Ephraim cabin description

The Spare Log Cabin is a totally renovated 1930s cabin. We have done our best to preserve the homespun charm and appeal of this delightful cabin by restoring all of the woodwork and furnishing it with many of our family's vintage decorations and art. You will be reminded of a time when families fled the hot city to their northern retreats, not only for the fresh air, rest and relaxation, but to spend quality family time- a true escape!

That said, all upholstered furniture, carpets, beds/bedding, bathrooms and fixtures, kitchen, appliances and wood stove new in 2010!

The Spare Log Cabin was featured in Cabin Life Magazine's October, 2011 issue.

Experience a true Door County vacation and make memories that will last a lifetime!

About Door County Property Management

We now live in St. Louis, Missouri, but Phil is originally from Moberly, Missouri and Alison is from Oyster Bay, New York. Phil practices law in Illinois, Missouri and Wisconsin. Our family's hobbies include boating, hiking and bicycling. Alison likes to cook, sew and do just about any craft project. Both girls run cross country in high school. Lizzy plays clarinet in the marching band and Perry plays the mandolin. Our family loves Door County more than any place in the world, and spends as much time here as our schedules will allow!

Door County Property Management purchased this cabin in 2009

Why Door County Property Management chose Ephraim

Ephraim is a wonderful location in Door County because, not only is it beautiful, it is centrally located to everything we like to do! We like our privacy and our cabin is tucked deep in the woods and very quiet. However, everything you need is within a mile or two. We have kept the cabin's rustic charm, but added most modern conveniences.

What makes this cabin unique

The Spare Log Cabin is one of the few remaining mail-order 'kit' cabins in the county. It has been on this property since the 1930s and is the oldest structure on the road. If you look closely, you can see chalk numbers on some of the ceiling timbers.

The good and the not so good!

  • 2 of 5

We (four friends) rented "The Spare" for a birthday weekend in Door County. Unfortunately, the review is mixed. The cabin is in a lovely wooded site, which felt like we were really off the beat track even though we were relatively close to the highway. Location and wooded site were great. Upon first entering the home, we noticed a very strong musty smell which we got used to while in the home but hit us again every time we left and re-entered. Scented candles were purchased to mask the odor and helped at little. Unfortunately every item brought back home after the getaway had taken on the odor and had to be either laundered or aired out to get rid of the smell. The cabin itself was quaint and well decorated. Beds seemed comfortable. When we first arrived, on top of one of the beds was what appeared to be mouse droppings which we disposed of. While we did not see any mice while we were there, the outside of the cabin was surrounded by mouse traps, giving us a little uneasy feeling. The house was equipped with most items we needed but found that a few key items were not there. No scissors, no axe or saw for fire wood (there was a pile of firewood on hand but most of the logs were too large to fit in the wood stove), trash bags were limited to one for garbage and one for recycling, one box of Kleenex for the entire house.

There was not free internet service. I believe it was available for a fee. For Packer Sunday, the local TV channels were all blocked out on the Dish Network and so we were not able to watch the game. With all of this said, we did have a really fun weekend. Had some great meals prepared in the really cute cabin kitchen. Sadly, I don't think we will be making a return visit to "The Spare". Lots of other Door County rentals to choose from. Next time we'll try another option.

Cute & Cozy are apt descriptors

  • 3 of 5

We loved the location and the quiet of the cottage. I saw deer everyday outside the house or walking on the road. The trees are beautiful. The amenities were fine with a few exceptions. The wifi is terrible (so slow it us useless and we did reset it) and there was only intermittent cellular (ATT) service. If you must have a connection you'll need to walk up to the road. The cottage has a very heavy musty smell which you get used to but hits you every time you walk in after leaving. I had to wash the glasses before using them because they smelled so heavily of mold. We also had mice. I know this sound negative but overall the cottage is comfortable and had everything we needed. Bring your own bath towels and there is no washer or dryer. All said we'd stay there again because of the location, comfy beds and space. A bit expensive considering the musty smell, mice, no wifi or washer.

Excellent stay

  • 5 of 5

We were very pleased with our place. It was very clean, had plenty of room for the 6 of us (plus our dog), and had everything as promised. Location was great, private, and easy to find.

The Spare

  • 4 of 5

The Spare was a cute, cozy , clean place to stay. Our dog loved it too!

We did not really plan on watching TV but were surprised that only one channel comes in. It was a quiet weekend for us! The kitchen had everything we needed and the beds were very comfortable.

Some suggestions: Would recommend replacing the table fans as only one of three worked. Also there was not a handle on the front door. Finally, wifi was too weak to open a website.

We would stay there again!

Love it!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, cozy, log cabin surrounded by trees. Very serene, with a fully equipped kitchen. Great for a family or a few friends that want to get away from The city. There is plenty to do, hiking at the close by state parks, shops, restaurants, mini golf, regular golf, the grocery store. If your an ocean lover Lake Michigan resembles the ocean yet without the salt. Make sure to go to Sister Bay State Beach off of Mill Street. Simply Gorgeous. I would come again and again.

Will Be Back!

  • 5 of 5

What a charming cabin! The setting in the woods is so peaceful yet it is very convenient to all of the activities that Ephraim has to offer. The decor is darling with comfortable furnishings and the assortment of books and games were a nice touch. We really enjoyed our stay and look forward to visiting again!
