Overview

About the property

Large eclectic cabin approximately 1850 square feet, 3 bedrooms and loft.

A perfect get away for families and friends who want to enjoy being outdoors. Our cabin is located on 6 acres of land at the end of a long gravel road. 4-wheel drive is recommended, especially during the winter months. The house is a beautiful and rustic cabin unlike any other since it was custom built by the original owner, who was both a stone mason and carpenter. We have 2 neighbors on our road, so lots of privacy. We love that our cabin is not fancy, it just feels like home. We have a barn that can serves as studio space (please request set up), an outdoor picnic area with a brick fire place where we enjoy most of our dinners. The kitchen is well equipped and there is plenty of room for folks to hang out. We have 3 bedrooms, a loft (kids love it), and a sleeping porch to be used in warmer weather. Our home can sleep up to 8 people comfortably. Boone and Valle Crusis are both approximately 8 miles away. We are 30 minutes from most high country ski resorts and there is plenty of hiking right outside our door. Sugar Grove is our neighboring community, where a summer bluegrass festival is held. There is plenty to do in the Blue Ridge mountains and our home is the perfect place to come home to, to relax with friends and family. Pets are welcome. The driveway to our cabin is steep, 4 wheel drive recommended.

The layout of the house:

411 Indigo is nestled on the top of a hill surrounded by trees, overlooking a beautiful valley. There are 3 floors including the basement where one bedroom is located. On the second floor their is a bedroom, large kitchen with dining nook, dining room, and sunroom. On the top floor is a large living space where you can enjoy a movie, sit in a window seat curled up with a book, sit by a wood stove or enjoy the view from the front window overlooking the valley below. There are lots of windows on all sides. Above this room is a small loft with a double bed. Access to this loft is by ladder which is permanently attached. There is no air-conditioner, and we have not needed one.

We have oil heat which works great and a wood stove on the main floor. The kitchen is nestled in the middle of the home and for some reason the original owner/builder did not put vents for heat. We have two electric heaters that work fine and keep the kitchen warm. During the winter months and possible snow, 4 wheel drive is highly recommended.

About Beth Lake

We purchased our mountain home when our 2 older boys attended ASU. Since then we have fallen in love with the area and especially our home on Indigo Rd. We hope one day to live in Vilas year round. My husband and I live in Raleigh NC where we both work as educators. We enjoy city life with our youngest son and 3 large dogs. Getting away to our home in Vilas is what we enjoy the most.

Beth Lake purchased this house in 2009

Why Beth Lake chose Vilas

The blueridge moutains have always felt like home to us since we were young.

We love to backpack, ski, climb, and simply enjoy all the wonders this area has to offer.

What makes this house unique

Great rustic getaway for family and friends who love the outdoors.

better than the pictures. Beautiful property and all the comforts of home and more!

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect place for our whole family including the dog and grandma. Just enough room for everyone to spread out, but cozy enough to feel right at home. The unique floor plan is very well decorated with plenty of comfortable places to sit and relax. The sleeping loft over the upstairs living area is a perfect kid cubby which makes bedtime easy when dealing with a three-year-old. The outside gazebos and decks are great for taking in the beautiful property. Cool and funky art and decor make it all the more interesting. Also, being just outside of Boone and Blowing Rock is convenient while still having plenty of room and quiet to relax after playing hard all day. We Love to cook and this place had the perfect kitchen and grilling area with all the right stuff for making meals easy while still relaxing in the scenery.

We've stayed in quite a few different places over the years and this one is definitely worth revisiting.

An eclectic, artistic quiet retreat

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful pieced home with quiet nooks and crannies. I refer it to the Weasley Burrow. Our family enjoyed time outside in the cooking area, walking in the woods and there was enough space inside to have privacy.

Wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

Great place to stay and unwind. The cabin is very unique and very cozy. We had such a great time walking the hills, visiting the local cows and seeing deer in the fields in the mornings. We went skiing at App Mtn and Beech Mtn and not a bad drive to either place. We hope to be back again!

Charming!

  • 5 of 5

This has to be one of the most interesting houses we've ever stayed at using VRBO. Everywhere you look, there's detail - in the form of woodwork, stonework, decor, painting, built-ins - it's just fascinating. The builder obviously put a lot of care and love into this house.

We stayed Christmas weekend and there was plenty of room for our family of five. We made use of the library, hiked up the slope behind the house, and did lots of cooking in the well stocked kitchen. We used the outdoor fireplace too on one of the milder nights.

It got really cold while we were there, but the house stayed warm and comfortable. There were plenty of blankets and throws for cozying up to read a book or watch tv. We had a very enjoyable stay and Beth was wonderful to work with. I'd love to come back in the summer and see the flowers in bloom!

A beautiful home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We had an incredible time in Boone and a lot of it had to do with this beautiful home. The pictures just simply do not do it justice. The home is one of a kind, each floor filled with exquisite art and original pieces of furniture. We had a blast looking at all the beautiful decorations in the home and finding new doors all over the place that would lead to other living spaces and even a greenhouse. There is plenty of space for the whole family but also so cozy as we would sit around by one of the many fires, inside and out. Every morning we would walk the grounds with the dogs and enjoy the sunshine as it peaked over the mountain. We enjoyed the outdoor eating area and fireplace as we roasted marshmallows and hotdogs for hours with conversation. The kitchen had everything you could ask for and made dining in a breeze.

This home is so close to town and any exploring you could want to do, we were very happy with how close we still were to Grandfather Mountain and the Mast General Store, some of our favorite places to go when we visit Boone. The owner responded to any questions immediately and was very helpful in providing information about the home before we arrived also. Thank you for providing such a wonderful place to stay, we greatly enjoyed it and cannot wait to come back!!

This quaint and unique cabin was a great fit for our family! The decor was inviting and we felt at home as soon as we walked in. We enjoyed the wood stove as well as the cozy kitchen. It was clean and well-maintained. If anyone wanted quiet time there are cozy nooks to enjoy! We will return and look forward to our next visit!!

Our home is a beautiful and rustic cabin unlike any other since it was custom built by the original owner, who was both a stone mason and carpenter. We find each stay at our home a true privilege and hope you do the same! Below, you will find some helpful information regarding the property as well as recommended ideas for the surrounding area.Driveway and Parking
The house is located at the end of a gravel road and sits perched up above a small valley. It is a beautiful location, but also involves a steep driveway and limited parking.

From highway 421, start on Vanderpool Road and continue to Cove Creek Elementary School. Turn right at the school to stay on Vanderpool Road. You will go through a short section of tight turns until you see Indigo Rd on your right by some mailboxes. Turn right onto the right-most gravel driveway. Follow this gravel road, stay right when you get to the fork. Continue straight as the road winds left and then right. You will then see the house on the hill backed up into the woods. In order to get up the driveway, you will need to give your car a good amount of gas to easily get up the steeper grade.

There are four parking options. The first is at the very top of the driveway immediately beyond the house on the left. To access this spot, simply accelerate all the way to the top and turn to the left above the fence. (To exit, you can reverse back and right in order to turn around via 3-point turn). The next two options are either in front of the house on the left side of the driveway or above the covered eating area to the right side of the driveway. For both of these spots, we find it easiest to accelerate above the spot, then back into it. The final parking option is in the barn, which you will pass at the start of the driveway on the right- park in this as you would a carport. This is the best option for vehicles having difficulty getting up the driveway.

There are a couple of hikes both up the ridge and down the driveway.
