Beautiful house, cool jungle vibe, walking distance to beach but.....

  • 3 of 5

So let me start off by saying this is one of the coolest houses I have ever seen. The porches are incredible and the accommodations very comfortable. You are in walking distance of a nearly empty beach. Not a good surfing or swimming beach but great for peaceful tranquility. The wifi worked fairly well.

So with that said, what's the problem...

When you pay this much money to stay at a place in costa rica you have certain expectations. First off, there were only 2 towels for us to use for the week we were there. There were no written instructions how to access wifi, do laundry, empty trash, etc.. The beds weren't comfortable. There is no oven (which might be common in CR but still something to note).

But the biggest issue was... There is another house (caretakers house) right next to the house you are renting. There is no privacy wall up or anything and it is only 25 feet away. If you are trying to escape and you see the patio's and think to yourself "Man I want to relax on the hammock or sit and read on the patio" this place is not for you. While the lady staying there is really nice and provided great service, she is there 24 hours a day normally sitting on her front porch with her big, barking dog. She would come over to use the washer dryer. She was respectful about it but there was no privacy. When I go on vacation I try to relax and spend some quality, intimate time with my spouse. This is hard to do at this location.

Overall, it still was a great stay but we would never stay here again (especially not for the price).

Owner's Response: Many thanks Jesse for your review. As it is written in the description, "24 hr onsite caretaker & guard", Roxana and her husband live on the property as caretakers but also for your security. Their little house is located about 165 feet from the main house. You should have asked Roxana for more towels and for laundry. She does that service for people staying a week of course.

Luxury in the jungle.

  • 5 of 5

Casa Naranja is truly luxury in the jungle. It is a beautifully built home. The quality is impressive. It was also very comfortable. We lacked for nothing. The front porch with hammocks is great. The grill out back is off another porch with more outside seating. We saw (and heard) howler monkeys, sloths, toucans, blue morpho butterflies and more. The beach is a short walk and gorgeous, but not swimmable right there. There are hammocks on the beach, provided for all by Almonds and Coral Lodge. The Lodge is across the road from the house and a nice plus. It has a zip line tour and a nice restaurant. The caretaker of Casa Naranja, Roxanna was very attentive and helpful. She made us feel very comfortable and secure. We had no issues leaving the house all day or our teenagers alone while we walked on the beach. You are in the jungle with the Resort to one side and 2 other homes nearby. There are bike rentals, but the house is a little far from amentities for young kids to be biking. Plus, you have to bike on the road. My only comment is to make sure you get instructions on how to get hot water out of the kitchen faucet.

You can cook at home easily or enjoy many of the local restaurants. Lots of beaches all around offer many different opportunities. The town of Manzanillo had limited offerings, but a great beach. Puerto Viejo had everything and is a short drive. Pan Pay is the best bakery around, not to be missed! It is on the beach, next to the Police Station. They also have a nice Farmers Market on Saturdays with lots of great fruits and wares. The towns between the house and Puerto Viejo have restaurants and some grocery stores. We visited the Jaguar Rescue Center -- well worth it. We even did the evening jungle tour.

We've been to Costa Rica several times. This was our first visit to the Caribbean. We went primarily to see the sloths and were not disappointed. It is a very different feel from the West coast beaches. Much more laid back and relaxing. You also get a real Caribbean feel with the locals and the food. Definitely worth experiencing!

Peaceful and relaxing in rainforest pt 2

  • 5 of 5

There are a few things that we need to comment about the villa that are just our thoughts. 1) Roxana is very friendly and does go out of her way to make sure you are happy, but you have no true privacy. She is always there and every day, she would have people over at her place. So, we never really did have privacy. 2) She only cleaned the property one time during our 10 day stay. We did not really have access to a broom or dustpan to even clean the place ourselves. 3) The place does need some minor work on it, but that is to be expected in the middle of a tropical rain forest.

