Not quite as described

  • 3 of 5

We arrived on a rainy Sat night and couldn't find the key. It was located at the side of the house on an antenna tower. We looked all around in the dark. The cottage said air conditioning, but it is only a unit in the upstairs family room. The bedrooms were very warm for sleeping. It is really a three bedroom, two bathroom cottage. There is an original small cottage on the premise that had the bathroom remodeled, hence the 4th bathroom/bedrooms (2). Not really where you would want to be. Kitchen was remodeled nicely. Adequate utensils. Bought a firestarter for the outdoor firepit, which we left for the next person. Beds were adequate, could use new sheets and mattress protector on them, as a couple were stained. The TV was not working when we arrived. Got it up and running, after some fiddling. Internet, as expected in cottage country is spotty, but ok as we were on vacation. The water is only about 2 1/2 feet deep at the end of the dock. We had rented a pontoon boat, but could not bring it up to the dock as intended. We had to go back and forth to the marina to use it. Not totally a problem, just to let someone know in case they were looking to do this. Wood was provided for the firepit, which we enjoyed every night. The sunsets are amazing. We were a little concerned about the deck right out the family room as in dire need of replacement. That was the only access to the dock.. There was construction right next door, which the owner let us know about. Not terrible but a couple days of constant hammering. We were excited to use the paddle boat. It was on the property when we arrived. It took quite a feat to get it into the water, as very heavy. The propeller was not working, so fixed it the best we could. It probably hadn't been used in a while. Maybe docking it and locking it might have worked. These of course are little things, but the cost for a week's stay was $5,000 Canadian, not inexpensive, but not quite as imagined as pictures led us to believe. The cottage is up for sale, and we even entertained a showing while we were there for the week. We gathered up and tidied up and left so they could view the cottage. Overall, great to get away from the heat and enjoy the Ontario weather, but cottage not quite as expected/pictured/described.
