About Derek Schnure

As parents of three young children, we understand what families want in a vacation house. We keep the property in excellent condition, and strive to make the house kid-friendly. We provide baby gates, step stools in the bathrooms, and a fully fenced-in back yard to keep your little ones safe. For your convenience, we also provide beach toys (pails, shovels, etc.) so you don't have to bring these bulky items on your trip. We also provide kid-safe plastic cups and 'fish plates' for them to use. Kids always have a fun time, whether at the beach, playing in the backyard, going on a day trip on the ferry to Block Island, skipping rocks at the pond next to the Point Judith Lighthouse, or while doing a multitude of other activities.

But we know the trip is also meant to be a vacation for you. At the end of the day, you can kick back and have a cocktail in the comfortable and spacious living area and watch a movie on the 46' HD plasma television in air conditioned comfort, or relax in the backyard, with all of the conveniences of home at hand.

We spend about a month in the house ourselves every summer so you can rest assured that we keep EVERYTHING in top condition.

We hope you spend your holiday in our home and enjoy it as much as we do.

All the best,

Derek and Victoria Schnure

Derek Schnure purchased this house in 2002

Why Derek Schnure chose Narragansett

We love the fact that we are only 3 hours from our winter home in New Jersey and have so many options of things to do. We can walk to the beach, take day trips to Block Island from the ferry (only 3 miles from our house), go to Newport, Watch Hill, visit the Norman Bird Sanctuary near Newport, head up to the Roger Williams Zoo near Providence, and many other fun things. The kids look forward to going to the Point Judith Lighthouse to skip stones in the pond or watch the surfers. Our visits to Narragansett are definitely the high points of the year, and are looked forward to all winter.

What makes this house unique

A nice thing about staying in our home is that we are very close to some beautiful beaches and there are many options of things to do, but at the end of the day you can come back to the property and relax in peace and comfort. There's plenty of space for playing and relaxing in the house or elsewhere on the property. We generally set up our kids' toys in the laundry room/mudroom, which is adjacent to the living room. The kids like having their own place to play!

Beachy Scarborough Summer Home w/ A/C -- family friendly amenities

This house has everything you need -- and everything you want.

  • 5 of 5

My family of six, which includes my husband and I, my two teenage daughters, my 10-year-old son, and my 81-year-old mother, just stayed at the house for a week. The house had absolutely everything we needed -- and even more, some features made it even better than I expected. And, as a lifelong visitor to Cape Cod, I was pleasantly surprised by how much Rhode Island had to offer!

First of all, I was able to give my mother the downstairs bedroom so that she didn't have to climb stairs, had some privacy, and had her own bathroom. That eliminated any concern I had over her comfort. The rest of us were happy upstairs. I loved the fact that every room had its own air conditioning unit. (They weren't window units, they were these units mounted high on the wall that had remote controls.)

The washer and drier, dishwasher, and garbage disposal were key for convenience, and all the cable stations on the TV were an added bonus. The beds were very comfortable, and the neighborhood was quiet. Also, having beach chairs and sand toys meant there was a lot we didn't have to pack in our car, which we really appreciated.

Scarborough Beach was great. Plenty of parking for a decent price. Once you pay, you can come and go. Good beach food, lots of space, and great waves for boogie boarding. We went into Newport one day and toured the Breakers and the Elms. We did an additional "Servant Life" tour (Downton Abbey fan), which was fascinating. We also took the ferry over to Block Island and did a tour of the island. We went into Narragansett a few times and ate at Trio, which as delicious, and we also got a lot of takeout -- specifically from this fantastic place called Crazy Burger. We also miniature golfed. Everyplace we went was a 5 to 25 minute drive, so the location was perfect.

We will be back! The house was great, and whenever I emailed Derek with questions he got back to me really quickly.