The shower works great, but you just have to wait for the hot water which can take sometime to work its way to you, but it does come. The one thing that we did find was for some reason, the hot water in the kitchen would not give you hot water. My wife was in the bathroom and she was taking a shower and all of a sudden, I got hot water in the kitchen. Once my wife was done taking a shower, the hot water stopped coming out in the kitchen. We discovered that if you turn the hot water on in the bathroom sink and wait a minute or two, you would get hot water in the kitchen. When you have enough hot water in kitchen, you turn off the hot water in the bathroom. Rather funny. Not sure why this was occurring, but we got the hot water we needed for the dishes. Roxana did show us that after you wash the dishes that you need to rinse the dishes with the supplied water.

The WIFI in the room was no issue. We were able to keep in touch with family at home. The TV does have SKY dish, but on most nights, we had only 1 channel that was English. All of the others were spanish or foreign. Not a big deal, but do not expect to watch American channels.

The villa does not come with a hair dryer, which I made an assumption it did, but Roxana was able to find a hair dryer for my wife. The villa also did not have paper towels or dish towels are dishwashing soap. Roxana did give us some dishwashing soap, but we had to buy a dish towel and paper towels at El Duende Gourmet. Keep that in mind. The villa does have salt and pepper and other spices. It also had coffee and filters.

Peaceful, relaxing in the tropical rainforest

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Casa Naranja was as expected. We rented the villa through Caribe Sur and Olga was our contact. We arrived a little after 3:20pm and the offices close at 4:00pm. So, Olga had someone at the office follow us to the villa. The villa is located a short distance from Manzanillo. You are about 5 minutes from Playa Chiquita which is where Caribe Sur’s office is at. This is also where there are a number of great restaurants. The villa is located right next to the Almonds and Coral resort. The villa is exactly as pictured on the website. Roxana is the caretaker that lives in a small house right next to the villa. Roxana has a dog named Max that really does bark when there is someone around that he is not sure about. After the 1st day, Max knew who we were and did not bark at us any longer. The villa is located a short distance from the beach (which is Playa Grande) through a small jungle path. It actually is not that bad, but it is rocky and you will need to walk through some tree roots and stuff. But, when you get to the opening to the beach, wow. The beach was really just ours for the 10 days we were there. We saw a few people walking the beach, but you could count them on one hand. And they usually were the same people. The beach itself goes for a long distance since you can walk all the way to Manzanillo and if you go the other way, you can walk all the way to Punta Uva. So, if you like to walk the beach, like we do, this is a perfect beach for that. The tropical rainforest goes right to the edge of the beach, just like you see in the pictures. You cannot use the water at the villa for drinking, but water is provided by Caribe Sur. We ate at the following restaurants and the reviews for the restaurants can be found at TripAdvisor under their respective names:

Pizzeria Pulcinella

Eqilbbrio

Jungle Love Cafe (2 times)

Pita Bonita

Flip Flop (in Puerto Viejo)

Todo Es Posible

De Gustibus Bakery (Puerto Viejo for pastries)

El Duende Gourmet Grocery store is located in Playa Chiquita and they have a good supply of goods that you will need. They also have, in the morning, fresh homemade croissants. These were very good and we would recommend having them for breakfast or as a dessert after dinner. We had them 2 times during our stay. We actually did buy a lot of our goods at the Walmart in San Jose by the airport and the cost difference is pretty substantial.

Map

The house sits between Punta Uva and Manzanillo.

Punta Uva, this is where the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge starts. The coast is composed of two bays, separated by Punta Uva point. You will find to the south the district of Arrecife, and to the north a large bay surrounded by jungle vegetation. This is one of the best spots within the region for snorkeling. Don't miss the river kayaking.

Manzanillo is in the heart of the wildlife refuge and on the edge of a long sandy beach, Playa Grande. It’s the end of the road, but the beginning of an unforgettable experience. There are several restaurants, a bar and a souvenir shops that face the long beach, lined with coconut trees.
