Wow. What a beautiful cottage and location . Ideal to relax and unwind. We have never had a better cottage.
Stay at Turn-a-Penny
We booked Turn-a-Penny in the hope of finding some tranquility and some seclusion which it was implied on the overall description of the property. The cottage is indeed lovely with a very well- equipped kitchen, a lovely master bedroom and a very comfortable bed. The only issue for us was the fact that there is a byway right next to the cottage. In the days of our stay (mid-August) there was a constant flow of people going pass the cottage every five minutes. The front garden that faces the river is also the barbecue area and with the constant flow of people going by, we felt hard to find much privacy. And because the cottage is very lovely indeed, many people would spend time just outside the property staring at it and taking pictures. So from that point of view, it was not the ideal tranquility or seclusion we were hoping for. Overall, the estate is lovely and perhaps we should have chosen another cottage.
Very nice cottage in rural location
Only a few miles away from Truro but hidden in a very rural environment, this cottage is a great escape! Very well equipped, everything you need is provided. Many lovely details to make you feel really welcomed. Good location to explore central and west Cornwall, but you can also stay at the cottage and use the walking paths passing the cottage.
Lovely scenic holiday cottage
Lovely location, Ideal for kayaking and dog walks, just what we hoped for only next time we would book 2weeks. The cottage was very clean and tidy and our stay was very comfortable. The cottage is very well equipped and has little extra touches to make your stay enjoyable ie binoculars for watching the river and wildlife , slippers, toiletries, welcome goodies including local tea, coffe, milk, biscuits etc and fresh flowers.
Very nice cottage on a very nice place and a wonderful stay, all friendly, hope not the last stay in great britain
Lovely House But Winter Access May Be A Problem
The house itself is immaculate with good facilities. Peace and quiet was very welcome.
However there were a few niggles:
Access Road - for a high end, and high cost, house the access road is terrible, Rutted, slippery and very narrow. Also the farmyard at the top doesn't set a good example as to the standard of the rental properties it leads to.
The stone slabs on the ground floor were filthy. We dropped some water and when using the mop to clean it, the water coming off it was filthy. Dust free yes, but clearly hadn't been washed with a mop for a while. So felt it a bit of a cheek to charge £50 PER DOG to cover a cleaning charge.
Landline phone is very useful as only mobile signal is at the top of the hill, but the phone in the bedroom is like having a night light on. Ended up unplugging it. It's a small house, you really don't need two phones!
Living room has way too much in it, 2 large arm chairs, a sofa, large coffee table AND a foot stool. No room to move and no where to put dog beds.
Will look elsewhere in the future unfortunately.
Thank you for your review - we truly value all the feedback from our guests and apologise that we did not meet your expectations this visit. We take pride in our cleanliness and attention to detail and will review cleaning procedures to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Access lane maintenance is carried out throughout the seasons however, this is reliant on the weather and we apologise that these works had not been carried out prior to your stay following an earlier period of bad weather. Works are in progress and we hope to welcome you back in the future to one of our other Tregothnan Wild Escape cottages to enjoy our unique area of Cornwall here in Coombe.
The city of Truro is only about a 10 minute drive away and has a wide selection of good shopping including a Tescos, Sainsburys, Marks & Spencer and many other high street outlets. There is also a cinema and a great selection of restaurants, pubs & cafes. The resort of Newquay is about 16 miles to the north with its spectacular surf beaches at Fistral & Watergate Bay. Jamie Oliver's "Fifteen" restaurant is located here. Padstow, with its fine selection of restaurants influenced by Rick Stein is just over 20 miles. The yachting centres of Mylor, Falmouth & St Mawes are all within easy reach of the cottage. There is a watersports centre at nearby Loe Beach where you can learn to sail or windsurf. The nearby Roseland Area of Outstanding Beauty with its superb coastal walks is also a short drive away via the King Harry Ferry.
The Cathedral City of Truro is in the heart of Cornwall and offers a wealth of facilities for the visitor. Dominated by the stunning cathedral, it is one of the south west's most attractive cities. Lemon Quay plays host to many events throughout the year including the Cornwall Food & Drink Festival in the Autumn and the famous Truro Fatstock Show just before Christmas. Regular farmers markets occur every Wednesdays & Saturday and there are also arts & craft markets on Saturdays.
There is a wonderful range of shopping for the visitor including all the regular high street stores including Marks & Spencer, Tescos & Sainsburys, but also a wide range of more specialist stores. It really is worth a wander through the back streets and alleys to find some fabulous little boutiques.
Truro has a superb range of restaurants from Bustopher Jones & Mannings on Lemon Street to the always popular Pizza Express. There are lively bars, pubs & nightclubs including the superb Old Ale House, a busy Wetherspoons and the infamous L2 if you are so inclined! The Hall for Cornwall hosts everything from Shakespeare to rock concerts and the cinema on Lemon Street has all the latest releases.
