rate for stays over 30 days.
The guests said, keep the refundable fee monies as deposit for our stay next year. Only next year we are staying two weeks. Our group is very satisfied with the lodge and its private lake and acreage.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this property and plan to return as soon as possible. We hiked, hunted, fished and loved the privacy. The lodge is sparking clean and everything is provided. We enjoyed eating fresh fish and partridge. We saw deer, bear, eagles and heard the coyotes/wolves. The owners respected our privacy and even allowed us to archery hunt deer in an enclosed baited blind. We wanted a secluded/wilderness honeymoon with all the amenities and we were completely satisified.
I thoroughly enjoyed the stay and hope to go back next year. Dave Young was extremely helpful and the lake was gorgeous. My wife and three kids and I had a great time. Everyone caught a fish.
Our family recently stayed here for a week and were so taken aback by how wonderful the cabin and surrounding area were! We were able to hear the whippoorwills at night and even heard the wolves howling! The place was sparkling clean and being a fully stocked house makes it easy to prepare meals and have a place big enough for the whole family to enjoy. There are also so many scenic trips to take and everything in the area is full of breathtaking sights. The lake is also very nice and the fish are plentiful! We will definitely be trying to come back as soon as possible!
We recently stayed at the Lodge with our children and grandchildren and had a WONDERFUL time!! If you are looking for privacy and seclusion to get away and relax for a while, this is definitely the spot to do it! We were all very comfortable in the cabin -- there was plenty of room for all of us to stretch out. The owners were very accommodating and helpful for anything we might need. We fished every day both in the boat that is available and from the dock. The kids had a great time throwing their lines in down on the dock and caught quite a few different kinds of fish. There was even a bald eagle that flew from tree to tree right over top of us! It sure is an awesome sight to see that majestic bird!!! We also heard whippoorwills talking to each other right outside of the cabin. We took advantage of both the grill that is furnished and the cooking grate that hangs over the fire pit and had some delicious meals! It is a very short drive into Crystal Falls, which is the nearest town. We did some shopping at Ben Franklin and ate at Fob's Fine Food a couple of times (which is a must-do when you are there!) and also got lunch & ice cream at Sommers Sausage Shop & Grocery (don't let their name fool you -- they have a menu with quite a variety of sandwiches, fries, etc. and of course the desserts!). We enjoyed our vacation so much and definitely plan on going back to spend some more time there in the future!!!
This place totally blew us away! It is simply incredible! The cabin is neat, clean, and in such a beautiful setting. The fish were plentiful, and we were immersed in nature. Everything was in working order in the cabin. The sleeping quarters were cozy and homey. The kitchen area and living room were very nicely furnished. The owners were very pleasant, communicate well, and were always a text away if we needed anything. You can tell that they put a lot of time into making this place what it is. When we arrived, they showed us how everything operated in the cabin, asked us if we needed anything further, and left us alone with nature. The place is extremely private and relaxing. We were so impressed, and will definitely be returning some day. It was a great vacation!
