The house is located in the beautiful oceanfront gated community of Kapoho Beach, home of the world famous thermal Champagne Ponds. The home is less than two-minutes walk to Kapoho Bay and the Pacific Ocean, as well as only a five-minute walk to Champagne Ponds. Sunny Kapoho Bay is at the eastern most point of the Big Island in a local rain shadow.

Swim in the swimming pool under palm trees! Watch your kids from the dining lanai while they play in the pool. Outdoor shower!

The kitchen is fully stocked with all new gadgets such as blender, microwave, food processor, coffee maker, toaster, all stainless-steel appliances, fridge with ice maker.

The main living/dining room area incorporates an oversized lanai with dining for eight. The outdoor sitting area overlooks the pool and back yard. The indoor living room features a large flat-panel tv. The open concept offers enough space for children to run around and play.

The house has a 3rd floor lanai with stunning ocean views. Watch the sunrise over the ocean while you sip your morning coffee. In the evening, watch the moon rise while you prepare cocktails in the 3rd floor wet bar.

The main floor has two bedrooms (1 king & 1 queen) and two full bathrooms, the first floor has a family room, and two bedrooms (1 queen & 2 bunks) and one full bathroom.

The house is perfect for large family get-togethers. Enjoy the leisurely pace of Kapoho Beach, visit the near-by Waipio Tidal Pools for snorkeling, swim in the Alahanui State Park hot springs, drive to the end of the red road along the Puna coast to Kalapana and Uncle Roberts (the local farmer's market and Hawaiian treasure). Have dinner in quirky Pahoa and see the latest lava flow (600' from town). The house allows for separation between old and young - the teenagers will enjoy the large flat-screen tv in the family room (internet and cable). Adults will enjoy the dining deck and the tranquil 3rd floor lanai with stunning ocean views.

About Sarang Joshi

We are professors at a large metropolitan state university on the main land. We have two lively boys who enjoy spending the summers in care-free rural Hawaii. We love spending time together away from the hustle and bustle of urban living.

Sarang Joshi purchased this house in 2014

Why Sarang Joshi chose Kapoho

We first came to Hawaii in 1999 and fell in love with the Big Island. We joked that it's the best place to buy land since it's the only place where land actually grows. After visiting the Big Island for years, we found our dream spot in Kapoho Beach, the sunniest spot on the green and lush East side of the island. We moved fast to buy land and build our vacation house.

What makes this house unique

We designed the house with inside-outside living in mind. The floor plan maximizes entertaining opportunities. The dinning lanai on the back of the house overlooks the pool while the third floor lanai offers great vistas of Kapoho Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

Great fit for our family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at Hale Mahina (Moon House) with our family of 6, plus an Auntie and 2 cousins. Once again, we so enjoyed our time in your beautiful and well appointed home! The five teens love having the downstairs and the pool and we adults are happy upstairs on one of the lanai (porches)having coffee or cocktails. We enjoyed plenty of great family time as well. We cooked meals and ate together in the modern kitchen, played games on the big lanai and daily walked the block or so to the warm champagne pond for swimming and snorkeling!

Pictures do not show how beautiful this property is!!

  • 5 of 5

This house is a perfect getaway for a couple or a group since there is a good seperation of space. The pool and backyard are wonderful. The only downside to this house is how far it is from stores or town, but if you want to be close to the ocean and not have a lot of tourists around then it is still perfect. My husband and I loved staying here. You should know that it rains A LOT here. This is not the sunny side of the island. There were 2 days out of 8 that it was sunny for more than an hour, but we still were able to enjoy the pool almost everyday so it didnt bother is to much.

Beautiful clean home!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five (3 adult kids) enjoyed this beautiful new home! The location is ideal for swimming in Champagne Pond and the Kapoho Tidepools. The Champagne Pond was a 5 min walk and the Kapoho Tidepools were a 4-5 min drive from the house. We arrived at night because we were captivated by Hawaii's sights around the island on our way. The directions are good and we found our way without problems. It is a good 30 min+ drive from Hilo and 1 hr from Volcano Nat'l Park. The home was very clean. The design is amazing with numerous windows, ocean view from the front balcony, and fans to keep cool. The beds were very comfortable. There were a few bugs (of all kinds) - inside and out - as we expected in the Hawaiian jungle. Sarang was sincere and very responsive to the few questions we had during our stay. The pool appeared beautiful with an enchanting water feature although we chose to swim in the ocean instead. The second floor lanai (opening into the main second floor and kitchen) was delightful - even in the rain! We would definitely stay here again!