Best Sleep all year

  • 5 of 5

My family is from Rhode Island and I have been coming here to the beach for almost 50 years. We are never bored, as South County has numerous beaches and some of the best food (Doughboys & Clam Cakes at Iggys, Coffee Cabinets at Newport Creamery, Matunuck Oyster Bar, Brickleys ice cream, Jim's Dock, Champlain's smoked blue fish...). We always discover something new and this year it was Biomes in Wickford. Awesome hands on aquarium that cares for fish stranded in the area and allows you to touch some of them. I saw things here I've never seen diving! You and your children will be talking about this for months!

I have rented this home for many years, after trying out several in the South County area. To us, this feels like our summer home. It is always clean and ready for our arrival and we delight in every new upgrade or change that is always just perfect. You are guaranteed the best night's sleep of the year here, after a day at the beach, because the neighborhood is quiet, the house is air conditioned, and the beds are perfect no matter what your preference. We have had bad backs, insomniacs, stressed out executives and more all leave here feeling refreshed. The kitchen is stocked with everything you could need. The fenced in back yard is the perfect place for kids to play while you prepare dinner. And the outdoor shower - well no one ever uses the ones inside.

Wonderful home!

  • 5 of 5

My family spends a week in Narragansett every summer. This home was, by far, the nicest! It was clean and very well-equipped. Plenty of dishes, utensils, pots, pans etc. Having clean linens and bath towels included made packing for our week much easier. My 1 1/2 year old grandson loved the beach toys and large fenced yard. My son-in-law loved the hammock and outdoor shower. They were able to shower the baby there after a sandy day at the beach. We love this area for its beautiful beaches (especially Roger Wheeler State Beach), restaurants (Spain, Mews, Georges, etc.) and neighborhoods for walking and bike-riding! We definitely want to rent this home again!

Great family vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our family has stayed in this charming rental house a few times. We keep coming back because the owners take care to maintain it well and are great to work with. It has everything you need for a week away with the kids or extended family and friends. With little ones, it is nice that there is a neighborhood playground within walking distance and a big fenced in backyard that they can run around in safely. The area is family-friendly and it is a quick drive to restaurants, shops and beach (or a relaxing walk to the beach if you're not carrying too much stuff). Having free WiFi access is key for us so that's a big plus, and after staying in sweltering rentals with no A/C, we appreciate that as well (will never stay in a rental without it again!) The washer/dryer on the main floor in the mudroom area makes it really easy to toss in all that soggy beach gear at the end of the day before trudging through the house. Love the easy, simple life vibe in Narragansett... looking forward to staying here again this summer.

Perfect in Every Way!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week in this adorable little house. The property is in great condition, and the fenced yard is huge and great for running the kids around. We had a great time cooking out on the patio and enjoying the weather. The bedrooms were spacious and the neighborhood is very quiet. It is a bit of a walk to the beach but the wagon is great for hauling the kids and toys, and it's not a difficult walk at all. Loved every minute of our stay and would not hesitate to return to this house.

Owner's Response: Thanks Rebecca! We appreciate the review! Regarding the walk to the beach--- yes, it is 3/4 mile to the closest entrance on the beach. Now that we have three kids, we often drive and park at the main Scarborough lot since we bring so much "stuff" to the beach. That is always an option, but of course you have to pay to park at the state beaches. Best, Derek

Ideal house for our family!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this property for our vacation rental. Plenty of bedrooms and living space for my wife and I, 3 kids, and the grandaparents and aunt as well! The house is in pristine condition, and the "mudroom" entryway (with laundry) and garage were the ideal spots to store our beach items, shoes, etc. so they didn't clutter up the house. We also really appreciated the AC throughout the house (it was very hot the week we were in RI), as well as the outdoor shower and spacious backyard. Though initially the walk to the beach seemed further than we pictured, we had no issue with our 8, 5, and 1 yr. olds walking/riding down to the beach every day. We highly recommend this house!

Owner's Response: We appreciate the wonderful comments about our home. We do try to keep the house in excellent condition, as we too still rent properties when travelling , and we know the sense of trepidation one feels when trying out new accommodations. Yes, the 3/4 mile to the beach can sometimes be challenging while lugging beach stuff, but we do provide a wagon. Driving and parking is always an option, but of course it isn't free. Best, Derek & Victoria Schnure
