Overview

About the property

2000 Sq. foot home with 2 bedrooms, bonus room with sleeper, and 1.5 baths.

Located in a rural development 12 mi. south of Prineville, 5 mi. north of the popular Prineville Reservoir State Park, this home offers 2 bedrooms, a bonus room with sleeper sofa, 1.5 baths, 2 balconies, a patio, grill, and views from every window.

We built this two story, Cascade view home from our own design in order to maximize views. It sits on 5.5 acres of high desert landscape (mostly sage, juniper, and rabbit brush) and has views of Mt. Bachelor, the Three Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, and the profile of Smith Rock. Sunrises, sunsets, storms, and star-gazing can be spectacular.

Ample shade in the junipers behind the house provides a relaxing oasis after a day at the rodeo, the lake, or hiking and exploring. Picnic table and hammocks are available for this area.

The patio under the pergola has patio tables and chairs as well as a propane fire pit.

In the grass adjacent to the patio, there is a lovely porch swing, and it too has mountain views.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A LOW WATER USE AREA. We have a deep desert well that requires active water conservation. We ask that guests be conscientious about water use during their stay.

The house is not really appropriate for very young children. The window blinds, second story windows, kitchen cabinets, and electrical outlets do not have child-safety mechanisms. Second story balconies have inherent risks. The west side retaining wall with cactus is, well, a jumble of basalt with cactus ;-).

This is a great place for travelers with pets, but we do ask that you spend some extra time vacuuming, sweeping, and picking up after your pet outside. We cut the lawn bordering the house, etc., so poop pick up is much appreciated.

About Marylynne Diggs

Teacher, writer, photographer enjoying life on both sides of the Cascades.

Marylynne Diggs purchased this house in 2007

Why Marylynne Diggs chose Prineville

We searched for years to find the best weather and views on the east side of the Cascades, and this fit the bill. It gets less snow and rain than Bend, and you can see Mt. Bachelor, Broken Top, the Three Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, and the profile of Smith Rock from the house and patio.

We bought bare land with an ancient trailer and saved for years to build the custom home. It is oriented for passive solar efficiency and to maximize views from every room.

The remote location makes this a nice, quiet get away with fabulous, unobstructed views of the Cascades. However, its distance from Prineville (20 minutes) and Bend (about an hour), make it more suitable for those interested in exploring the Painted Hills, Smith Rock, and Prineville Reservoir than for those wanting to enjoy the Bend and Redmond area.

What makes this house unique

You will love the mountain views, sunsets and sunrises, and star-gazing. Storms too can be spectacular as you watch from their dry eastern edge. Deer and coyotes occasionally pass through the property. Mountain bluebirds, Western Kingbirds, and Ash-throated Flycatchers are plentiful.

The house is located in a rural development 20 minutes south of Prineville, a town of 10,000. The house has good access to the following:

Prineville Reservoir State Park

Smith Rock

Painted Hills National Monument

Ochoco Mountains

Crooked River

The house is far enough out of town to feel like a high desert retreat, but Prineville is just 20 minutes away, so you still have access to restaurants, golf, theaters, grocery stores, and a hospital.

The home was wonderful and provided the perfect setting to visit with our Son's family who live in Prinville. We did some site seeing, and fished, did some more site seeing and eating and fished. Very relaxing peaceful location. Home is very well equipped. It was a great experience!! Thanks Marylynne.

When House Hunting Became More Like a Vacation

  • 5 of 5

The Cascade View Home was a very pleasant place to stay while I was hunting for a new home in Oregon. It was a home away from home. The area was very quiet where I could enjoy my solitude. And one of my favorite spots at this well-cared-for vacation home was the west side porch area where I could enjoy the beautiful sunsets and quietude of it all. I highly recommend this place.

Fantastic house!

Great place to spend a vacation!

The house is fully equipped, very clean and spacious. The direct view from the veranda on the Three Sisters mountains is magnificent. It is a very quiet place and we loved the silence in the evenings.

We used the place as a starting point to our trips to the Painted Hills, Sheep Rock and Smith Rock State Park.

Fantastic High Desert Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This wonderful home outside Prineville is a perfect base for exploring the Oregon high desert. It is beautifully designed and decorated, and fully fitted out for a lengthy stay. The kitchen has everything you need for cooking (one of my pet peeves with vacation rentals is a poorly equipped kitchen) and there are plenty of quality linens and other household supplies. The rural environment is quiet and pleasant and the promised views of the Cascades is stunning. Marylynne provides extensive instructions for all household operations and a helpful listing of nearby restaurants, services and attractions. This is an excellent base for visiting Smith Rock State Park and the John Day sites.

Fabulous home with incredible views!

  • 5 of 5

Cascade View Home was the perfect location to connect with an old friend and get some much needed rest and relaxation. Loved sitting on the porch in the evening with a warm breeze blowing, drinking a cold beer and watching the sunset. Star gazing was amazing once the sun went down.

Nice home, well stocked and more then expected!

  • 5 of 5

This home is like new! It has all of the comforts of home! It was cold the first night and when I went to make a fire in the wood stove their was already kindling and paper ready to light. The fire was ready in seconds! The internet is adequate, the outdoor fireplace and BBQ is new! I love the wood floors and the home décor as it makes you feel as if you are in a cabin!

We were very comfortable there and enjoyed our stay as we spend time at the Prineville Reservoir. The directions to the house was excellent and every detail to get there was described!!

Thank you for a great stay! I would highly recommend this home to anyone staying in the area.

Please note the three day minimum stay off season and four day minimum summer. If you want to stay for less than the minimum days, you can do so by paying the the full minimum day rental day and leaving early. I recommend placing that "extra" day at the end of your stay in case you have a change of heart and want to extend by one day and make full use of your rented time. Sometimes we all just need that extra mental health day, right?
