About Richard Thomas
Torbay is our first step towards escaping London life to somewhere that combines the benefits of beautiful countryside and sea, enabling us to enjoy boating, walking, theatre, history and numerous events that are held locally throughout the year.
Richard Thomas purchased this Cottage in 2014
Why Richard Thomas chose Torquay City Centre
The Laurels captures the elegance and grandeur of the Victorian era. It is situated within walking distance to all amenities but enjoys tranquillity, fresh air and convenient access to business and holiday locations. I bought The Laurels and Laurel Cottage with plans to restore the main house to its full glory over the coming years. In 2015 Laurel Cottage was completely refurbished and is maintained to the highest standard to ensure visitors have the best experience during their stay. For Xmas, to ensure guests enjoy the festive season, the lounge has a Xmas tree and decorations to ensure the occasion can be properly celebrated away from home. Torbay hosts a variety of events throughout the year and offers recreational and cultural facilities that cater for diverse interests of all ages.
What makes this Cottage unique
All interests are catered for within easy striking distance of Laurel Cottage. Access is good with motorway, train and air services enabling quick travel for either holiday makers or business travellers. Once here, you cannot fail to appreciate the good quality air, the relaxing tranquil location and the numerous amenities close to hand whilst enjoying the well equipped and maintained Cottage as a base.

Laurel Cottage has been prepared to the highest standard to ensure that our customers enjoy their stay in a clean, comfortable and well equipped environment. To ensure that we are able to maintain this standard for all of our guests we ask that you respect some basic house rules. Pets are not allowed on carpeted areas, furniture and beds. If left unattended they must be caged and due consideration given to avoid disturbing neighbours (e.g. barking). The Owner must be notified if a pet is under 3 years old prior to booking confirmation. A maximum of 2 medium sized pets is permissible. More than this needs written confirmation of acceptance by The Owner in advance of arrival. The Laurels, adjacent to Laurel Cottage, is private and not for the use of guests unless invited. Any places that are sign posted as 'no go' areas must be respected for your own health and safety. Children under the age of 16 must be in the custody of an adult. Ball games are not permitted. This includes outdoors to avoid damage to vehicles and property. Smoking is not permitted anywhere at The Laurels and Laurel Cottage. Damage to the property (including marks to paintwork), fixtures, fittings and contents are to be reported to the owner and rectified by financial compensation or new replacement by the guest immediately. Please be careful when carrying cases upstairs and ferrying belongings in and out of the property. Laurel Cottage has a washing machine and is equipped with both a drying horse (kept under the stairs) as well as washing lines and clothes pegs found between Laurel Cottage and the boundary flint wall. Residents are requested to use these in preference to hanging clothes over radiators and furniture. Offensive language and behaviour has zero tolerance. You will be evicted from the property without re-imbursement if the owner or a designated custodian finds disturbance to be unacceptable. Laurel Cottage is situated in one of the more desirable and secluded areas of Torbay and tranquility is one advantage. Visitors are required to recognise an 11:00 p.m. deadline for noisy activity. The Owner's word is final in the event of a disagreement. Beach towels are not provided. Keys to the property must be returned when leaving, either replacing them in the key safe or posting them through the front door after locking the property.
100% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date. 50% refund if canceled at least 14 days before arrival date.
I spent 9 weeks at Richard and Joanna’s cottage whilst working away from home, and I can honestly say it was wonderful. Clean, comfortable and it had everything I needed - a real home from home. It’s close to all the amenities Torquay has to offer, and the walk into town is not too arduous. Since I was working I didn’t use many of the restaurants, and the kitchen facilities were wonderful. The smart tv was a bonus allowing access to my Netflix account and Richard made sure that the WiFi was always available even after a problem with his provider. I sincerely hope to spend some actual holiday time there next year, and if I ever have to work in the area again, Laurel Cottage would be my first port of call.
Thank you Elaine, it has been a pleasure having you stay with us and we hope to see you again. Thank you for looking after Laurel Cottage so well.
The cottage was every thing anyone could want, Richard & Joanne we very friendly and extremely help full, very highly recommended
Thank you Graham, we are delighted that you enjoyed staying at our cottage and it was a pleasure to meet you both. Please come and see us again.
We were looking for a quite secluded property, but still near to the tow center amenities. With Laurel cottage we got more than what we expected. The owners were very helpful and VERY respectful of our privacy.
Once we got used to the steep walk back (we got it down to 15 minutes by the end) it was the perfect break for us. The property itself was immaculate and exactly as described and the bottle of wine was a really nice touch.
Thank you for such a positive review Ian & Beth, we are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and would love to see you again.
Off road parking, in a very scenic location. Perfect location for walking into Torquay Centre, (some people may struggle with the return journey if they are not used to hills).
The cottage was very clean and the bedrooms were very spacious with lots of storage. We felt the downstairs was a bit too cramped for a family of 4.
We are disappointed with the 3 star rating especially since we pride ourselves on the cleanliness and comfort that we provide for our guests, which you acknowledge. The size of the property is stated on the HomeAway web site and pictures of the property give an excellent representation of the property dimensions. Of the many families that have stayed with us you are the only ones to have made a cramped comment. Regarding your reference to hills, Torquay is famous for the backdrop of its seven hills, which are well publicised and normally we do not find it to be a problem. Still, we do hope that you have enjoyed your holiday and that perhaps you will choose to stay with us again.
The property was well kept , fresh, clean and private. It has everything you could need for a quiet and relaxing stay with a pleasant outside enclosed garden sitting area and good private parking.
Thank you Ray & Liz, we really enjoyed meeting you and are very pleased that you found our cottage up to scratch. We hope to see you again, preferably when the sun is out! Kind Regards, Richard & Joanna
Had an excellent stay in a very clean and comfortable cottage. Close to town, restaurants and the harbour so an ideal base to explore Torquay and the surrounding area.
Thank you for looking after our cottage and for your positive review Matt. We are pleased to hear your trip to Torquay went well and hope to see you all again.
