About the property

Sleeps 10 - 3 bedrooms plus sleeping porch and pull out sofabed and 2.5 baths

Your historic waterfront getaway has 3 acres with more than 350 feet of rip rapped waterfront, sunrises over the Honga River and unobstructed sunsets over the Chesapeake Bay! Discover 'Hoopers Hill'!

Your private beach is one of the best places to collect sea glass on the island. What kind of art or craft do you want to plan for! Or a driftwood wall hanging! You might find an arrowhead, fossil or lost treasure!

Your vacation could include crabbing, oystering, fishing, going for a long run or bike ride, relaxing by the private beach, kayaking (2 singles and 1 double), playing a game of soccer, Frisbee or football, getting energy out on the trampoline, reading a good book in a hammock, making your own crab cakes (lump crab + mayo + Ritz crackers + Old Bay = YUM), having a delicious meal at Old Salty’s (oldsaltys.com), grilling the day’s catch, playing a good board game, catching up on movies, campfires and ghost stories under a starry sky, or just unplugging to catch up with family and friends.

Fresh crab is available from 6 picking houses in Fishing Creek (seafood.maryland.gov/crab-and-oyster-processing-facilities/). Just call before heading over to arrange for an order of fresh or steamed crabs, or lump/backfin meat by the pound!

Do you have kids or are you a kid at heart? You will love the children’s playhouse made from a hollowed out mature juniper! If you are asked for the entry password, try ‘Hoopers Hill’…

Day trips to the Blackwater Nature Preserve (fws.gov/blackwater), the Harriett Tubman Visitors Center (nps.gov/hatu, newly opened!), Barren Island Oyster Company (barrenislandoysters.com), Hooper’s Island Oyster Aquaculture Company (cgoysters.com), and Historic Cambridge are great, and local charters, including Sawyers Charters (sawyercharters.com) and Hoopers Island Expeditions (hiexped.com), are musts.

Built in 1918, your house is ~3,000 sq/ft, beautifully preserved, newly updated and set in a traditional waterfront town. It has a gourmet kitchen with Bertazzoni and Kitchenaid appliances, a wainscoted study, ballroom sized living room, and formal dining room with antique glass chandelier. The master bedroom has a king bed with en suite bathroom. The upstairs hall bathroom is for the remaining two upstairs bedrooms (2 twins and a queen). The two main level sleeping areas include spring double futon in the sleeping porch and great queen pull out. The house comfortably sleeps 10 with plenty of space to move around. The 60" TV and DVD player in the great room of perfect for movie nights. The master bedroom also has a TV and DVD Player. Active mosquito control plan in place. WiFi is available for guests.

Why Gilles chose Fishing Creek

Our family loves unwinding at Hoopers Hill, whether it is fishing off the shoreline, picking pecans or persimmons, collecting sea glass or arrowheads on our beach, lounging in the sun, playing games outside or inside (booo, only if raining). We love to just take in all of the gorgeous views! We reconnect as a family in this idyllic place.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Quiet and traditional community. There is a general store and restaurant on the island. Stop in Cambridge on the way down to get groceries! Blackwater Nature Preserve is a great day trip. House has private beach on the Bay. Convenient to public boat dock and ramp too.

Double kayak, 2 single Kayaks, paddles and life jackets provided.

Other guest access:

BBQ grill

2 Adult Bikes

Birch, pecan and willow shade trees

If not swimming, kayaking or boating, the island is great for walking and bike riding.

No smoking or pets in house or on premises.

Use of fireplaces with owner permission.

Please be respectful in the home and to neighbors.

Treat it as you would your home!

Captivating Eastern Shore Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My sisters and I had a wonderful stay at Hoopers Hill. Can’t say enough about the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets that we saw from the front porch and the backyard each day. Our weather was glorious. We took some car rides around the area and were continually astounded at the natural beauty of the salt marshes and sea birds. This historic house certainly had plenty of room to spread out to read, reflect, and relax. Had a great lunch at Old Salty’s restaurant and learned all about soft shell crabs from a very friendly server. Neighbor Susan stopped by to say hi and we thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her and her husband, Carl. Great memories.

Great getaway!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our long weekend at Hoopers Hill. Susan is great. The house is beautiful, clean and well stocked with everything you need. And the scenery is stunning. There is a lot of room for everyone to spread out and enjoy. The kayaks on the bay were fun, the crab feast was delicious and the kids enjoyed the trampoline and the tire swing. The mosquitos were a bit unbearable but the weather has been wet -- just plan to wear bug spray constantly.

Wonderful place for a long weekend

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 days here and totally enjoyed our stay. It's a great place to get away, have beautiful views of the bay, take walks, look for herons & birds & especially relax. The house comes with 3 kayaks & some bicycles. Our grandchildren, 4 & 6, were with us. They loved the trampoline. We visited the Harriet Tubman Museum one day and had an excellent dinner at Old Salty's.

Great Maryland vacation house!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this property as an overflow house for my son's wedding 10 minutes away. The owners were fast to respond to any questions or concerns I had. The home is well equipped and nicely furnished. Although we spent most of the time at the venue for the weekend, our family found this home extremely comfortable and a great place to return to at the end of the night.

Wonderful Getaway - Experience the real Maryland!!

  • 5 of 5

Comfortable home, gorgeous surroundings, wonderful experience of Maryland the way it used to be. Home was well furnished and cozy. Kayaks a real bonus. Susan, there to help next door, was welcoming and helpful. Super relaxing, easy access to water and wildlife (Eagles, osprey, crabs). We've put this lovely home on our permanent wish list! Must go to Old Salty's up the road and Bistro Poplar in Cambridge.

Beautiful Property

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful house, it was the perfect peaceful getaway. The house was very spacious and welcoming. We loved the private beach and the kayaks were definitely a bonus. We ordered a bushel of crabs from Phillips, that were delivered to our door, the biggest bushel we have ever seen. The local general store has almost everything you need and Old Saltys has delicious food. The owners are wonderful and quick at answering questions and we thank them for a wonderful trip
