About Nils Kongshaug

I live in New York City and use the house on weekends and for summer vacations.

Nils Kongshaug purchased this house in 2008

Why Nils Kongshaug chose Hudson Valley

I chose the house for its privacy and its location near woods and water. Only afterward did I discover how wonderful the region was, with charming towns and the spectacular Shawangunk Mountains just a few miles away.

What makes this house unique

It's a small house, but with plenty of nooks indoors and out. Sit in a hammock under the wisteria, on the Adirondack chairs by the creek, or in front of either of the wood stoves if it's cool. There's even an outdoor fire-pit. Explore the Rondout River in the canoe, or go fly fishing (The Rondout is one of the best trout streams on the east coast.) There are private swimming holes a short walk from the house, or public swimming holes a short drive away. In winter, some of the best x-country skiing in the country is available in the Shawangunks, with miles of groomed trails. Downhill resorts are an hour away.

Peaceful vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Nils' home for 2 weeks and loved every minute of our stay. The pictures on the website do not capture just how lovely the place is. We had everything we needed and it was conveniently located to many quaint towns for day excursions. If you are looking for a great place to relax, this is the place for you. Thanks Nils!

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

I rented this home for 12 days on a business trip. It was so relaxing and wonderful to come back to this great house with the beautiful view of the river and an oak forest. The house, with spiral staircase up to the bedrooms, has country charm. Nils, the owner, was very helpful and easy to work with. I hope to return next year!

Perfect getaway house

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our two boys (ages 6 and 8) have stayed here many times, in every season. This house and the surrounding property are absolutely fantastic. Just minutes away you'll find hiking (including Minnewaska, Spring Farm trailhead), apple picking, swimming, biking. Or you never have to leave! We have spent many hours at the water's edge during the day and curled up next to the fireplace(s) in the evenings after cooking dinner. Perfect getaway.

our favorite Ulster Co. hide-away

  • 5 of 5

We stay in this lovely quiet home when we need a break from the city. Surrounded by trees, it has clear view of the river from the house. Walk in and exhale. It is very close to High Falls with a couple good restaurants and swimming hole. It is also very close to the trails around Mohonk where we have done some light hiking that leads to spectacular views. It is also not far from New Paltz in one direction and Stone Ridge in the other if you want more variety in food or shopping. All the scenery is gorgeous in Ulster County. Drive, bike or hike for the scenery then get a bottle of wine and watch the water flow by. It couldn't be better. We are a couple but the house could accommodate a family easily.

The lower Hudson Valley is packed with charm. Spectacular hiking along the Shawangunk Ridge, with hundreds of miles of trails connecting Mohonk, Minnewaska State Park and Sam's Point Park. Old carriage roads are groomed for x-country skiing in the winter, open for hiking, biking and horseback riding in summer. There are two downhill ski resorts within an hour's drive. Summer swimming opportunities range from the pristine 'sky lakes' atop the Shawangunk Ridge, to the many public and private swimming holes, two private swimming holes near the house. The famous Mohonk Mountain House (10 minutes away) makes a great day trip: hiking, gardens, canoeing, x-country skiing or ice skating in season, or lounging around the many fireplaces. They also have a famous spa.

The nearby villages of High Falls, Rosendale and Stone Ridge have many restaurants and bars. Stone Ridge (10 minutes away) has full shopping center with an excellent supermarket, wine store, pet store, drug store etc. The area is dotted with local farm stands in season. There is an old-fashioned single-screen movie theater in Rosendale.