Great property in a great location

  • 5 of 5

I won't use any fluff, and just tell you the things you want to know if you're looking at renting a place in Kapoho:

1) House is clean - all tile floors, with lots of windows to capture that sea breeze. There is no AC in the house but there rarely is in Kapoho. It was a non-issue on every day except for one when it was pretty hot and the fans weren't cutting it.. but:

2) The pool is nice. It can be cold after a storm because it's non-heated as far as we could tell. We chose the location because of the pool actually, as the tidepools are slippery to get into usually, of questionable water quality, and we were traveling with an infant.

3) The house has 2 sections that aren't accessible to each other. The bottom floor has two bedrooms (1 queen, 2 sets of bunks), a bar (mini fridge), laundry/full bath, and an area to watch TV. It is on the same level as the pool. The main house is the second and third floor - full kitchen, two bedrooms/baths, and an awesome lanai.

4) To me the selling point of the house is the second floor - the lanai doors can completely open up and make it feel like you're outside even while cooking in the kitchen.

5) The third floor lanai is great for stargazing and watching the sunset. I would strongly recommend not eating there. The roof of the house connects to this lanai which makes it vulnerable to rodents (unlike 2nd floor lanai). Rodents are just a fact of life in Kapoho - but leaving crumbs, etc. up there is just asking for trouble as the critters like to live in the palms - many of which overhang the roof. There are metal bars on many of the trees to prevent them but you can't be too careful.

Location wise, it's right where you want to be in Kapoho. Close to several access points to the champagne ponds / tide pools.

When we arrived, we found the TV was busted - only showed red lines. We called Sarang and he ordered a new TV right then and there, and it was installed while we were staying there, allowing us to watch some Olympics while we were in the house :) Very responsive and attentive owners.

Having stayed in 4 separate houses in this neighbourhood, this one has been our favorite.

Beautiful but buggy

  • 3 of 5

We arrived in the evening after dark. The lights were all on but no fans running. There were lots of small black bugs by the lights, particularly on the 3rd floor (many dead on the floor) and outdoor seat area. Bugs (several small cockroaches and some other small bugs) were also present in the kitchen area - opening drawers was a little scary. By the morning, we were able to knock down any of the small black buggers and swept up, and with the fans running and lights off the next evening noticed far fewer of them. The kitchen area was a daily issue though, even though we were careful to keep food in the fridge/sealed (we were more worried about fire ants being a problem and we didn’t see any in the house). It seems the cleaning was lacking. I might have thought it was just normal for that side of the island, but we spoke with others staying in the same community who said they really hadn’t seen any bugs. We also let the owners know that the downstairs smelled heavily of what seemed to be cigar smoke when we arrived. Luckily, no evidence of the rat mentioned by a previous reviewer!

So, the first impression was pretty lousy, but it definitely grew on us. The indoor/outdoor dining is lovely, third floor view is beautiful, the pool was clean and refreshing, beds comfy, and location perfect for the champagne ponds (our toddler was thrilled to have warmer water than we’d found on the Kona side to play in). We enjoyed a couple of meals at Kaleos in Pahoa, and the cinnamon rolls and lunch specials at Cajun Paradise Farms just down the road were great. It’s an interesting area to explore - about an hour from the volcano and 45 minutes from Hilo.

Owner's Response: We have been resistant to have the property routinely sprayed with insecticides to avoid poisoning the bountiful natural environment. We now use environmentally friendly local pest control to minimize the bug infestation. Given the tropical climate of Hawaii some insects are unavoidable. We do not have mosquitoes. Sometimes depending on the climate, we sometimes have harmless flying bugs swarming at night which is unavoidable.

Really enjoyed this place.

Great house in this area. We would stay again. Walk to champagne pond. Close to warm pond and tide pools, black sand beach and kalapana where the lava ends. Great base camp for sure. Aloha to the owners! Try and find the coconut crew and get some samples!
